Book excerpt: In the second part of the research, Sol-gel derived activated alumina, supercritical carbon dioxide dried sol-gel derived activated alumina, and iron-aluminium hydrous oxides were synthesized to study the adsorption equilibrium and kinetics of arsenic removal. The main application of this study is to remove arsenic at very low concentrations from drinking water. The adsorbents were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption for their surface and pore texture properties. The iron-aluminium hydrous oxide adsorbent was independent of the initial pH of the solution for arsenic removal. Adsorption isotherm arsenic onto sol-gel derived activated alumina is explained by the Freundlich adsorption model and the Langmuir adsorption model best explains the adsorption isotherm of arsenic onto supercritical CO2 dried sol-gel derived activated alumina and iron-aluminium hydrous oxides. Supercritical CO2 dried sol-gel derived activated alumina showed the highest adsorption capacity of 8.99 mg/g. A pseudo-second order model is used to explain adsorption reaction kinetics of arsenic onto the adsorbents and the pseudo-second order model fits the experimental data very well with a R2 value greater than 0.99.

Book excerpt: In many regions of the world, groundwater is contaminated with a high level of arsenic that must be treated before it can be safely used as drinking water. In situ immobilization of arsenic from groundwater within subsurface environment could have major advantages over the conventional above-ground chemical coagulation-precipitation treatment process. In this study, we develop a novel technique that can in situ emplace iron oxides onto the sand grain surface of porous media under mild chemical and temperature conditions. The technique involves sequential injections of a preconditioned ferrous iron solution and an oxidant solution and then orchestrate the advective-diffusive transport of the two reagents in porous media to create an overlapped reaction zone where ferrous iron is oxidized and precipitated on the sand grain surfaces. We demonstrate through bench-scale column tests the feasibility of using this technique to create a large-scale iron oxide-enriched reactive barrier in subsurface environment for in situ removal of arsenic. A sand filter with a fresh iron oxide coating can treat thousands of pore volumes of water contaminated with dozens of ppb arsenic before the coating needs to be regenerated. Arsenic breakthrough curves through the sand filter suggest that both reversible adsorption and irreversible precipitation are responsible for removing arsenic from the water. Unlike conventional excavate-and-fill permeable reactive barriers, the treatment capacity of our in situ created barrier can be in situ regenerated and replenished with a fresh coating.

The average difference between model calculation results (shown in this work) and experimental results from three experimental studies is less than 5%. Additionally, based on the improved model correlation provided by the bidentate assumption, there is a strong case for the main surface complexes between arsenic and Fe-sand being bidentate complexes.

Thus many methods of arsenic removal have been discussed. The search for low-cost technologies has directed towards bentonite deposits of Rajmahal hills. Bentonite minerals are smectite group of mineral having 2:1 dioctahedral structure. Though these minerals are abundant inmost of the countries of the world, Rajmahal hill bentonites have not been studied for many of its important properties as yet. Our research team have collected bentonite minerals from different parts of the hill and worked on removal of heavy metals, dyes and arsenic from aqueous medium. Efforts have been made to use different derivatives of bentonite minerals for remediation of heavy metals including arsenic. A comparative study of remediation potential has been done. All the useful experimental data have been incorporated in the book to have a clear understanding of the subject. Apart from this, the ability of agricultural solid wastes e.g maize stem powder, rice husk have also been tested for removal of arsenic inaqueous medium. In addition, researches have focused on the ability of biological materials to accumulate the toxicants. The major advantages of biosorption are low-cost, high efficiency and minimum use of chemicals. Latest techniques of analyses of arsenic both qualitative and quantitative have been discussed in the book. Analysis of arsenic has also been done by I.C.P and A.A.S. Possible causes of arsenic contamination in ground water, geochemistry and mechanism of entry in the Gangetic plain have also been discussed to make readers understand in the simplest manner. This research aimed to develop a technique that could facilitate in situ oxidative precipitation of Fe3+ in a soil (sand) media for generating a subsurface iron oxide-based reactive barrier that could immobilize arsenic (As) and other dissolved metals in groundwater. A simple in situ arsenic treatment process was successfully developed for treating contaminated rural groundwater using iron oxide-coated sand (IOCS). Using imbibition flow, the system facilitated the dispersive transport of ferrous iron (Fe2+) and oxidant solutions in porous sand to generate an overlaying blanket where the Fe2+ was oxidized and precipitated onto the surface as ferric oxide. The iron oxide (FeOx) emplacement process was significantly affected by (1) the initial surface area and surface-bound iron content of the sand, (2) the pH and solubility of the coating reagents, (3) the stability of the oxidant solution, and (4) the chemical injection schedule. In contrast to conventional excavate-and-fill treatment technologies, this technique could be used to in situ replace a fresh iron oxide blanket on the sand and rejuvenate its treatment capacity for additional arsenic removal. Several bench-scale experiments revealed that the resultant IOCS could treat arsenic-laden groundwater for extended periods of time before approaching its effective life cycle. The adsorption capacity for As(III) and As(V) was influenced by (1) the amount of iron oxide accumulated on the sand surface, (2) the system pH, and (3) competition for adsorption sites from other groundwater constituents such as silicon (Si) and total dissolved solids (TDS). Although the IOCS could be replenished several times before exhaustion, the life cycle of the FeOx reactive barrier may be limited by the gradual loss of hydraulic conductivity induced by the imminent reduction of pore space over time.

In the present study, mixed maghemite-magnetite nanoparticles have been used as adsorbents for Cr(VI), As and Cd(II) removal. From the study, it is apparent that the removal of Cr(VI), Cd(II) and As(V) by mixed iron oxide nanoparticles depends on pH, temperature, contact time, solid/liquid ratio and initial concentration of heavy metals. The results showed that Cr(VI) adsorption on mixed maghemite-magnetite was dependent on solution pH between 3 and 6. Theoretical multiplet analyses in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study showed that during Cr adsorption, the amount of maghemite increased from 70 to 89%. Fe(II) was transformed into Fe(III) by the redox reaction and Cr(VI) species were reduced to Cr(III) species. In arsenic removal study, it was found that the percent of maghemite also increased for As(V) and As(III) adsorption. At the same time, the percentage of magnetite was reduced for both cases. Thus, a redox reaction occurred on the mixed magnetite-magheamite surface when arsenic was introduced. In cadmium removal study, adsorption capacity of mixed magh emite- magnetite for Cd(II) ions increased with an increase in the pH of the adsorbate solution. The results showed that 0.8 g/L of 20-60 nm maghemite-magnetite particles removed up to 1.5 mg/L Cd. The XPS surveys confirmed that As, Cr(VI) and Cd(II) ions may undergo oxidation-reduction reactions upon exposure to mixed maghemite-magnetite, or may be fixed by complexation to the oxygen atoms in the oxyhydroxy groups. The investigation of transport and chemical states analysis during a rsenic removal by monolith slag from nickel smelting revealed that slag was efficient in arsenic removal, attaining equilibrium sorption capacities in the range of 1000-1054 g/g for an initial arsenic concentration of C 0 = 10 mg/L. Column studies showed the sorption of arsenic by smelter slag (a waste material) was complex and involved both c hemisorption and physical sorption. Sorption capacities for As(V) were significantly higher for Ni smelter slag. Raman spectroscopy and XPS results demonstrate that the As reacted with a large proportion of the slag in the experiment. Thus, further investigation woul d be necessary to evaluate the applicability of mixed iron oxide loaded particles for subsurface remediation at field scale.

In this study, the extended triple layer model (ETLM), a surface complexation model consistent with spectroscopic and theoretical molecular evidence, was first systematically tested for its capability to predict arsenic adsorption on a common goethite-based granular porous adsorptive media (Bayoxide E33®) under wide range of solution conditions. Adsorption equilibrium constants of arsenate, phosphate, and carbonate were determined in single-solute systems, and these constants were used to predict competitive interactions of those ions in dual-solute systems. The ETLM successfully predicted the competitive interactions using the adsorption equilibrium constants determined in single-solute systems. The arsenate (As(V)) removal performance of a fixed-bed adsorber packed with a goethite-based adsorbent was also systematically studied at different pH, initial arsenate concentration, and empty bed contact time (ECBT) in the absence and presence of competing ions (silicate, phosphate, and vanadate). Rapid small scale column tests (RSSCTs) were extensively conducted with synthetic waters in which water quality was controlled within the environmentally relevant range. The column study quantitatively elucidates influence of water quality and operating conditions on arsenate removal by fixed-bed iron oxide adsorber. Iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using the inverse flame synthesis method to develop a novel adsorbent that has higher adsorption capacity than commonly used commercial adsorbents. The iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized and fabricated using the different inverse flame conditions. The developed iron oxide nanoparticle has much higher adsorption capacity than a widely-used commercial adsorbent, Bayoxide E33. Since the inverse flame synthesis is a cost effective and suitable for large production, it can be used to synthesis adsorbent for potable water treatment or environmental remediation.

Book excerpt: The Congress "Arsenic in the Environment" offers an international, multi- and interdisciplinary discussion platform for research and innovation aimed towards a holistic solution to the problem posed by the environmental toxin arsenic, with considerable societal impact. The congress has focused on cutting edge and breakthrough research in physical, chemical, toxicological, medical, agricultural and other specific issues on arsenic across a broader environmental realm. The Congress "Arsenic in the Environment" was first organized in Mexico City (As2006) followed by As2008 in Valencia, Spain, As2010 in Tainan, Taiwan, As2012 in Cairns, Australia and As2014 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 6th International Congress As2016 was held June 19-23, 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden and was entitled Arsenic Research and Global Sustainability. The Congress addressed the broader context of arsenic research along the following themes: Theme 1: Arsenic in Environmental Matrices and Interactions (Air, Water, Soil and Biological Matrices) Theme 2: Arsenic in Food Chain Theme 3: Arsenic and Health Theme 4: Clean Water Technology for Control of Arsenic Theme 5: Societal issues, Policy Studies, Mitigation and Management Long term exposure to low-to-medium levels of arsenic via contaminated food and drinking water can have a serious impact on human health and globally, more than 100 million people are at risk. Since the end of the 20th century, arsenic in drinking water (mainly groundwater) has emerged as a global health concern. In the past decade, the presence of arsenic in plant foods – especially rice – has gained increasing attention. In the Nordic countries in particular, the use of water-soluble inorganic arsenic chemicals (e.g. chromated copper arsenate, CCA) as wood preservatives and the mining of sulfidic ores have been flagged as health concern. The issue has been accentuated by discoveries of naturally occurring arsenic in groundwater, primarily in the private wells, in parts of the Fennoscandian Shield and in sedimentary formations, with potentially detrimental effects on public health. Sweden has been at the forefront of research on the health effects of arsenic, technological solutions for arsenic removal, and sustainable mitigation measures for developing countries. Hosting this Congress in Sweden was also relevant because historically Sweden has been one of the leading producer of As2O3 and its emission from the smelting industries in northern Sweden and has successfully implemented actions to reduce the industrial emissions of arsenic as well as minimizing the use of materials and products containing arsenic in since 1977. The Congress has gathered professionals involved in different segments of interdisciplinary research in an open forum, and strengthened relations between academia, industry, research laboratories, government agencies and the private sector to share an optimal atmosphere for exchange of knowledge, discoveries and discussions about the problem of arsenic in the environment and catalyze the knowledge generation and innovations at a policy context to achieve the goals for post 2015 Sustainable Development.
