Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1981, Howard Gayle was summoned from the substitutes’ bench and sent on to play for Liverpool in the second leg of a European Cup semi-final at German champions Bayern Munich. The previous October, by filling the same role at Manchester City, he became the first black footballer in Liverpool’s 89-year history to play at first team level. Gayle’s Liverpool career proved to be short. He would pull on the red shirt only five times in total, scoring once. Yet he is remembered as a trailblazer. In 61 Minutes in Munich, Gayle takes you inside his life: bringing the shutters down on a childhood spent between Toxteth and Norris Green, two contrasting areas of Liverpool. He details life on the streets, the racism, the other forms of abuse, of which he has only told a handful of people before, and his ascent from teenage football hooligan to a player with Europe’s leading club. Gayle explains what it was like to be a black man with a profound sense of insecurity inside a Liverpool dressing room at the most successful point in the club’s history, a place where only the strongest survived. In Munich, Gayle ran Bayern’s defenders ragged and is credited by many as the catalyst for Liverpool’s progression to the final. And yet, by being substituted after 61 minutes on the pitch, he reveals his dismay at never being trusted to keep his cool in the most tense of environments. Gayle takes you to Newcastle, to Birmingham City, to Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers. He takes you back his modest home in the south end of Liverpool where it all began. Part social-history, part-autobiography, 61 Minutes in Munich is an exposition of life in the city of Liverpool during one of the most turbulent periods in its history. Above all it examines how a pioneer like Gayle has been up against it from the moment he was born.

Book excerpt: Due to the necessity of having to spend the Coronavirus pandemic in self-isolation, the artist Max Siedentopf turned his own home upside down and captured the results with his camera. He piled cans into sculptural towers, stitched together haute-couture clothes, crafted monsters and traps, and invented crazy alternatives to toilet paper. But that wasn't all: he also published all of his actions on Instagram and invited followers around the world to copy his various mottos. This handy survival guide consists of different chapters that shed an ironic light upon the process of getting by at home alone, whether one has chosen to isolate or has been ordered to. From "invent a new meal," to "make a painting using toothbrush," to "balance all your beauty products," it's all there. The best pictures from the series, which now numbers more than one thousand photos, are collected here. An effective way to combat boredom whenever. MAX SIEDENTOPF (*1991 in Windhoek, Namibia)—artist, photographer, video director, freelance art director—was the creative director for the KesselsKramer agency from 2013 to 2020. He is the founder of the quarterly art magazine Ordinary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having started out as a potential magazine/blog article, Red Odyssey is a thirty-six year project in the making, charting the author's relationship with Germany's biggest and most well-known football team, FC Bayern Mnchen. Having fallen in love with FC Bayern in 1981 as a nine year old, the author charts the events season by season. During the 1980s, FC Bayern were flying high in Germany but victim of painful European Cup final defeats in 1982 and 1987. Meanwhile the author, one of the few supporters of the Bavarian club in the United Kingdom, was performing late-night television-watching escapades at boarding school in order to catch five minutes of potted highlights. Being an FC Bayern fan in the late 1980s and early 1990s was far from a glory hunt, and all of the pain as well as the glory is covered in equal depth with no emotions spared. The solid 1980s were followed by the painful nadir of the early 1990s, with names like Norwich City, BK 1903 Copenhagen and SpVgg Vestenbergsgreuth appearing like ghosts from a dark and horrible past. Then would come the agonising Champions League defeat against Manchester United in 1999. As fans of the club will already know and readers less familiar with the subject will discover, FC Bayern have almost made a habit of fighting back to overcome the pain. Two years after that last-gasp defeat in Barcelona, they would exact the perfect revenge on both United and their other old rivals Real Madrid before claiming that title in a dramatic penalty shootout against Valencia in Milan's San Siro. It was the final chapter in a dramatic season that had also seen them clinch the Bundesliga title in dramatic circumstances, leaving fans of rivals Schalke 04 shedding blue and bitter tears. As FC Bayern developed as a growing international brand and the German game became more popular outside its homeland following the massive development of satellite television, it became a lot easier to watch FC Bayern play. The dark days of scratching for brief highlights were all but forgotten, with almost every match available live. The Champions League triumph in 2001 was not to be the beginning of a new era of continental dominance for FC Bayern, and the club and its supporters would have to wait over a decade for its next victory in Europe's premier club competition - but when it came, it was a moment of history as the club claimed their first-ever treble. By now FC Bayern were being lauded as the best football team in the world, a team up there with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the battle for continental dominance. Red Odyssey has been written by an FC Bayern fan for FC Bayern fans, but there is plenty for everybody else who has a love for German football.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three extraordinary seasons at Bayern Munich, Martin Perarnau was given total access around the German super club – to its players, its backroom staff, its board members and, above all, to its manager, Pep Guardiola. In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed account of Guardiola's first full season at Bayern, Pep Confidential, Perarnau now lifts the lid on the Catalan's whole tenure in Bavaria. Pep Guardiola: The Evolution takes the reader on a journey through three action packed seasons as Bayern smashed domestic records yet struggled to emulate that dominance in Europe, analysing Guardiola's management style through key moments on and off the field. Perarnau reveals how Guardiola improved as a manager at Bayern despite failing to land the ultimate prize in European football, examines his decision to leave Germany to take up the challenge at Manchester City and how his managerial style will continue to evolve in the Premier League. This is more than the story of three seasons with one of the biggest clubs in the game. It is a portrait and analysis of a manager and the footballing philosophies that have beguiled the world.

Book excerpt: The first definitive insider biography of the new Manchester United manager So who is Louis van Gaal? An inflexible ex-PE teacher who only knows how to act like a dictator, or a soccer visionary that has made him one of the greatest ever European managers? Wherever he has gone, van Gaal has been accused of being a domineering disciplinarian and a control freak. He is certainly, by his own admission, a man who leaves nothing to chance. A disciple in the 1970s of Rinus Michels’ Total Football philosophy, he is a fascinating contradiction—an ultra-individualist utterly devoted to the collective effort. He believes in the team over the individual, in always having a plan, and a team prepared to follow that plan. Van Gaal led the young Ajax team he molded to Champions League glory in 1995, went on to win titles across Europe with Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar, and Bayern Munich, and is currently in his second stint as national coach of Holland. It is a career that has never been short on color and drama—from fallouts with players to rants at the media wherever he has managed. Dutch soccer commentator Maarten Meijer’s has written the definitive biography of van Gaal—both the man and his methods. It offers the best psychological insight so far—from his earliest roots to his greatest triumphs—into the man given the task of returning the glory days to Manchester United.

Book excerpt: This multivolume set is much more than a collection of essays on sports and sporting cultures from around the world: it also details how and why sports are played wherever they exist, and examines key charismatic athletes from around the world who have transcended their sports. Sports Around the World: History, Culture, and Practice provides a unique, global overview of sports and sports cultures. Unlike most works of this type, this book provides both essays that examine general topics, such as globalization and sport, international relations and sport, and tourism and sport, as well as essays on sports history, culture, and practice in world regions—for example, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and Oceania—in order to provide a more global perspective. These essays are followed by entries on specific sports, world athletes, stadiums and arenas, famous games and matches, and major controversies. Spanning topics as varied as modern professional cycling to the fictional movie Rocky to the deadly ball game of the ancient Mayans, the first three volumes contain overview essays and entries for specific sports that have been and are currently practiced around the world. The fourth volume provides a compendium of information on the winners of major sporting competitions from around the world. Readers will gain invaluable insights into how sports have been enjoyed throughout all of human culture, and more fully comprehend their cultural contexts. The entries provide suggestions for further reading on each topic—helpful to general readers, students with school projects, university students and academics alike. Additionally, the four-volume Sports Around the World spotlights key charismatic athletes who have changed a sport or become more than just an outstanding player.
