Book excerpt: In recent years, many Nordic architects have returned to the materials used by their modernist forbearers (Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Jørn Utzon)--materials such as brick, pine, granite and concrete--developing a new regionialist idiom for Norway that has garnered much acclaim around the world. New Nordic Architecture & Identity offers a critical exploration of the current global interest in Nordic-ness, attempting to determine whether certain special "Nordic" features recur in architecture, and whether this involves a fundamental formal idiom that is regularly reinterpreted. Is there a Nordic architectural identity? And if so, how has this Nordic identity developed in relation to the rest of the world? This volume looks at buildings by Snøhetta, Jarmund/Vignaes, Lassila Hirvilammi, Johan Celsing, Lundgaard & Tranberg, Bjarke Ingels Group and Studio Granda, highlighting their new uses of "traditional" Nordic materials.

Book Synopsis Organic Design in Twentieth-Century Nordic Architecture by : Erik Champion
Download or read book Organic Design in Twentieth-Century Nordic Architecture written by Erik Champion and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Design in Twentieth-Century Nordic Architecture presents a communicable and useful definition of organic architecture that reaches beyond constraints. The book focuses on the works and writings of architects in Nordic countries, such as Sigurd Lewerentz, Jørn Utzon, Sverre Fehn and the Aaltos (Aino, Elissa and Alvar), among others. It is structured around the ideas of organic design principles that influenced them and allowed their work to evolve from one building to another. Erik Champion argues organic architecture can be viewed as a concerted attempt to thematically unify the built environment through the allegorical expression of ongoing interaction between designer, architectural brief and building-as-process. With over 140 black and white images, this book is an intriguing read for architecture students and professionals alike.

Book Synopsis Nightlands by : Christian Norberg-Schulz
Download or read book Nightlands written by Christian Norberg-Schulz and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997-07-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated by Thomas McQuillan Architecture is a manifestation of the environment in which it is placed, observes distinguished architect and theoretician Christian Norberg-Schulz. A simple enough observation, but one that becomes subtle and nuanced in this landmark book which attempts to define, for the first time, what Nordic building really is. Norberg-Schulz begins by contrasting the natural world of the North with that of the Mediterranean, the Nordic unendingness against the sun-saturated and homogeneous South. Using themes such as "natural," "domestic," "universal," and "foreign," he finds the architecture of both regions sensibly related to their environments; but whereas the South lends itself to abstraction, the North is marked by variation, openness, and dynamism—by low light, forests, and space. Exploring the ways built experience "takes place," Norberg-Schulz charts the distinctive character of land and climate that distinguishes Denmark's, Sweden's, Finland's, and Norway's architectural traditions from each other and from those to the South. While each of these countries might be said to share regional traits, Norberg-Schulz identifies differences (the cultivated and closely detailed landscape and architecture of Denmark, the dramatic, structured forms of Norway) that allow him to account for the way individual Nordic architectures evolved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scandinavian design is a movement characterised by simplicity, minimalism and functionality that emerged in the early 20th century, and subsequently flourished in the 1950s throughout the five Nordic countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. Scandinavian designers are known especially for household goods including furniture, textiles, ceramics, lamps, and glass, but Scandinavian design has been extended to be an influential movement in architecture and industrial design. High On...Scandinavian Architects presents twenty-eight architects from Scandinavia with their latest projects from the areas of residential, commercial and public buildings. Whether large or small, sharp-edged or soft, coarse or fine, the architecture depicted in this volume is characterised by the iconoclastic flair of Scandinavia"--Publisher's description.
