Book excerpt: A gifted poet, a women's rights activist, and an expert on moral and natural philosophy, Lucrezia Marinella (1571-1653) was known throughout Italy as the leading female intellectual of her age. Born into a family of Venetian physicians, she was encouraged to study, and, fortunately, she did not share the fate of many of her female contemporaries, who were forced to join convents or were pressured to marry early. Marinella enjoyed a long literary career, writing mainly religious, epic, and pastoral poetry, and biographies of famous women in both verse and prose. Marinella's masterpiece, The Nobility and Excellence of Women, and the Defects and Vices of Men was first published in 1600, composed at a furious pace in answer to Giusepe Passi's diatribe about women's alleged defects. This polemic displays Marinella's vast knowledge of the Italian poetic tradition and demonstrates her ability to argue against authors of the misogynist tradition from Boccaccio to Torquato Tasso. Trying to effect real social change, Marinella argued that morally, intellectually, and in many other ways, women are superior to men.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of moral and practical advice addressed to young women, written by an anonymous author who identifies herself only as 'a mother'. The book covers a wide range of topics, such as self-esteem, marriage, motherhood, domestic management, and religious devotion. The tone is encouraging and instructive, and the advice is based on traditional gender roles and Christian values. The book is a fascinating glimpse into the social and cultural norms of the early 19th century, and a valuable source for gender studies and cultural history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to recent data on women leaders across all major sectors in the United States, women are outperforming men but earning less and still hitting the glass ceiling. This book uncovers the best practices to remedy these inequities, optimize performance, and benefit both genders. In compiling and analyzing 2011–2012 data on women leaders across all major sectors in the United States, author Tiffani Lennon, JD, uncovered proof that women are outperforming men—yet salaries and positional leadership roles are disproportionate to the performance and accomplishments of women in nearly all sectors. Recognizing Women's Leadership: Strategies and Best Practices for Employing Excellence presents a comprehensive look at agencies and organizations with the smallest pay gap and the largest percentage of female positional leaders to reveal best practices and strategies that ensure gender parity and optimal business performance, including impact, revenue, and efficacy. The study examined in this book included approximately 1,500 for-profit companies, not-for-profit businesses, and other organizations and associations throughout the country to establish the number of women leaders among the top echelon in each industry. Researchers also calculated leadership performance by identifying the frequency with which women received industry distinctions and awards, were top revenue generators, and achieved best-sellers list status, among other sector-specific criteria. The ramifications of the study's findings portend the future of the United States as a global competitor and as such need to be part of the public discourse surrounding the state of the American economy.

Book excerpt: The works of Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) ranged from the early Thoughts on the Education of Daughters to The Female Reader, a selection of texts for girls, and included two novels. But her reputation is founded on A Vindication of the Rights of Woman of 1792. This treatise is the first great document of feminism—and is now accepted as a core text in western tradition. It is not widely known that the germ of Wollstonecraft’s great work came out of an earlier and much shorter vindication—A Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790), written in the context of the issues raised by the French Revolution. This edition, which follows the model of other Broadview Editions in including a range of materials that help the reader to see the work in the context of its era out of which it emerged, is arranged chronologically, opening with Wollstonecraft’s “other vindication.” It also includes a wide range of other documents in appendices, as well as a comprehensive and authoritative introduction, chronology, and full index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in Currency paperback -- Sally Helgesen's classic study of female leaders and how their strategies represent a highly successful revision of male leadership styles. Sixty thousand copies in print! In her bestselling 1990 book, Sally Helgesen discovered that men and women approach work in fundamentally different ways. Many of these differences hold distinct advantages for women, who excel at running organizations that foster creativity, cooperation, and intuitive decision-making power, necessities for companies of the twenty-first century. Helgesen's findings reveal that organizations run by women do not take the form of the traditional hierarchical pyranaid, but more closely resemble a web, where leaders reach out, not down, to form an interrelating matrix built around a central purpose. The strategy of the web concentrates power at the center by drawing others closer and by creating communities where information sharing is essential. She presents her findings through unique, closely detailed accounts of four successful women business leaders -- Frances Hesselbein of Girl Scouts USA, Barbara Grogan of Western Industrial Contractors, Nancy Badore of Ford Motor Company's Executive Development Center, and Dorothy Brunson of Brunson Communications. Helgesen observes their meetings, listens to their phone calls and conferences, and reads their correspondence. Her "diary studies" document how women leaders make decisions, schedule their days, gather and disperse information, motivate others, delegate tasks, structure their companies, hire, and fire. She chronicles how their experiences as women -- wives, mothers, friends, sisters, daughters -- contribute to their leadership style.
