Book excerpt: Learn more about foundational and advanced topics in polymer thin films and coatings besides species with this powerful two-volume resource The two-volume Inorganic and Organic Thin Films: Fundamentals, Fabrication, and Applications delivers a foundational resource for current researchers and commercial users involved in the design and fabrication of thin films. The book offers newcomers to the field a thorough description of new design theory, fabrication methods, and applications of advanced thin films. Readers will discover the physics and chemistry underlying the manufacture of new thin films and coatings in this leading new resource that promises to become a handbook for future applications of the technology. This one-stop reference brings together all important aspects of inorganic and polymeric thin films and coatings, including construction, assembly, deposition, functionality, patterning, and characterization. Explorations of their applications in industries as diverse as information technology, new energy, biomedical engineering, aerospace, and oceanographic engineering round out this fulsome exploration of one of the most exciting and rapidly developing areas of scientific and industrial research today. Readers will also learn from: A comprehensive introduction to the progress of thin films and coatings as well as fundamentals in functional thin films and coatings An exploration of multi-layered magnetic thin films for electron transport control and signal sensing, including giant magnetoresistance, colossal magnetoresistance, tunneling magnetoresistance, and the quantum anomalous Holzer effect An in time summary of high-quality magneto-optics, nanophotonics, spin waves and spintronics using bismuth-substituted iron garnet thin films as examples A thorough discussion of template-assisted fabrication of nanostructure thin films for ultrasensitive detection of chemicals and biomolecules A treatment of biomass derived functional films and coatings Perfect for materials scientists and inorganic chemists, Inorganic and Organic Thin Films will also earn a place in the libraries of solid state physicists and physical chemists working in private industry, as well as polymer and surface chemists who seek to improve their understanding of thin films and coatings.

This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Windsor, Connecticut was one of the three towns that united to form the Colony of Connecticut in the 17th century. A great deal of data concerning Windsor's early inhabitants can be garnered from this work, which is based on records in the possession of the Connecticut Historical Society. By far the largest source transcribed for this publication is the Matthew Grant, or "Old Church," Record, 1639-1681. Comprising the first half of the volume, the Matthew Grant Record consists of several thousand births, marriages, and deaths for Windsor families throughout much of the 17th century. Though not an "official record" of the town, it nonetheless is one of the most important sources of Windsor "vital records" in existence. Various addenda to the Matthew Grant Record are appended to the back of the book. The balance of the volume is made up of a variety of records, each of which has the virtue of placing a particular colonist in Windsor during the 17th or early 18th century, namely: (1) Town Votes, which speak loudly on the methods of town governance and the persons who were assigned to carry out tasks; (2) Lists of Freemen, 1669, 1703; (3) Documents Relating to the Church Controversy of 1669-1679, which affected towns throughout Connecticut; and (4) A Ratable List of Persons and Estates, 1686, representing the second longest record in the volume and disclosing the real and personal property (with the assessed values) for each property owner in town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict between increasing human population and biodiversity conservation is one of the IUCN’s key threatening processes. Conservation planning has received a great deal of coverage and research as a way of conserving biodiversity yet, while theoretically successful, it has never been tested. Simple lines on maps to illustrate conservation areas are unlikely to be successful in the light of human encroachment. It may be that some form of overt display is necessary to ensure the protection of reserves. This may be signage, presence of guards/rangers or physical fencing structures. The need for some form of barrier goes beyond restricting human access. The megafauna of Africa pose a genuine threat to human survival. In southern Africa, fences keep animals in and protect the abutting human population. Elsewhere, fencing is not considered important or viable. Where poverty is rife, it won’t take much to tip the balance from beneficial conservation areas to troublesome repositories of crop-raiders, diseases and killers. Conversely, in New Zealand fences are used to keep animals out. Introduced species have decimated New Zealand’s endemic birds, reptiles and invertebrates, and several sites have been entirely encapsulated in mouse-proof fencing to ensure their protection. Australia faces the same problems as New Zealand, however surrounds its national parks with cattle fences. Foxes and cats are free to enter and leave at will, resulting in rapid recolonisation following poisoning campaigns. How long will these poison campaigns work before tolerance, aversion or resistance evolves in the introduced predator populations?
