Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifth Annual Report of the Reclamation Service, 1906 That the Secretary of the Interior is hereby authorized and directed to make exami nations and surveys for, and to locate and construct, as herein provided, irrigation works for the storage, diversion, and development of waters, including artesian wells, and to report to Congress at the beginning of each regular session as to the results of such examinations and surve giving estimates of cost of all contemplated works, the quantity and location of t re lands which can be irrigated therefrom, and all facts relative to t e practicability of each irri tion project; also the cost of works in process of construction, as well as of those whic have been completed. In compliance with the requirements of the statute, I have the honor to mclose herewith copy of a letter from the Director of the Geological Survey, dated the 28th ultimo, transmitting the report contemplated by the above-mentioned section of the act of J 11119 17 1902. The seventh and eighth units were opened to settlement during the fiscal year. The drainage work was continued throughout the year and such work has been uniformly successful. Thesettlers on the project are in 'a prosperous condition. Consideration is being given to plans for the development Of a unit on the south side Of the Shoshone River. Three extremely dry years - 1917, 1918, and 1919 - throughout a large portion of the West have broken all records for drou ht, and many private irrigation projects have suffered for lack of water. The outlook for 1920 appears to be little better. As a result, dry {arrpmg has been a failure and there is much demand for irrigated an s.
