Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ferrell's Elementary Arithmetic This book was prepared primarily as a first book in Arith metic for those schools in which a text is not put into the hands of the pupil before the beginning of the third school year. It contains the mathematics for the third, fourth, and fifth school years. But, if preceded by Wooster's Arithmetics or their equivalents in the first, second and third years, Parts One and Two may be completed during the fourth year. In that event, only time enough need be taken with Part One to review hastily and to understand the plan of work preparatory to taking up Part Two. This is the companion book of Ferrell's Advanced Arith metic, which contains the mathematics for the sixth, seventh and eighth school years. Some of these changes - more particularly those in the early part of the book - have been necessary the better to relate the Advanced book of the Series to the Elementary book, which has at the same time undergone revision. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Arithmetic The purpose of this book is to aid the teacher in making conditions favorable for the contact of the learner with mathematical realities. Since the simplest as well as the most complex relations become known only through mental activity in comparing, attention is given to an environment which shall continually induce this activity. The comparison of magnitudes includes all the other operations of arithmetic. This is apparent when we reflect that all advance in knowing is by progressive acts of analysis and synthesis. Whether we compare by means of the object or by means of its symbol, the mind should still be free to move from the vague to the definite through its own acts. In the first book of this series it was said: "That quantity is a ratio between terms which are themselves relative is a truth which has often been pointed out, but which the work of the schools shows to be felt by few." In the minds of many bred upon the language of mathematics, the mode of expression has acquired an independence which excludes the reality. The presentation of relative magnitude as a subject of study in the elementary school has, however, met with gratifying response. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Arithmetic: Advanced Book This work furnishes the material for a thorough study of the great essentials of arithmetic in the advanced classes of the elementary school. In general, in the schools of. This country the essential feature of the work of Grade VII is a thorough study of percentage and its applications, while Grade VIII considers arithmetic from the stand point of the pupil's relation to the commercial, civic, and industrial world which he is about to enter. These two great features have been emphasized in the general plan and the contents of this book. How to make the connection between school life and society in the later years of the elementary school is one of the most serious educational problems. Some writers in arithmetic attempt to solve this problem by substantially abandoning mathematics and devoting their attention largely to sociology an interesting experiment but not arithmetic. Others, and the authors of this series among them, seek to preserve a worthy and perfectly graded sequence of arith metical topics, making the connection by showing the application of each topic to some phase of the business life which the pupil is about to enter. In this series the further effort has been made to present only the great essentials of arithmetic, and to dwell constantly upon the application of these essentials to social and business life. Unreal fractions, such obsolete methods as compound proportion, and such antiquated customs as partnership involving time are all set aside; and the space thus gained is assigned to vital topics of this generation and this country. Certain other topics, such as the metric system, land measure, and foreign money, which may properly have a place in.the work of the school, but which sometimes have to be omitted. The fundamental operations upon integers, common fractions, decimals, denominate numbers, and numbers expressed by letters, are followed by their applications to business and to various employments. The introduction of the chapter on literal quantities is somewhat of an innovation, but is in accord with the views of leading teachers, and is based upon sound principles. The elementary parts of algebra should be studied before the advanced parts of arithmetic, because they are more easily com prehended, and because they afford valuable assistance in difficult problems. For the same reasons, the solution of many classes of problems should be taught by algebraic processes, before they are taught by the intricate methods required by analysis. The fact, too, that most pupils must leave school quite early, is a strong reason for introducing into arithmetic the elements of algebra and the conclusions of geometry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Stone-Millis Arithmetic Advanced IN the preparation of this series of arithmetics the chief aims have been more adequately to adapt the subject matter to the experiences, interests, and immediate needs of children, and to provide means for a' mastery of the formal phases of arithmetic through more scientifically organized drills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arithmetic: Parts VII and VIII, Advanced Lessons Bearing in mind that a thorough knowledge of arithmetic is perhaps more frequently the cause of success in life than is any other single factor, one can hardly overestimate the importance of this subject to the future welfare of the child, nor can one fail to realize how great is the responsibility which rests on those whose duty it is to provide for his edu cation in this branch. No book or series of books can possibly illustrate every use to which numbers can be put, but if the principles under lying their use are properly taught, the child can reason for himself the proper application of his knowledge to any given problem. Furthermore, as he must know not merely how to solve a problem, but how to solve it in the quickest and simplest manner, he must know not merely the various proc esses, but their construction as well; he must be able to analyze to such an extent that when a problem is presented to him, he can distinguish the facts which are relevant from those which are irrelevant, he can separate the known from the unknown, he can arrange the known in logical order for his processes, and he can use the shortest processes pos sible. An attempt to give the pupil this ability is the motive for this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Algebraic Arithmetic: An Exposition of the Theory, and Practice of Advanced Arithmetic The introduction of elementary algebra into the schools is of more doubtful value for two principal reasons. The conceptions of geometry can be represented by fig ures and objects, and are therefore readily grasped by the child, but those of algebra can be so represented only to a very limited degree; and, for the most part, are abstractions the nature of which the child comprehends with difficulty. Moreover, the time that can be allotted to the subject in the grammar school is barely sufficient to carry the pupil over the essentially uninteresting details of algebraic manipulation that necessarily precede any but the Simplest applications of the science. But while the wisdom of introducing elementary algebra into the schools may, for these and minor reasons, be seriously questioned, the experience of several years as a teacher has led the author to the conclusion that the application of certain algebraic conceptions to arithmetic would contribute largely toward the rational presentation of the subject, thus increasing its disciplinary value, and at the same time preparing the way for a natural transi tion to the algebra of the high school. These conceptions are the use of letters as the general representatives of (positive) numbers and of the equation to express their relations.
