Book excerpt: According to Florida Law, students must pass the Grade 10 FCAT, among other academic requirements, in order to receive a standard high school diploma. Specifically, students must achieve a "passing" score of 300 or above on both the FCAT SSS Reading and the FCAT SSS Mathematics tests. Technically, students can retake the FCAT as many times as they want, until they pass it, and can even enroll for a "free" 13th year of public education should they need additional instruction to successfully pass the FCAT. At the time of this study, students had up to seven standard opportunities to pass the Grade 10 FCAT prior to graduation. Students who did not pass the FCAT in the spring of their sophomore year could retest in the fall, spring, and summer of their junior and senior years. The purpose of this study is to report the results of tracking the FCAT retake occurrences and outcomes for one grade-level cohort group as they advance through their M-DCPS careers. Although summaries of the test results for any retake occasion across all current test-takers have been available on a yearly basis, this is the first cumulative tracking for FCAT retake performance.

Book excerpt: The authors bring you in this edited volume a collection of essays that address the relationship between racial violence, media, the criminal justice system, and education. This book is unique in that it brings together the perspectives of university professors, artists, poets, community activists, classroom teachers, and legal experts. With the Trayvon Martin murder and legal proceedings at the center of reflection and analysis, authors poignantly provide insight into how racial violence is institutionalized and consumed by the mass public. Authors borrow from educational theory, history, gender studies, sociology, cultural studies, the arts, legal scholarship, and personal reflection to begin the dialogue on how to move toward education for racial and social justice. The book is recommended for secondary educators, community organizers, undergraduate and graduate social science and education courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So, the other day, I was talking with Ashley toward the end of class and mentioned she’d been absent a lot, so I asked if she had been ill. She said, “No. We’ve been getting the place ready for my parents. They’re coming home.” “Really?” I was a bit puzzled. “Yeah,” she said, “I pick dad up from prison on Monday and mom on Wednesday.” When a kid walks into class, he or she is carrying baggage. This is the reality: The most important thing for teachers to teach kids is that learning is fun and that they can do it. If they don’t learn this, it doesn’t matter what else is taught. Someone Else’s Problem just walked in your classroom (With apologies to Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy). They don’t cover this kind of thing in education classes in college, and they also don’t tell you about students coming to school hungry for food or love. To assume that your job as a teacher is just to teach subject matter is like a blind man describing an elephant. The Elephant in the Classroom was walking the halls of Columbine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid changing economic and social contexts, radical changes have occurred in public higher education policies over the past three decades. Public Policy and Higher Educationprovides readers with new ways to analyze these complex state policies and offers the tools to examine how policies affect students’ access and success in college. Rather than arguing for a single approach, the authors examine how policymakers and higher education administrators can work to inform and influence change within systems of higher education using research-based evidence along with consideration of political and historical values and beliefs. Special Features: Case Studies—allow readers to examine strategies used by different types of colleges to improve access and retention. Reflective Exercises—encourage readers to discuss state and campus context for policy decisions and to think about the strategies used in a state or institution. Approachable Explanations—unpack complex public policies and financial strategies for readers who seek understanding of public policy in higher education. Research-Based Recommendations—explore how policymakers, higher education administrators and faculty can work together to improve quality, diversity, and financial stewardship. This textbook is an invaluable resource for graduate students, administrators, policymakers, and researchers who seek to learn more about the crucial contexts underlying policy decisions and college access.
