Download or read book Measuring the Extent of Gender Segregation in the Labour Market written by William Baah-Boateng and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper makes an attempt to investigate the extent of gender segregation in the Ghanaian labour market using widely used indexes. An assessment of gender differences in the labour market points to a relatively high, but rapidly declining female labour force participation and employment rates in the 1990s as per the GLSS 3&4. The 2000 population census however, puts the employment and participation rate of women marginally below their male counterpart. The market is found to be characterised by higher and increasing unemployment and underemployment rates among women than men and declining female-male earning ratio on account of the concentration of females in low rewarded and less prestigious jobs. A measure of gender segregation however reveals a generally low segregation in the Ghanaian labour market based on distribution of employment by sector, type of employment, occupation and industry. The study nevertheless finds the index as an increasing function of the number of disaggregated groups in the labour force distribution and that the degree of segregation depends on the type of index.

This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes a considerable amount of material to provide a clear structure to a most wide-ranging and complex set of materials concerning female labour in West Papua. This is one of the most innovative and useful books published about the female labour supply in developing countries in recent years. This book provides an empirical analysis of indigenous and non-indigenous female labour and economic development in West Papua. Following a conceptual introduction, which critically examines the theoretical debates of female labour supply and economic development, the book is structured around four key issues of female labour which the author identifies as being the central determinants of female labour force participation and economic development. These key processes are: the women at work and development; determinants of female labour participation; employment patterns of indigenous and non-indigenous women in West Papua; time allocation of employed women and comparison of women’s employment before and after Special Autonomy for West Papua.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unemployment and underemployment are global development challenges. The situation in Ghana is no different. In 2016, it was projected that, given the country’s growing youth population, 300,000 new jobs would need to be created each year to absorb the increasing numbers of unemployed young people. Yet the employment structure of the Ghanaian economy has not changed much from several decades ago. Most jobs are low skill, requiring limited cognitive or technology know-how, reflected in low earnings and work of lower quality. An additional challenge for Ghana is the need to create access to an adequate number of high-quality, productive jobs. This report seeks to increase knowledge about Ghana’s job landscape and youth employment programs to assist policy makers and key stakeholders in identifying ways to improve the effectiveness of these programs and strengthen coordination among major stakeholders. Focused, strategic, short- to medium-term and long-term responses are required to address current unemployment and underemployment challenges. Effective coordination and synergies among youth employment programs are needed to avoid duplication of effort while the country’s economic structure transforms. Effective private sector participation in skills development and employment programs is recommended. The report posits interventions in five priority areas that are not new but could potentially make an impact through scaling up: (1) agriculture and agribusiness, (2) apprenticeship (skills training), (3) entrepreneurship, (4) high-yielding areas (renewable energy†“solar, construction, tourism, sports, and green jobs), and (5) preemployment support services. Finally, with the fast-changing nature of work due to technology and artificial intelligence, Ghana needs to develop an education and training system that is versatile and helps young people to adapt and thrive in the twenty-first century world of work.
Book Synopsis Impact of Remittances on Male and Female Labor Force Participation Patterns in Africa by : Edward Asiedu
Download or read book Impact of Remittances on Male and Female Labor Force Participation Patterns in Africa written by Edward Asiedu and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we examine how remittances, an outcome of labor mobility, affect labor market activities in Ghana using detailed household and individual-level data. This is important, considering the extensive literature that has documented the remittance-poverty reduction nexus. First, we find a strong negative association between household remittance-receiving status and individual labor supply decisions using instrumental variable estimation techniques. Second, we find the depressing effect of remittances on labor supply decisions to be much stronger in rural areas. Rural women who reside in remittance-receiving households are less likely to be in the labor force compared with those who do not reside in such households. Remittances have very little impact on labor supply decisions in urban areas. Our findings support that remittances can exacerbate long-term poverty reduction in rural areas through lower labor force participation, and as such rural-based and gender-based interventions may be needed to help redirect remittance income.
