Book Synopsis Harmony & Dissonance by : Sidney M. Bolkosky
Download or read book Harmony & Dissonance written by Sidney M. Bolkosky and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing one of the most vital and significant Jewish populations in the United States, Harmony and Dissonance chronicles the intellectual, cultural, and social history of the Jews of Detroit from 1914 to 1967. Sidney Bolkosky has drawn upon resources from religious and secular Jewish institutions in Detroit and supplemented them with information and interpretations from numerous oral testimonies to place this material in the context of the city of Detroit and its unique economic and social history. Thus the book includes discussions of the effects of Detroit events on the Jewish population, from Henry Ford's promise of a five dollar per day wage to the Detroit riots of 1943 and 1967. The author contends that the peculiar history of Detroit plays a determining role in the history of its Jews. Organized chronologically, Harmony and Dissonance examines the historically shifting dynamics among Jewish groups and individuals, addressing such controversial topics as assimilation, intermarriage, religious conflicts, anti-Semitism, and East European versus German Jewish identities. In pursuing the central thesis of the problematic search for Jewish identity, which runs throughout the book and ties the work together, the author has also explored the multifaceted nature of the Jewish population of Detroit, its landsmanshaften, German Jews, "establishment" organizations and their antagonists, cultural forces, and numerous Yiddish groups. This focus on identity is sharpened as the author perceives two events increasingly directing Jewish life and thought--the Holocaust and its aftermath and the founding of the state of Israel. How those events influenced the attitudes and behavior of Detroit's Jews contributes to what one Detroit patriarch called "the Detroit difference."

Book Synopsis A History of Apprenticeship Nurse Training in Ireland by : Gerard Fealy
Download or read book A History of Apprenticeship Nurse Training in Ireland written by Gerard Fealy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on new research using previously unpublished sources, this compelling text is an in-depth study of the history of nurse education in Ireland, presenting a new authoritative account of the history of the traditional system of training in Ireland. Introduced as part of the reforms of hospital nursing in the late nineteenth century, apprenticeship nurse training was a vocational extension of secondary education. Residing outside the mainstream of higher educational provision it provided nurses with the knowledge and technical skills for sick nursing, whilst also functioning to socialise them into the role of hospital worker and introduce to them nursing’s value systems. This method of training provided a ready supply of skilled, efficient, inexpensive and loyal workers. In a chronological period spanning over a century, the book traces the development of modern nursing in Ireland, bringing the hidden role of nurses and nursing to the fore. It analyzes and describes the development, provision and gradual reform of hospital nursing, taking into account the social, cultural, political and economic factors that led to its establishment, its continuance, and eventual demise.

Download or read book Trapped in Folklore? written by Drago Kunej and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions like "Trapped in folklore?" open up many possibilities for reflection and prompt different answers. This thematic book discusses questions as to whether the selected musical phenomena are a fossilized form of tradition, folklore, and folklorism and, as such, are trapped in a museum-like image isolated from contemporary cultural life. Or, whether we are looking at active events, changes, and adjustments within contemporary society. The book presents the openness and diversity of views on folklore and creates a connection between (past and present) folklore phenomena, between researchers, and between their fields of expertise.
