Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time or another, we have all been drawn by the fascination of the seashore. For the holiday maker, the relaxing day by the sea often turns out to be a most rewarding foray among rock pools and dense canopies of seaweed; for naturalists and students, the shore is one of the most challenging habitats. Whatever our interests and expertise, one of our first objectives when faced with the diversity of plant and animal life on the shore is to name the individual specimens and we quickly learn that this can be a difficult, though rewarding, occupation. Once an organism has been identified, a number of questions naturally follow. What is its life-cycle? How does it feed and reproduce? How long does it live? The answers to such questions give an insight into the lives of the plants and animals of the shore and are one of the first steps in an understand ing of the complexity of the shore environment. However, the information required to answer such questions is not always easily accessible and even when it is known it is often scattered in various books and research journals making it difficult and time consuming to find. Although a variety of identification keys and guides is available, some designed for the specialist, others for the amateur, such texts generally give little, if any, information on the biology of the organisms.

Download or read book Naturalists in the Field written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interposed between the natural world in all its diversity and the edited form in which we encounter it in literature, imagery and the museum, lie the multiple practices of the naturalists in selecting, recording and preserving the specimens from which our world view is to be reconstituted. The factors that weigh at every stage are here dissected, analysed and set within a historical narrative that spans more than five centuries. During that era, every aspect evolved and changed, as engagement with nature moved from a speculative pursuit heavily influenced by classical scholarship to a systematic science, drawing on advanced theory and technology. Far from being neutrally objective, the process of representing nature is shown as fraught with constraint and compromise. With a Foreword by Sir David Attenborough Contributors are: Marie Addyman, Peter Barnard, Paul D. Brinkman, Ian Convery, Peter Davis, Felix Driver, Florike Egmond, Annemarie Jordan Gschwend, Geoff Hancock, Stephen Harris, Hanna Hodacs, Stuart Houston, Dominik Huenniger, Rob Huxley, Charlie Jarvis, Malgosia Nowak-Kemp, Shepard Krech III, Mark Lawley, Arthur Lucas, Marco Masseti, Geoff Moore, Pat Morris, Charles Nelson, Robert Peck, Helen Scales, Han F. Book Synopsis Key Works to the Fauna and Flora of the British Isles and North-western Europe by : Reginald William Sims
Download or read book Key Works to the Fauna and Flora of the British Isles and North-western Europe written by Reginald William Sims and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal works for the identification of all living organisms - animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and viruses - reported from the British I sles and north-western Europe are listed in this book. The new edition has been entirely rewritten by a team of specialists. It presents a succinct selection of the relevant recent and standard literature, for use when identifying the living organisms of north-western Europe and the adjacent shelf seas. Much of the value of the work lies in its application over a wide area, helping biologists to identify rare or new records of species commonly reported in other countries. Each reference is listed with the title appearing first and the author name(s) and date appearing last, making references to a particular topic easier to find. The book is arranged under the major groups, for faster identification of specimens. With the librarian's advisory work in mind, details are provided of general guides to the fauna and flora, and the faunal lists of marine biological stations. Biologists (professional and amateur) who need to identify any living organism found in north-western Europe, and taxonomists and ecologists in particular will find this book very useful.
