Miss Fuller was born on an Illinois farm; thence she progressed to Chicago, New York, London, Paris, Vienna, and Russia. She made her debut as an actress by speaking a "piece" at the Chicago Progressive Lyceum when she was two and a half years old. Years later when she was rehearsing in a play called "Quack, M.D.," she made use in a hypnotism scene of a wide skirt of soft transparent silk that had been sent her from India. Under the lights the gauzy material seemed first a butterfly, then an orchid under her manipulations; thus the idea of serpentine dancing came to her and a new art was born. She was engaged soon afterwards to dance in New York in "Uncle Celestins" and awoke one morning like Byron to find herself famous. In delicious, crisp style, punctuated with staccatos of remembered ecstasies, Miss Fuller relates her experiences and recounts the incidents of her friendships. These friendships seem over-valued, but they include such names as Flammarion, Rodin, Dumas, Sarah Bernhardt, Anatole France (who has written the introduction for her book), and M. Claretie. France describes the dancer as "an American lady with small features, with blue eyes like water in which a pale sky is reflected, rather plump, smiling, refined." He should have added Gallic, for her art-admitting its Greek form-her phrases, her vivacity, her happy egotism are as Gallic as France's description of her. The first, the narrative of Optimism, is a story of the triumphant opening of brave new worlds of commercial integration and cultural inclusion. The second, the narrative of Fear, is a story of the endangerment, mourning, and loss of a traditional culture. While the story of Optimism deploys a rhetoric of commercial mobilization and “innovation,” the story of Fear emphasizes the rhetoric of preserving something “pure” and “traditional” that is “dying.” Both narratives have compelling rhetorical force, and actually need each other, in order to move their opposing audiences into action. However, as Picart shows, the realities behind these rhetorically framed political parables are more complex than a simple binary. Hence, the book steers a careful path between hope rather than unbounded Optimism, and caution, rather than Fear, in exploring how law functions in and as culture as it contours the landscape of intellectual property rights, as experienced by indigenous peoples and minorities. However, many assume that modernist abstraction resulted from a century of natural, autonomous evolution to painting styles and tastes. In Moving Modernism, author Nell Andrew challenges this assumption. By examining dance and film created during this period, she argues that performative modes of art created the link between bodily movement and movement depicted in modernist paintings. In a seeming paradox, dance and film - durational arts, involving real bodies in space-participated in the development of abstract art. With archival material collected in North America and Europe, Moving Modernism resurfaces lost performances, identifies working methods, and establishes the circles of aesthetic influence and reception for avant-garde dance pioneers and experimental film makers from the turn of the century to the interwar period. Reexamining the motivation that fueled the emergence of abstraction, Andrew claims that painters sought meaning not only in the material and formal picture but also in temporal and sensorial experience. Andrew looks at major figures and intellectual movements including Lo�e Fuller and Symbolism; Valentine de Saint-Point and the Cubo-Futurist and neo-Symbolist movements; and early cinematic abstraction from Edison and the Lumi�res to Hans Richter and Marcel Duchamp. Close examinations of each figure show that theatrical display, embodied self-projection, and kinesthetic desire are not necessarily in opposition to pictorial abstraction; in fact, they expand our understanding of the urges that created modern art.
