Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed analyses of failures of material components have proved to be valuable in many ways; by preventing further failures, by assessing the validity of designs and the selection of materials, by uncovering shortcomings in the processing of the materials in volved through characterizations of defects, and by revealing problems introduced during the manufacture or fabrication of the component. Increased recognition of the value of performing failure analyses has caused the field to develop into a very active area of tech nical endeavor. Failure analysis has been employed in numerous different technical dis ciplines and has proven beneficial. The increased activity has caused many new and im proved methods for performing these analyses to be developed. Among these are many methods which can be characterized as generally belonging to the field of metallography. In recognition of the important role that metallography plays in the performance of failure analyses, the absence of a text that specifically discusses this subject, and the be lief that communication of information on the subject would be of technical interest, The American Society for Metals and The International Metallographic Society co sponsored a symposium. The intent was to bring together world-recognized authorities working in various aspects of the failure analysis and metallographic fields to share meth ods they use, results they have obtained, and the purposes to which they utilized these results. The symposium, entitled "Metallography in Failure Analysis", was held in Hous ton, Texas, USA, July 17-18, 1977.

Book excerpt: Failure analysis and prevention activities seek to increase the technological benefits from process demonstration and pilot plants for coal conversion. Metallographic methods combined with chemical analysis, reviews of operating histories, and other tools have played a major role in resolving the causes of failures and gathering surveillance data to prevent failures. Two analyses performed for coal liquefaction plants illustrate the breadth of problems encountered in one area of complex pilot plant operations. Examinations of portions of the piping systems, the main reaction vessel, and associated fittings revealed stress-corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steels, albeit under unknown stresses and chemical environments. A solid plug formed from process stream material was caused by coking; its microstructure provided clues to its origin. A range of metallographic methods, including field metallography, was required to complete the investigations of materials from the reaction vessel area of the plants. A buckled and cracked, punched type 310 stainless steel plate that was used as an air distributor for an atmospheric fluidized-bed combustor required electron optics and diffraction methods. Low-ductility intergranular failures suggested that a massive grain boundary precipitate was sigma phase that had formed during service above 650/sup 0/C. Neither conventional color etching phase identification techniques nor anodic extraction methods to prepare samples for diffraction analyses were successful. Examination of thinned samples by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction were required to identify the precipitate as sigma phase. The general scope and methodology of failure analysis work are also discussed.

Scott provides a detailed introduction to the structure and morphology of ancient and historic metallic materials. Much of the scientific research on this important topic has been inaccessible, scattered throughout the international literature, or unpublished; this volume, although not exhaustive in its coverage, fills an important need by assembling much of this information in a single source. Jointly published by the GCI and the J. Paul Getty Museum, the book deals with many practical matters relating to the mounting, preparation, etching, polishing, and microscopy of metallic samples and includes an account of the way in which phase diagrams can be used to assist in structural interpretation. The text is supplemented by an extensive number of microstructural studies carried out in the laboratory on ancient and historic metals. The student beginning the study of metallic materials and the conservation scientist who wishes to carry out structural studies of metallic objects of art will find this publication quite useful.
