Information on the best means of studying geology in the field in the British Isles is followed by descriptions of 194 geological itineraries based on a number of centres and a final chapter on the geology evident on 31 journeys by road, rail and coastal boat. Sketch maps indicate the routes of all the excursions with maps showing the geology of each region. These are detailed for those areas for which modern geological maps are not available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the British Isles The completeness of the geological record in the British Isles, the variations in the facies of the different formations from place to place, and the immense volume of the literature that has accumulated, render it impossible for one man to do justice to the Regional Geology of the area. It was therefore decided to divide the work among a number of specialists, each of whom could write with authority on the subject allotted to him and be individually responsible for his contributions. Every effort has, however, been made to secure as much uniformity as was possible in bibliographical and typographical details. The majority of the illustrations have been taken by permission from the official Reports of the Geological Surveys and the publications of the Geological Society and of the Geologists Association, the exact source being given in each case. The general maps have been prepared by A. Morley Davies, who has made a careful study of the structural geology of the whole country. He also had the advantage of detailed information supplied to him by other contributors. I am however responsible for the symbols employed on the structural maps, and the system of shading adopted in those showing the distribution of the different formations at the surface. Other maps and diagrams have been specially prepared for the present work by the contributors, who are identified by their initials. The folds and faults of England and Wales are usually grouped in four systems, according to their general axial directions: 1. The Charnian system, with N.W. - S.E. direction; 2. The Caledonian system, with N.E. - S.W. direction; 3. The Malvernian system, with N. - S. direction; 4. The Armerican system, with direction varying from E.N.E. - W.S.W. through E. - W. to W.N.W. - E.S.E. To each of these systems an age of predominance may be assigned, but the use of any name must not be taken as implying age: it denotes merely direction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GEOLOGICAL FIELD TECHNIQUES The understanding of Earth processes and environments over geological time is highly dependent upon both the experience that can only be gained through doing fieldwork, and the collection of reliable data and appropriate samples in the field. This textbook explains the main data gathering techniques used by geologists in the field and the reasons for these, with emphasis throughout on how to make effective field observations and record these in suitable formats. Equal weight is given to assembling field observations from igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock types. There are also substantial chapters on producing a field notebook, collecting structural information, recording fossil data and constructing geological maps. Geological Field Techniques is designed for students, amateur enthusiasts and professionals who have a background in geology and wish to collect field data on rocks and geological features. Teaching aspects of this textbook include: step-by-step guides to essential practical skills such as using a compass-clinometer, making a geological map and drawing a field sketch; tricks of the trade, checklists, flow charts and short worked examples; over 200 illustrations of a wide range of field notes, maps and geological features; appendices with the commonly used rock description and classification diagrams; a supporting website hosted by Wiley-Blackwell is available at www.wiley.com/go/coe/geology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential reading for first- and second-year Geology undergraduates, A-Level Geology teachers and students and enthusiastic amateur geologists. The book includes a comprehensive glossary, maps and excellent full-colour illustrations, and is based on part of a second-level Open University short course of the same name. The landscape and surface environment of the continental crust that now forms the islands of Great Britain, Ireland and the adjacent lesser isles has undergone dramatic changes during the geological history of the Earth. This book takes the reader on a geological tour of the British Isles, showing how changes in climate, sea-level and relief can be recognized and understood in the geological record. The reader is asked to use a variety of data and geological principles to interpret how and why different rocks formed, and to identify past environments and tectonic settings. By unravelling the geological history of the British Isles, a remarkable insight is gained into the geological evolution of the whole Earth.

Book excerpt: This Special Report comprehensively describes the stratigraphy and correlation of the Tertiary (Paleogene–Neogene) rocks of NW Europe and the adjacent Atlantic Ocean and is the summation of fifty years of research on Tertiary sediments by Chris King. His book is essential reading for all geologists who deal with Tertiary rocks across NW Europe, including those in the petroleum industry and geotechnical services as well as academic stratigraphers and palaeontologists. Introductory sections on chronostratigraphy, biostratigraphy and other methods of dating and correlation are followed by a regional summary of Tertiary sedimentary basins and their framework and an introduction to Tertiary igneous rocks. The third and largest segment comprises the regional stratigraphic summaries. Regions covered are the North Sea Basin, onshore areas of southern England and the eastern English Channel area, the North Atlantic margins (including non-marine basins in the Irish Sea and elsewhere) and the Paleogene igneous rocks of Scotland.
