Book excerpt: Due to frequent accidental damage to prestressed concrete (P/C) bridges caused by impact from overheight vehicles, a project was initiated to evaluate the strength and load distribution characteristics of damaged P/C bridges. A comprehensive literature review was conducted. It was concluded that only a few references pertain to the assessment and repair of damaged P/C beams. No reference was found that involves testing of a damaged bridge(s) as well as the damaged beams following their removal. Structural testing of 2 damaged bridges was conducted in the field.
Book Synopsis Analytical Investigation of Damaged Prestressed Concrete Bridges by : Robert Eugene Mateega
Download or read book Analytical Investigation of Damaged Prestressed Concrete Bridges written by Robert Eugene Mateega and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damage condition variables included: depth of damage, length of damage, location of damage, and number of damaged girders. The results showed that the finite element model of the full scale laboratory bridge reasonably predicted the behavior of the actual full scale bridge. The damage tests showed that damage to exterior beams is more critical than damage to interior beams. Also, for the damage conditions investigated, the tests revealed that damage in which no prestressing strands were severed did not greatly alter the behavior of the bridge.

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of a Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridge Model written by Ryan Robert Paradis and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loads were applied to the structure in the undamaged condition to obtain baseline behavior and at various levels of damage. Damage was inflicted to the exterior girder of the bridge to simulate field damage. Damage consisted of both removal of concrete and the severing of the prestressing strands. Concrete and steel were removed in small increments so that critical levels of damage could be determined. A total of thirteen levels of damage were inflicted on the exterior girder, each subjected to various load tests. The results of the tests are compared throughout the range of damage levels to determine bridge behavior in the damaged condition.

Book excerpt: The durability of infrastructure components, such as prestressed concrete bridge beams, can be significantly affected by long-term deterioration associated with corrosion. Corrosion is a major concern for bridges in Virginia, due to the frequent use of deicing salts during the winter, as well as the number of structures in marine environments. The residual capacity of corrosion damaged prestressed I-beams and box beams needs to be accurately estimated to determine if damaged bridges need to be posted, and to help with making informed decisions related to repair, rehabilitation and replacement of damaged bridges. This report presents the results of testing of six corrosion-damaged prestressed beams removed from existing bridges during their demolition. Three beams were Type II AASHTO I-beams extracted from the Lesner Bridge in Virginia Beach, and three were 48 in wide by 27 in deep box beams extracted from the Aden Road Bridge near Quantico, Virginia. Prior to testing, the beams were visually inspected and two types of non-destructive evaluations were performed to identify corrosion activity: resistivity measurements and half-cell potential measurements. The beams were then tested in the lab to determine their flexural strength. Following testing, samples of strand were removed and tested to determine their tensile properties. Cores were taken from the Aden Road beams and from both the beams and decks of the Lesner Bridge beams to determine compressive strength. Powdered concrete samples were removed to perform chloride concentration tests. The tested strengths of the beams were compared to calculated strengths using two methods for damage estimation and two different calculation approaches. The methods for damage estimation relied exclusively on visual inspections; one was the set of methods recommended by Naito et al. (2010), while the second was a modified method developed in this study from the current tests. The two calculation approaches were a strain compatibility method and the AASHTO LRFD method. Overall, the results yielded reasonable estimates of residual strength, except for one of the box beams that was discovered to have considerable water within the hollow cells. The final recommendations are that bridge inspectors develop detailed damage maps of corrosion-damaged beams, and that load raters use the Naito et al. method to get a conservative estimate of damage for both box beams and I-beams. Either method for calculating strength is valid, however the AASHTO LRFD method is simpler.

Book Synopsis Field Test and Analysis of Two Prestressed Concrete Bridges After Deck Replacement with Frp Panels by : Madhan Kumar Kantha Samy
Download or read book Field Test and Analysis of Two Prestressed Concrete Bridges After Deck Replacement with Frp Panels written by Madhan Kumar Kantha Samy and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges B-0071 and B-0171 in Hamilton County, Ohio have been in service for about fifty years. They are short span bridges with prestressed concrete girders. Until late 2001, they had conventional reinforced concrete decks, which have been replaced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) decks. Two girders in bridge B-0171 were replaced with new prestressed girders. These bridges are significant as there are few instances of FRP decks on concrete girders. The Hamilton County Engineers Office contracted with the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Cincinnati to perform load testing on the bridges. Information gained from this research will seek to confirm the safety of the new technology, evaluate construction and design techniques with reference to the FRP deck, and determine overall performance of the bridge to provide understanding of the system. The two short span prestressed concrete bridges with fiber reinforced polymer decks were subjected to four sets of nondestructive truckload testing. Strain gauges were placed along the height of the girder cross-section, and longitudinally and transversely across the bottom of the deck. Displacement transducers were placed to measure overall girder displacement, relative deck displacement, deck panel separation, and deck-girder connection separation. A three-dimensional finite element analysis model was created to replicate the performance of each bridge. The two new prestressed girders in bridge B-0171 strengthened the bridge considerably and increased its load carrying capacity. But the old prestressed girders in bridge B-0071 and bridge B-0171 did not show any sign of deterioration. The four sets of test data collected over a two-year period show that the age effect on structural behavior is very small for both the bridges. The deck had very little influence on the distribution of loads in the structure for these bridges. Due to low deck stiffness and incomplete connectivity, the FRP deck did little to strengthen the girders. The long term monitoring of the deck result complied with the short term testing as reported by Eder8. The finite element model closely matched with the structural components of the original bridge. The new improved model is a better representation as it was calibrated with four sets of field data collected over a period of two years. The field test data from both tests shows that the girders are simply supported on the abutment. But the girders in the model are designed as fixed end beams to have a reasonable value for the modulus of concrete used in the model. In reality it can be assumed that the support condition is between fixed and simply supported. It was also demonstrated that the deck had very little influence on the distribution of loads in the structure for these bridges. The majority of the load transfer between girders was most likely due to the diaphragms. The Impact Factor based on one set of experimental results was 1.217. However, for analysis the LRFD value of 1.33 was used. The Load Rating Factor for bridge B-0071 was 1.66 and for bridge B-0171 was 2.48 with the governing truck loading being the Design load Type Tandem. These rating factors were based on girder performance only due to insufficient deck information.

Book excerpt: Overpass girders are risked by the impact of the traffic, over height vehicle, travelling under the structure, creating a hazard for the drivers over and under the bridge. When a bridge girder is damaged the repair solution adopted has to meet the following criteria: - Safety. The repaired structure has to provide a minimum level of service to guarantee the safety of the traffic during the life of the structure. - Repair time: The repair time has to be minimized to limit risks and inconveniences for the traffic. - Economy. The adopted solution has not only to fulfill the previous requirements, but also has to be the most economical. Nowadays a lot of construction projects have to confront this kind of issue. The Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Express construction project had to solve this problem. The LBJ project is located on I-635 and I-35 in North Dallas, Texas. The bridge number 54 of the LBJ project was hit by a truck, causing severe damage on one of its girders. The incident caused loss of concrete and exposed several strands. The solution adopted for the engineers was install fiber glass rebar and fill with repair mortar. This study models the damaged girder before and after the repair to analyze its structural behavior. The data obtained by this model have been compared to the data obtained by the field test. The ABAQUS software has been used to model the girder. The objectives of this study are provide a better understanding of the structural behavior and propose adequate modeling techniques of beams repaired with GFRP rebar. The proposed techniques will help to establish adequate repair procedures and to anticipate the structural behavior of damaged girders prior to the repair process
