In bookstores today you can find thousands of books about Rangers, SEALs, and Special Forces in combat. But if you're a regular guy, and you want to know what it's like to be a regular guy at war, read this book. No, there won't be any stories of super soldiers armed only with tomahawks HALO jumping from stealth fighters into an NVA base camp. But you will learn what it's like to be scared to death in a perimeter bunker, holding an impotent rifle and wondering, "What the hell am I doing here?" For a true, first-hand story of what it was like for the "support soldiers" in Nam, this book keeps you turning the pages.
Book Synopsis The Perfect Weapon by : David E. Sanger
Download or read book The Perfect Weapon written by David E. Sanger and published by Crown. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOW AN HBO® DOCUMENTARY FROM AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR JOHN MAGGIO • “An important—and deeply sobering—new book about cyberwarfare” (Nicholas Kristof, New York Times), now updated with a new chapter. The Perfect Weapon is the startling inside story of how the rise of cyberweapons transformed geopolitics like nothing since the invention of the atomic bomb. Cheap to acquire, easy to deny, and usable for a variety of malicious purposes, cyber is now the weapon of choice for democracies, dictators, and terrorists. Two presidents—Bush and Obama—drew first blood with Operation Olympic Games, which used malicious code to blow up Iran’s nuclear centrifuges, and yet America proved remarkably unprepared when its own weapons were stolen from its arsenal and, during President Trump’s first year, turned back on the United States and its allies. And if Obama would begin his presidency by helping to launch the new era of cyberwar, he would end it struggling unsuccessfully to defend the 2016 U.S. election from interference by Russia, with Vladimir Putin drawing on the same playbook he used to destabilize Ukraine. Moving from the White House Situation Room to the dens of Chinese government hackers to the boardrooms of Silicon Valley, New York Times national security correspondent David Sanger reveals a world coming face-to-face with the perils of technological revolution, where everyone is a target. “Timely and bracing . . . With the deep knowledge and bright clarity that have long characterized his work, Sanger recounts the cunning and dangerous development of cyberspace into the global battlefield of the twenty-first century.”—Washington Post

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of America’s most beloved storytellers, Louis L’Amour’s vibrant tales of adventure bring the American West to life. Now, in this sixth volume of collected short stories, L’Amour takes us beyond the frontier with thirty-three gripping stories of crime, sports, and the murky world where the two often meet. From suspenseful whodunits to rueful tales of fortunes gained and lost, this remarkable collection will enthrall and entertain L’Amour fans old and new. Traversing a vivid landscape, from sunblasted hills and canyons to the nighttime streets of America’s greatest cities, some of Louis L’Amour’s most compelling fiction was set in his own time—whether in the naked electric glare of boxing rings where men go head-to-head with their dreams and demons in an underworld rife with corruption, or along freight docks where laborers toil to earn just enough to get by, or in the penthouses of the rich and arrogant who calculate the odds of how to get even more. Here are tales of innocents caught in the schemes of criminals, detectives hunting down truths that hide more lies, gamblers and beauties, wiseguys and cops. Here is a world populated by the kinds of people who risk their lives to right a wrong, make a buck, or save a friend. A war veteran makes a journey to visit the man who saved his life in Korea. Instead he uncovers a killing and finds his own heroic cause…. Confronted with an easy chance to steal, an honest man gives in to temptation—and finds himself ensnared in a web of blackmail and violence…. An elderly Hawaiian seafarer is found dead with a hand-carved figure beside his body. Unraveling his murder will mean solving the mystery of a shipwreck—and of the forces that drive some to take fatal chances and others to kill. Brimming with thought-provoking characters and situations—from a man who awakens from unconsciousness to find a fortune in a burning house to a man who meets a killer who is supposed to be dead in a seedy diner—these thrilling, atmospheric stories course with authenticity and bear the mark of a timeless master.

Download or read book Urban Animals written by Tora Holmberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city includes opportunities as well as constraints for humans and other animals alike. Urban animals are often subjected to complaints; they transgress geographical, legal as and cultural ordering systems, while roaming the city in what is often perceived as uncontrolled ways. But they are also objects of care, conservation practices and bio-political interventions. What then, are the "more-than-human" experiences of living in a city? What does it mean to consider spatial formations and urban politics from the perspective of human/animal relations? This book draws on a number of case studies to explore urban controversies around human/animal relations, in particular companion animals: free ranging dogs, homeless and feral cats, urban animal hoarding and "crazy cat ladies". The book explores ‘zoocities’, the theoretical framework in which animal studies meet urban studies, resulting in a reframing of urban relations and space. Through the expansion of urban theories beyond the human, and the resuscitation of sociological theories through animal studies literature, the book seeks to uncover the phenomenon of ‘humanimal crowding’, both as threats to be policed, and as potentially subversive. In this book, a number of urban controversies and crowding technologies are analysed, finally pointing at alternative modes of trans-species urban politics through the promises of humanimal crowding - of proximity and collective agency. The exclusion of animals may be an urban ideology, aiming at social order, but close attention to the level of practice reveals a much more diverse, disordered, and perhaps disturbing experience.
Book Synopsis A Beautiful Agony by : Joseph P. Policape
Download or read book A Beautiful Agony written by Joseph P. Policape and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book that unfolds the history of the world’s first black republic through the art of poetry. Yes, the first black republic on Earth started in the Americas! Beautiful Agony is a collection of poetic snapshots of the heroes and heroines who made Haiti possible as a nation and trekked the eternal struggle to keep Haiti’s freedom soul. Do you love poetry? Do you love wordplay? Do you love sophisticated prose? Then Beautiful Agony: Visionaries and Freedom Fighters in Haitian History is for you. These poems serve a double mission: personal pleasure and historical recognition of people and a land and the impressive odds against its existence and the triumphant glow of its survival. When Haiti came into existence, the fight was an extremely difficult one, and Haiti’s enemies were the world’s greatest powers at that time. The improbable but hard-won victory of the slaves against France’s powerful Napoleon and his cohorts was an extraordinary achievement for my little island. This book is for everyone who loves freedom, whether poet lovers, teachers, social workers, ministers, scholars, activists, lawyers, politicians, musicians, psychologists, youth, or parents. It will give you hope that nothing is impossible after witnessing the experience of the improbable hunger and spirit of those who were forced into existence a new nation of former slaves and free blacks. Beautiful Agony is a testament to the creative will and humanity of Haiti’s freedom and agony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From April 17 to May 2, 1863, one of the most daring Union actions took place as a diversion to Grant's Vicksburg campaign. A cavalry force of 1,700 men under Colonel Benjamin Grierson rode six hundred miles through Rebel territory to tear up railroads, free slaves, and destroy Confederate supplies as special forces. The raiders seemed unstoppable and caused great damage, inflicting many times the casualties on the enemy as were inflicted upon themselves. This is the story of that guerrilla raid, by those who were there and verified by Grierson. This book also tells the story of the scout, Chickasaw, a southerner loyal to the Union who risked his life to help the Federal troops.
