Download or read book The European Convention on Human Rights written by William A. Schabas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 1433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Convention on Human Rights: A Commentary is the first complete article-by-article commentary on the ECHR and its Protocols in English. This book provides an entry point for every part of the Convention: the substance of the rights, the workings of the Court, and the enforcement of its judgments. A separate chapter is devoted to each distinct provision or article of the Convention as well as to Protocols 1, 4, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 16, which have not been incorporated in the Convention itself and remain applicable to present law. Each chapter contains: a short introduction placing the provision within the context of international human rights law more generally; a review of the drafting history or preparatory work of the provision; a discussion of the interpretation of the text and the legal issues, with references to the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and the European Commission on Human Rights; and a selective bibliography on the provision. Through a thorough review of the ECHR this commentary is both exhaustive and concise. It is an accessible resource that is ideal for lawyers, students, journalists, and others with an interest in the world's most successful human rights regime.

Book Synopsis The Strength of Our Commitments by : Corina Lacatus
Download or read book The Strength of Our Commitments written by Corina Lacatus and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The number of international agreements defining and committing signatories to enforcing human rights in their domestic law has grown over the postwar era. Accompanying these agreements has been the development of domestic agencies to enforce these obligations. Cora Lacatus has surveyed human rights agencies around the world to determine how effective they are in enforcing human rights and what explains the success of some of these agencies and the failures of others. Lacatus contends that international support for these agencies is critical to their success. She points to the efforts of the European Union to set standards for agency performance and to provide political support for the agencies in its member countries as an example of the influence of international organizations. Lacatus also contends that how these agencies cultivate domestic political support is important. Are the agencies important to a government in sending a signal to key groups in the country of its support for human rights? Does the vitality of the agency send an important signal to key international actors of the governments support for certain values? The audience for this book will primarily be among scholars in international relations. It is the last book for the series Chicago Series on International and Domestic Institutions"--

Download or read book Human Rights in Turkey written by Zehra F. Kabasakal Arat and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey's mixed human rights record has been highly politicized in the debate surrounding the country's probable ascendance to membership in the European Union. Beginning with the foundation of a secular republic in 1923, and continuing with founding membership in the United Nations and participation in the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, Turkey made significant commitments to the advancement of human rights. However, its authoritarian tradition, periods of military rule, increasing social inequality, and economic crises have led to policies that undermine human rights. While legislative reforms and civil social activism since the 1980s have contributed greatly to the advancement of human rights, recent progress is threatened by the rise of nationalism, persistent gender inequality, and economic hardship. In Human Rights in Turkey, twenty-one Turkish and international scholars from various disciplines examine human rights policies and conditions since the 1920s, at the intersection of domestic and international politics, as they relate to all spheres of life in Turkey. A wide range of rights, such as freedom of the press and religion, minority, women's, and workers' rights, and the right to education, are examined in the context of the history and current conditions of the Republic of Turkey. In light of the events of September 11, 2001, and subsequent developments in the Middle East, recent proposals about modeling other Muslim countries after Turkey add urgency to an in-depth study of Turkish politics and the causal links with human rights. The scholarship presented in Human Rights in Turkey holds significant implications for the study of human rights in the Middle East and around the globe.

This book was released on 1977-10-01 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "European Yearbook" promotes the scientific study of nineteen European supranational organisations and the OECD. The series offers a detailed survey of the history, structure and yearly activities of each organisation and an up-to-date overview of the member states of each organisation. This special anniversary volume celebrates 60 years of publication of the Yearbook, and its contents differs from that of the regular volumes therefore. It offers a selection of the most important articles, dealing with European cooperation and integration, to appear in the Yearbook during its 60 years of publication. These are of particular interest not only because they provide a unique historical snapshot of the many successes (and occasional failures) in the field of European integration but also because they discuss the ideals and aims that lay behind these efforts, many of which still resonate today as Europe confronts questions about its political destiny and ideal shape. This volume contains articles in English and French."

This book was released on 1990-03-26 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Yearbook has expanded over the years in keeping with the role played by European institutions compared with national ones. It is an indispensable work of reference for anyone dealing with these institutions, which have become so numerous & varied that no-one can possibly memorise all their acronyms or functions. The European Yearbook provides aids for finding one's way through the labyrinth of these organisations which coordinate a variety of activities in over 20 countries. One of the aids is an 'organisation chart' at the beginning of the documentary section, giving a clear picture of the general situation. A perusal of the many contributions in the volume organisation by organisation, shows the full diversity of the activities which Europe is gradually taking over from national governments, with their consent & financial support. Written in both of the Council of Europe's official languages, English & French, the European Yearbook also contains a general index by subject & name which constitutes a very valuable list of articles & provides direct access to the work's subject matter, regardless of the particular organisation concerned, offering a kind of cross-section of the activities of European organisations.
