Download or read book The Pop Festival written by George McKay and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I'm going to camp out on the land ... try and get my soul free'. So sang Joni Mitchell in 1970 on 'Woodstock'. But Woodstock is only the tip of the iceberg. Popular music festivals are one of the strikingly successful and enduring features of seasonal popular cultural consumption for young people and older generations of enthusiasts. From pop and rock to folk, jazz and techno, under stars and canvas, dancing in the streets and in the mud, the pleasures and politics of the carnival since the 1950s are discussed in this innovative and richly-illustrated collection. The Pop Festival brings scholarship in cultural studies, media studies, musicology, sociology, and history together in one volume to explore the music festival as a key event in the cultural landscape - and one of major interest to young people as festival-goers themselves and as students.

This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After three successful research studies and three scientific books, the EU-China International Literary Festival international project team focused on testing and applying the international festival research methodology. Based on previous research studies, reports and scientific books, the authors had sufficient knowledge of the methodological guidelines for conducting demanding multilingual and cross-cultural research. The research and methodological definition of the scientific book is the EU-China literary festival conceived as the interaction of European and Chinese authors with Chinese audiences and the promotion of European culture in Chinese cities. This book focuses on the analysis of the 4th EU-China International Literary Festival organised by the Delegation of the European Union to China. The goal of the Festival is to bring distant cultures closer by virtue of literature as a medium, and the Festival has been held twice a year in China since 2017. The audience could attend Festival events either at the venue (n = 6,914) or online (n = 377,098). The number of online attendees far exceeded the number of visitors who attended live events, which strongly popularised EU-China cooperation, cross-cultural differences, new media monitoring literary events, literature itself and the authors. The research methodology was used to measure the views of three groups of stakeholders in the EU-China International Literary Festival (n = 70), i.e. 1. Festival visitors, 2. European authors (international participants), and 3. Chinese authors (national participants). By analysing the views of the three groups of respondents, the book analyses the measure of both the success of the EU-China International Literary Festival and the level of satisfaction with the Festival. Comparison and identification of similarities and differences among the three groups of respondents is one of the research goals. Based on a large number of media releases and live streamings, the Festival can be seen as a highly successful promotional product where the culture of the European Union was presented to the Chinese visitors. In addition to the research methodology, the scientific book also provides the design of research procedures applied in multilingual research by international research teams. An enviable longitudinal series of data collected from the three groups of stakeholders was created by the fourth measurement of Festival success. The tested international festival research methodology can be used by future researchers of festival phenomena for developing an instrument for gathering the views of festival participants (authors, visitors and organisers) of literary and all other related festivals. The efforts of this research study are ultimately aimed at a systematic increase in the quality of festivals, ensuring continued funding, and laying the groundwork for related festivals funded by the EU Delegation to China.
Book Synopsis Origin and Transformation of the Ancient Israelite Festival Calendar by : Jan A. Wagenaar
Download or read book Origin and Transformation of the Ancient Israelite Festival Calendar written by Jan A. Wagenaar and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focusses on the origin and transformation of the priestly festival calendar. Since the epoch-making work of Julius Wellhausen at the end of the 19th century the differences between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars have often been explained in terms of a gradual evolution, which shows an increasing historicisation, denaturalisation and ritualisation. The festivals were in Wellhausen's view gradually detached from agricultural conditions and celebrated more and more at fixed points in the year. This study tries to show that the changes in the priestly festival calendar reflect a conscious effort to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the semi-annual layout of the Babylonian festival year. The ramifications of the change only come to the fore after a careful study of the agricultural conditions of ancient Israel - and Mesopotamia - makes clear that passover and the festival of unleavened bread were originally celebrated in the second month of the year. The first month of the year envisaged by the priestly festival calendar for the celebration of passover and the festival of unleavened bread in turn mirrors the date of one of the two semi-annual Babylonian New Year festivals. The two Babylonian New Year festivals were celebrated exactly six months apart at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. In order to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the Babylonian scheme with two New Year festivals a year, the date of passover and the festival of unleavened bread had to be moved up by one month. The consequences for the origin of passover, the festival of unleavened bread, the festival of weeks and the festival of huts are charted and the relations between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars are determined anew.

Book Synopsis Apartheid's Festival by : Leslie Witz
Download or read book Apartheid's Festival written by Leslie Witz and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apartheid's Festival highlights the conflicts and debates that surrounded the 1952 celebration of the 300th anniversary of the landing of Jan Van Riebeeck and the founding of Cape Town, South Africa. Taking place at the height of the apartheid era, the festival was viewed by many as an opportunity for the government to promote its nationalist, separatist agenda in grand fashion. Leslie Witz's fine-grained examination of newspapers, brochures, pamphlets, and advertising materials reveals the expectations of the festival planners as well as how the festival was engineered, historical figures were reconstructed, and the ANC and other anti-apartheid organizations mounted opposition to it. While laying open the darker motives of the apartheid regime, Witz shows that the production of local history is part of a global process forged by the struggle between colonialism and resistance. Readers interested in South Africa, representations of nationalism, and the making of public history will find Apartheid's Festival to be an important study of a society in transition.

Book Synopsis Research Methodology of the International Festival by : Josipa Mijoč
Download or read book Research Methodology of the International Festival written by Josipa Mijoč and published by J. J. Strossmayer University of Osijek Faculty of Economics in Osijek. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Wilson et al. (2017), festivals are events held at a particular point in time, repeated in a regular manner and open to the public. Festivals differ from special events as they occur on a regular basis, whereas ‘a special event is a onetime or infrequently occurring event outside the normal range/program or activities of the sponsoring or organising body’ (Getz 1997). Although festival types and themes may differ, they have some characteristics in common. For instance, regardless of the theme of a festival, all of themhave similar stakeholders, i.e. organisations, audiences, exhibitors, sponsors (financiers), media, etc. Despite growing research interest in festivals, little attention has been put on simultaneous exploration of the key stakeholders of a festival. The research and methodological focus of this scientific book is the analysis of the EU- China Literary Festival, which is conceived as the interaction of European and Chinese authors with the Chinese audience, and the promotion of European culture in Chinese metropolises. The goal of the Festival is to bring distant cultures closer by means of literature as a medium. This book focuses on the analysis of the four festivals organised by the Delegation of the European Union to China, the EU-China International Literary Festival. The Festival has been held twice a year in China since 2017. The audience could follow the Festival-related events at the venue (n = 1,623) or online (n = 56,621). Online visitors have outnumbered visitors who attended physical events, which strongly popularised European-Chinese cooperation, literature and authors through all levels of communication. The aim of this scientific book is to present the process of developing a research methodology and establishing assumptions for its wider application. The research methodology measures the views of three stakeholder groups involved in the EU-China International Literary Festival (n = 73), i.e. 1) Festival visitors, 2) European authors (international participants), and 3) Chinese authors (domestic participants). In addition, the book explores how successfully the EU-China International Literary Festival has achieved its goal, mission and vision (the exchange of ideas and interaction between authors and audiences, or dedication to cultural diversity of China and Europe), and whether it is possible to successfully measure Festival satisfaction in relation to all groups of respondents. Comparison and identification of similarities and differences among the three groups of respondents is one of the research goals. This scientific book contributes to the field by increasing the number of tested research instruments that are adequate for determining the attitudes and satisfaction of Festival stakeholders. Additionally, research contribution is reflected in harmonisation of the methodology used in festival research and in identifying both common and specific dimensions depending on the creative industry sector promoted by the festival in focus (for instance, literary, communication, film, and other festivals in particular creative industry sectors). Analysing the research results, statistically significant differences in the expectations and satisfaction with the Festival segments were determined with regard to the role of the respondent examined. Greater satisfaction was reported by the authors (panel participants), and a lower level of satisfaction was observed among visitors to the Festival. Based on a large number of media releases and live streamings, the Festival can be seen as a highly successful promotional product where the culture in the European Union was presented to Chinese visitors. The tested research methodology for researching international festivals can be used by future researchers of festival phenomena for developing an instrument for measuring success of a festival from a multiple stakeholder perspective. The efforts of this research study are ultimately aimed at a systematic increase in the quality of festivals, ensuring continued funding, and laying the groundwork for related festivals funded by the EU Delegation to China.

Book Synopsis Festival and Event Management in Nordic Countries by : Tommy D. Andersson
Download or read book Festival and Event Management in Nordic Countries written by Tommy D. Andersson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on events-related research marks a watershed in the development of a "Nordic School" of festival and event research. Each of the chapters presents a new and interesting approach to the study of events, in terms of methods, perspectives or content. It is mostly rooted in management theory but also incorporating other perspectives that enhance our understanding of the phenomena. Implications for real-world applications in tourism, hospitality, and community development are also at the fore. The scholarship is comprehensive, not focused on only tourism or economic aspects. Management theory, including stakeholder management, social networks, and institutionalization processes is being applied. Attention is being given to the multiple roles festivals and events play in society, and to evaluation of their worth and impacts. Innovative methods are being developed to examine event experiences, innovation processes, and success factors. There is now a critical mass of scholars in the Nordic countries that share a strong interest in event studies, and they are engaged in collaborative research, making it an appealing and innovative region for other event students and researchers to visit. It can be expected that the Nordic school will take an increasingly important place in the development of event studies, which is now truly global in terms of scholarship and university degree programs. This book was originally published as a special issue of Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism.
Book Synopsis International Theatre Festivals and Twenty-First-Century Interculturalism by : Ric Knowles
Download or read book International Theatre Festivals and Twenty-First-Century Interculturalism written by Ric Knowles and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ric Knowles' study is a politically urgent, erudite intervention into the ecology of theatre and performance festivals in an international context. Since the 1990s there has been an exponential increase in the number and type of festivals taking place around the world. Events that used merely to be events are now 'festivalized': structured, marketed, and promoted in ways that stress urban centres as tourist destinations and “creative cities” as targets of corporate enterprise. Ric Knowles examines the structure, content, and impact of international festivals that draw upon and represent multiple cultures and the roles they play in one of the most urgent processes of our times: intercultural negotiation and exchange. Covering a vast geographical sweep and exploring festival models both new and ancient, the work sets compelling new standards of practice for post-pandemic festivals.
