Book excerpt: Excerpt from Festivals, Holy Days, and Saints' Days: A Study in Origins and Survivals in Church Ceremonies Secular Customs Many great scholars, both archaeologists and anthropologists, have discussed the obscurities surrounding the origin of Festivals. The idea of this little book is not to dogmatize, but rather to note practices still existing, or but lately obsolete, to trace their probable connexion with those of the Middle Ages, and where a pre-Christian connexion can be traced, to mention it with due reserve. In some cases, bygone ceremonies will be described for the sake of the light they throw on many still surviving amongst us. English ceremonies will be first regarded, and then such Continental or Eastern rites as can be compared with those of the English people, indicating a similar origin. The endeavour will be to select those which deserve note by their typical character, but not to attempt to cover such a huge field as the description of the Catholic ceremonies in all countries must necessarily involve. Book Synopsis The Festive State by : David M. Guss
Download or read book The Festive State written by David M. Guss and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-01-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If, as David Guss argues, culture is a contested terrain with constantly changing contours, then festivals are its battlegrounds, where people come to fight and dispute in large acts of public display. Festive behavior, long seen by anthropologists and folklorists as the "uniform expression of a collective consciousness, is contentious and often subversive," and The Festive State is an eye-opening guide to its workings. Guss investigates "the ideology of tradition," combining four case studies in a radical multisite ethnography to demonstrate how in each instance concepts of race, ethnicity, history, gender, and nationhood are challenged and redefined. In a narrative as colorful as the events themselves, Guss presents the Afro-Venezuelan celebration of San Juan, the "neo-Indian" Day of the Monkey, the mestizo ritual of Tamunangue, and the cultural policies and products of a British multinational tobacco corporation. All these illustrate the remarkable fluidity of festive behavior as well as its importance in articulating different cultural interests.

Book Synopsis The British Folk Revival by : Michael Brocken
Download or read book The British Folk Revival written by Michael Brocken and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 20 years ago Michael Brocken created from his doctoral research, what became both a seminal and contested volume concerning the social mores surrounding the British Folk Revival up to that point in time: The British Folk Revival 1944–2002. In this long-overdue second edition he revisits not only his own research, but also that of others from the 1990s and early 21st century. He then considers how a discourse of folkloric authenticity emerged in the closing years of the 19th century and how a worrying nationalistic immanence came to surround folk music and dance during the inter-war years. Brocken also proposes that the media: records, radio and TV in post-WWII folk revivalism can offer us important insights into how self-directed learning of the folk guitar emerged. Brocken moves on to consider the business structures of the contemporary folk scene and how relationships are formed between contemporary folk business and the digital and social media spheres. In his penultimate chapter he discusses the masculinisation of folk traditions and asks important questions about how our folk traditions are carried and are authorised. In the final chapter he also considers the rise of an exciting new folk live music built environment.
