Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * What is the relevance of feminist ideas for understanding women's experiences of disability? * How can the social model of disability be developed theoretically? * What are the key differences between Disability Studies and medical sociology? In answer to these questions, this book explores and develops ideas about disability, engaging with important debates in disability studies about what disability is and how to theorize it. It also examines the interface between disability studies, women's studies and medical sociology, and offers an accessible review of contemporary debates and theoretical approaches. The title Female Forms reflects two things about the book: first, its use of disabled women's experiences, as told by themselves, to bring a number of themes to life, and second, the author's belief in the importance of feminist ideas and debates for disability studies. The social model of disability is the book's bedrock, but the author both challenges and contributes to social modelist thought. She advances a materialist feminist perspective on disability, producing a book which is of multi-disciplinary relevance. Female Forms will be useful to the growing number of students on Disability Studies courses, as well as those interested in women's studies, medical sociology and social policy. It will also appeal to those studying or working in the health and social care professions such as nursing, social work, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

Book Synopsis Patterns in the Production of Paestan Red-Figure Pottery by : Edward Herring
Download or read book Patterns in the Production of Paestan Red-Figure Pottery written by Edward Herring and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the previous scholarship on Paestan red-figure pottery has focused on the cataloguing of collections, the attribution of vases to painters and workshops, iconographic and stylistic matters, and individual vessels and vase forms. This partly reflects the history of vase-painting scholarship, which grew out of antiquarian collecting during 18th and 19th centuries, and partly the fact that a full archaeological provenance is not preserved for the majority of vessels. This book uses a database containing in excess of 1,800 vessels and fragments to identify patterns in the production and decoration of Paestan vases that cast light on the choices made by vase-producers and the preferences of their customers. It considers the popularity of different vessel shapes over time, the use of highly generic decorative scenes, which are characteristic of Paestan red-figure, as well as the popularity of scenes of myth, images of the gods, and scenes of nude and half-draped women. Paestan red-figure is compared with the vessels decorated in Applied Red produced at the same site. A comparison is also made between the output of the Paestan red-figure industry and that of Apulia. As the majority of the vases in the sample derive from tombs, the patterns identified provide insights into the ways in which the ancient populations of Paestum and South-West Italy commemorated the dead.

Book Synopsis Language, Cognition and Gender by : Alan Garnham
Download or read book Language, Cognition and Gender written by Alan Garnham and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender inequality remains an issue of high relevance, and controversy, in society. Previous research shows that language contributes to gender inequality in various ways: Gender-related information is transmitted through formal and semantic features of language, such as the grammatical category of gender, through gender-related connotations of role names (e.g., manager, secretary), and through customs of denoting social groups with derogatory vs. neutral names. Both as a formal system and as a means of communication, language passively reflects culture-specific social conditions. In active use it can also be used to express and, potentially, perpetuate those conditions. The questions addressed in the contributions to this Frontiers Special Topic include: • how languages shape the cognitive representations of gender • how features of languages correspond with gender equality in different societies • how language contributes to social behaviour towards the sexes • how gender equality can be promoted through strategies for gender-fair language use These questions are explored both developmentally (across the life span from childhood to old age) and in adults. The contributions present work conducted across a wide range of languages, including some studies that make cross-linguistic comparisons. Among the contributors are both cognitive and social psychologists and linguists, all with an excellent research standing. The studies employ a wide range of empirical methods: from surveys to electro-physiology. The papers in the Special Topic present a wide range of complimentary studies, which will make a substantial contribution to understanding in this important area.
