Book Synopsis Cats and Conservationists by : Dara M. Wald
Download or read book Cats and Conservationists written by Dara M. Wald and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cats and Conservationists is the first multidisciplinary analysis of the heated debate about free-roaming cats. The debate pits conservationists against cat lovers, who disagree both on the ecological damage caused by the cats and the best way to manage them. An impassioned and spirited conflict, it also sheds light on larger questions about how we interpret science, incorporate diverse perspectives, and balance competing values in order to encourage constructive dialogue on contentious social and environmental issues. On one side of the cat debate stand many environmentalists, especially birders and conservation organizations, who believe that outdoor cats seriously threaten native wildlife. On the other side are many animal welfare advocates, who believe that outdoor cats generally do not pose a major ecological threat and that it is possible for cats and wildlife to coexist. They believe that it is possible, mainly through trap-neuter-return projects (TNR), to keep free-roaming cat populations in check without killing large numbers of cats. Careful analysis suggests that there remain important questions about the science on both cat predation and TNR effectiveness. Yet both sides of the conflict insist that the evidence is clear-cut. This false certainty contributes to conflict between conservationists and cat lovers, and obscures common goals that could generate constructive discussions and collaborative efforts among scientists, policymakers, conservationists, and animal welfare advocates. Cats and Conservationists aims to facilitate such collaboration in order to manage outdoor cats and minimize the damage they cause. It also offers models for constructive debates about the public role of science in other polarized public conflicts over science and environmental topics.

Book Synopsis Eastern Orthodox Christianity and Animal Suffering by : Christina Nellist
Download or read book Eastern Orthodox Christianity and Animal Suffering written by Christina Nellist and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first academic work in Eastern Orthodox theological literature on the subject of animal suffering and human soteriology. It represents a natural progression of the contemporary Eastern Orthodox academic debate on the environment, and will be of interest not only to academic scholars in theology, religion, philosophy and ethics, but also to the wider Christian and secular communities. Using Biblical and Patristic teachings, together with new social science research and contemporary science, it presents arguments that animal suffering is against God’s Will, and that the abuse or misuse of animals or indifference to animal suffering will result in negative consequences for human salvation. The book posits a revisionist interpretation of the Noahic narrative when addressing the challenging question of why God allows the dispensation of animals as food, and offers compelling arguments on why the contemporary animal food production industries and animal testing model should be rejected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Israeli/Palestinian conflict is not mainly about politics, nor religion, nor even geo-politics. It is about pathology. The traumas of the 20th century have driven millions of intelligent, capable people into active psychological pathologies, which they experience as ideological realities. Some of the cult-like groups associated with Christian evangelicals and the national-religious settlers in Israel will settle for nothing less than an apocalyptic religious war to punish the world for allowing the Holocaust to happen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zenn Scarlett is a bright, determined, occasionally a-little-too-smart-for-her-own-good 17-year-old girl training hard to become an exoveterinarian. That means she’s specializing in the treatment of exotic alien life forms, mostly large and generally dangerous. Her novice year of training at the Ciscan Cloister Exovet Clinic on Mars will find her working with alien patients from whalehounds the size of a hay barn to a baby Kiran Sunkiller, a colossal floating creature that will grow up to carry a whole sky-city on its back. But after a series of inexplicable animal escapes from the school and other near-disasters, the Cloister is in real danger of being shut down by a group of alien-hating officials. If that happens, Zenn knows only too well the grim fate awaiting the creatures she loves. Now, she must unravel the baffling events plaguing her school, before someone is hurt or killed, before everything she cares about is ripped away from her and her family forever. To solve this mystery – and live to tell about it – Zenn will have to put her new exovet skills to work in ways she never imagined, and in the process learn just how powerful compassion and empathy can be.
Book Synopsis The Homebrewed Christianity Guide to the End Times by : Jeffrey C. Pugh
Download or read book The Homebrewed Christianity Guide to the End Times written by Jeffrey C. Pugh and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People still believe that Jesus is returning to earth . . . and soon! Like Jesus first followers, millions of Christians hold fast to the idea that we are living in the last days, yet here we are, two thousand years later, still waiting. In The Homebrewed Christianity Guide to the End Times Jeffrey C. Pugh recounts his own brief sojourn in an apocalyptic cult. Looking back now, as a respected professor of theology, he tackles how Christianity in general, and the evangelical world in particular, have been captivated by the theological innovation known as Dispensationalism that emerged in the nineteenth century. The embrace of this idea has influenced millions, leading to such cultural phenomena as the Left Behind books and movies, and Christian Zionism. But Pugh argues that the belief in the imminent return of Christ has in fact been harmful to Christian engagement with the world, and he builds this argument on a thorough and occasionally sassy reading of biblical texts and church history.
Author :Alvin Reiter Publisher :AuthorHouse ISBN 13 :1438925123 Total Pages :374 pages Book Rating :4.4/5 (389 download)
Download or read book written by Alvin Reiter and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He spread the cancer," Karen said in disbelief. "He spread the cancer." EVEN DOCTORS CRY tells the story of Dr. Alvin Reiter, his success as a prominent Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, his love for his profession and his pride in his work. That work, included being the lead surgeon on the team that reconstructed the shattered face of Rodney King, whose name became a household word after he was beaten by the LAPD. "I always felt like Clark Kent putting on my surgical outfit," Reiter wrote about his transformative role. Then came, however, a time when even Superman could not help. In 1994, Alvin was diagnosed with incurable Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and was given less than a 40% chance of living 6 years, while his wife Karen was diagnosed with early breast cancer in 1999 and given a 95% chance of total cure. The Doctor survived, but Karen did not. She died of metastatic breast cancer in May 2003. Her premature death was aided and abetted by her oncologist, breast and liver surgeons and the gross failure of the medical system in which human error, negligence and hubris can - and did - take a life. The facts are chilling and irrefutable. In the midst of Karen's struggle for her life, Reiter became the target of an unwarranted investigation by the FBI and the US Attorney's office into a billling fraud scandal. Up till the time of her illness he had been living for his surgery, his patients, his wife, their cats and their garden. His paradise was a fool's paradise. He had no idea what evil lurked under the Southern California sun. EVEN DOCTORS CRY tells a riveting story of love, death, scandal and a terribly flawed medical system.
