Book excerpt: The joint FAO/IAEA Division, in co-operation with scientists in eight countries, conducted co-ordinated field experiments with maize using isotopically labelled N- and P- fertilizers during the period 1964-68 inclusive. In each year of the program the same experimental treatments and techniques were used in each experiment in order to enable the significance not only of the tratments but also the effect of the widely differing soil and climatic conditions on their effectiveness to be evaluated. The primary objective of the four-year co-ordinated maize fertility experiments was to assess the applicability of selected fertilization practices for maize grown in different areas of ghe world. Perhaps an equally significant objective of the experiments was to provide quantitative information, previously not available, on the level of efficiency of use of nitrogen fertilizer by maize grown on typical maize-growing areas in selected developing countries. The data obtained during the four-year program clearly demonstrated the contrasting results that can be expected depending on the environmental and soil conditions existing at an individual plot site. The following generalizations must not be considered as applicable to any one particular site but as general guidelines conducive to sound fertilizer practices for maize fertilization. 1. Applications of a part of the fertilizer N, applied together with the phosphorus in a band adjacent to the row at time of seeding, markely accelerated the uptake of fertilizer (...).

Book excerpt: Corn or maize is a crop that originated in Mexico and has spread all over the world as a major food crop. Sustainable production of a corn field crop as grain corn for feed, food and biofuels, as well as sweet corn for fresh market or processing, and as silage for high energy sources, requires scientific management of nutrients along with several other crop management practices such as proper plant population density, timely seeding and harvesting, soil water, weeds and pests control. Corn has become the major item in the diet of many tropical peoples, the main grain used for animal feed in temperate regions, as well as new stocks for many other purposes including recently used as feedstock for biofuels. Rapid expansion of grain based ethanol production in North America, has already caused concern about future food and feed supplies. This important book gathers the latest research from around the world in this dynamic field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen is an essential element for plant growth and development and a key agricultural input-but in excess it can lead to a host of problems for human and ecological health. Across the globe, distribution of fertilizer nitrogen is very uneven, with some areas subject to nitrogen pollution and others suffering from reduced soil fertility, diminished crop production, and other consequences of inadequate supply. Agriculture and the Nitrogen Cycle provides a global assessment of the role of nitrogen fertilizer in the nitrogen cycle. The focus of the book is regional, emphasizing the need to maintain food and fiber production while minimizing environmental impacts where fertilizer is abundant, and the need to enhance fertilizer utilization in systems where nitrogen is limited. The book is derived from a workshop held by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) in Kampala, Uganda, that brought together the world's leading scientists to examine and discuss the nitrogen cycle and related problems. It contains an overview chapter that summarizes the group's findings, four chapters on cross-cutting issues, and thirteen background chapters. The book offers a unique synthesis and provides an up-to-date, broad perspective on the issues of nitrogen fertilizer in food production and the interaction of nitrogen and the environment.

Book excerpt: Integrated nutrient management (INM) is a management strategy that aims at maintaining or adjusting of soil fertility and plant nutrient supply to an optimum level for sustaining the desired crop productivity through all possible sources of plant nutrients in an integrated manner through a balanced use of fertilizers combined with organic sources. Growth parameters, yield components, yield of maize were highly enhanced by integrated use of chemical and organic fertilizer is crucial for assuring food security. Combined use decreases the nutrient losses by slow release and reducing the input cost of fertilizer. Different kinds of organic materials such as FYM, animal manures, green manures, crop residues, composts, and industrial wastes have been used in maize systems. The concepts and research evidences from eminent scientists proves that integrated nutrient management enhances the productivity of maize and soil fertility sustenance.

Book excerpt: The improvement in global crop production over the past several decades has been associated with increased use of nitrogen (N) fertilizer. However, on average, less than 50% of the nitrogen added to croplands globally is harvested as crop product. Inefficient use of N fertilizer by crops will result in substantial agricultural nitrogen losses, posing threats to human and ecosystem health. Crop production must increase dramatically to meet the growing demand for food and biofuels projected for 2050. To boost crop yield with lowered environmental cost, the use of high-potential crop cultivars and efficient nitrogen fertilizer management are required. Recent advances in N management practices, such as enhanced-efficiency fertilizer use, improved manure management and machine deep placement of fertilizer have opened up new strategies to achieve improved crop production with N use reduction. A better understanding of the key crop traits and regulatory processes in response to N fertilizer managements will facilitate the increase in crop yield, N use efficiency while minimizing impacts on the environment.

Book excerpt: Emerging Development of Agriculture in East Africa offers case studies that find promise in many new innovations. Farmers in Uganda have quickly learned the management of NERICA rice (a new upland rice variety), which is being disseminated in a limited way in the region. Also in Uganda, farmers living in more remote areas have improved access to markets due to the expansion of mobile phones. In Kenya, improved milk marketing systems have increased efficiency and led to tangible increases in the adoption of dairy production technologies. And the adoption of intensive dairy production systems in Kenya and Uganda are providing significant amounts of manure and positively impacting yields of maize and banana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrient management practices in no-tillage systems may need adjustment to maximize profits because the distribution of nutrients and plant roots are affected by the lack of tillage. This 3-yr study evaluated (i) no-tillage corn response to surface broadcast and subsurface placement of fertilizer N, P, or K, (ii) no-tillage soybean response to broadcast and banded P or K as well as the direct and residual responses to P and K, and (iii) no-tillage corn hybrids response to complete starter fertilizer. The results suggest that at high soil test levels, response to fertilizers would be difficult to achieve with consistency regardless of placement method. Although P and K stratification existed at each site, favorable moisture and high soil P and K levels probably precluded any grain yield response to added fertilizer or placement in several site-years. Corn and soybean yields were even reduced on a high testing soil. Broadcast applications were equal or better than banded applications.
