Book excerpt: From the Introduction: This volume is dedicated to the remarkable career of Professor Peter Schmidt and the role he has played in mentoring us, his PhD students. Peter’s accomplishments are legendary among his students and the profession. Each of the papers in this Festschrift is a research work executed by a former PhD student of Peter’s, from his days at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to his time at Michigan State University. Most of the papers were presented at The Conference in Honor of Peter Schmidt, June 30 - July 2, 2011. The conference was largely attended by his former students and one current student, who traveled from as far as Europe and Asia to honor Peter. This was a conference to celebrate Peter’s contribution to our contributions. By “our contributions” we mean the research papers that make up this Festschrift and the countless other publications by his students represented and not represented in this volume. Peter’s students may have their families to thank for much that is positive in their lives. However, if we think about it, our professional lives would not be the same without the lessons and the approaches to decision making that we learned from Peter. We spent our days together at Peter’s conference and the months since reminded of these aspects of our personalities and life goals that were enhanced, fostered, and nurtured by the very singular experiences we have had as Peter’s students. We recognized in 2011 that it was unlikely we would all be together again to celebrate such a wonderful moment in ours and Peter’s lives and pledged then to take full advantage of it. We did then, and we are now in the form of this volume.

Beuken on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday and his retirement as Professor of Old Testament Studies at the Faculty of Theology of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Wim Beuken has dedicated much of his scholarly career to the study of one Old Testament book, the Book of Isaiah. It seemed natural, therefore, that the present volume and its editors should honour Beuken's scholarly achievements with a collection of essays devoted to the Book of Isaiah and related topics. The 28 contributions are presented under four section headings. The first section contains a series of thematically oriented studies on the Book of Isaiah as a whole. The second section focuses on the so-called Proto-Isaiah and includes contributions dealing with PI as a whole together with contributions which have concentrated on specific portions thereof. The third section includes a number of articles which address issues related to specific themes and pericopes in Deutero- and Trito-Isaiah. The fourth and final section turns its attention to questions regarding inter-textuality and the history of reception.

The heterogenous material (both in terms of the range of issues tackled and in terms of the approaches adopted by the authors) in the three sections of the volume finds itself a common denominator in the idea of “traveling” and “journey”, around which they are organized. In the first section, Traveling across Identities and Emotions, Pia Brînzeu touches upon some identity issues, in dealing with a form of subversion in Coz Shakespeare, by Marin Sorescu; Jaques Ramel argues against the opinion that Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream was written to be performed as an epithalamium during wedding ceremonies; Adolphe Haberer brings to the fore the non-hero features of the main character in Virginia Woolf’s Jacob’s Room; Liliane Louvel writes about the mirror in literary texts, insisting on its potential to send back graphic reflections onto these texts; and Maurizio Gotti discusses definitional criteria, i.e., the principles according to which a term should be defined. In section two, Traveling in Time and Space, Slávka Tomaščíková speaks about the status, functions and characteristics of media narrative discourse during the last decade; Aleksandra Kedzierska follows and characterizes various types of journeys in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, highlighting their significance for celebration; Alberto Lázaro traces the changes that medieval stories, abundant in sexual references and instances of adultery, have suffered to meet the publication requirements during Franco’s regime in Spain; Stephen Tapscott focuses on the relationship between contemporary American poets’ lyric and previously written works (especially Modernist); while Fernando Galván examines a number of literary texts centering on cities that have been dreamed of or imagined by various writers, to illustrate decay, deconstruction and regeneration. The third section, Traveling between Languages and Cultures, opens with Smiljana Komar’s account of the translation of some frequent English discourse markers into Slovene and continues with Loredana Pungă’s illustration of the issue of loss and gain in translation. Irma Taavitsainen and Päivi Pahta highlight the functions of the English politeness marker please, pliis in Finnish, and investigate whether and how its meanings have changed when it has been adopted into the host language. Lachlan Mackenzie’s contribution rounds off the volume with some suggestions on how recent changes in the English language should be taken into consideration when teachers of English evaluate the linguistic performance of their students.
