Book excerpt: Large scale distributed computing systems have been extensively utilized to host critical applications in the fields of national defense, finance, scientific research, commerce, etc. However, applications in distributed systems face the risk of service outages due to inevitable faults. Without proper fault management methods, faults can lead to significant revenue loss and degradation of Quality of Service (QoS). An ideal fault management solution should guarantee fast and accurate fault diagnosis, scalability in distributed systems, portability for a variety of systems, and the versatility of recovering different types of faults. This dissertation presents a model-based fault management structure which automatically recovers computing systems from faults. This structure can recover a system from common faults while minimizing the impact on the system’s QoS. It covers all stages of fault management including fault detection, identification and recovery. It also has the flexibility to incorporate various fault diagnosis methods. When faults occur, the approach identifies fault types and intensity, and it accordingly computes the optimal recovery plan with minimum performance degradation, based on a cost function that defines performance objectives and a predictive control algorithm. The fault management approach has been verified on a centralized Web application testbed and a distributed big data processing testbed with four types of simulated faults: memory leak, network congestion, CPU hog and disk failure. The feasibility of the fault recovery control algorithm is also verified. Simulation results show that our approach enabled effective automatic recovery from faults. Performance evaluation reveals that CPU and memory overhead of the fault management process is negligible. To let domain engineers conveniently apply the proposed fault management structure on their specific systems, a component-based modeling environment is developed. The meta-model of the fault management structure is developed with Unified Modeling Language as an abstract of a general fault recovery solution for computing systems. It defines the fundamental reusable components that comprise such a system, including the connections among them, attributes of each component and constraints. The meta-model can be interpreted into a user-friendly graphic modeling environment for creating application models of practical domain specific systems and generating executable codes on them.

Many of the networks employ a distributed control scheme, which has advantages in performance and reliability over a centralized one. However, distribution of control increases the difficulty in locating faulty hardware elements. Consequently, advantages may not be fully realized unless measures are taken to account for the difficulties of fault diagnosis; yet, not much work has been done in this area. A hardcore is defined as a node or a part of a node which is fault-free and which can diagnose other elements in a system. Faults are diagnosed in most existing distributed local computer networks by assuming that every node, or a part of every node, is a fixed hardcore: a fixed node or a part of a fixed node is always a hardcore. Maintaining such high reliability may not be possible or cost-effective for some systems. A distributed network contains dynamically redundant elements, and it is reasonable to assume that fewer nodes are simultaneously faulty than are fault-free at any point in the life cycle of the network. A diagnostic model is proposed herein which determines binary evaluation results according to the status of the testing and tested nodes, and which leads the network to dynamically locate a fault-free node (a hardcore). This diagnostic model is, in most cases, simpler to implement and more cost-effective than the fixed hardcore. The selected hardcore can diagnose the other elements and can locate permanent faults. In a hop-by-hop test, the destination node and every intermediate node in a path test the transmitted data. This dissertation presents another method to locate an element with frequent transient faults; it checks data only at the destination, thereby, eliminating the need for a hop-by-hop test.

However, this complexity leads to increasing diculty in maintaining nominal operation and in detecting and diagnosing anomalies. To address maintenance through anomaly detection, diagnosis, and resolution, model-based reasoning uses a rst principles approach to assert consistency between the outputs of an operational system and a simulation of the system. The original Model-Based Anomaly Management approach leverages structural ow inherent in a system model in order to de- termine functional ow and to ultimately diagnose anomalies through constraint relaxation and propagation techniques. Networked systems, however, provide a conguration in which all high level components are structurally interconnected through a data bus; as a result, functional ow is in no way indicated by structural connectivity. In this thesis, we develop an extension to model-based anomaly management theory in which functional processing is explicitly modeled as rst principles knowledge. This allows the model-based compu- tation of appropriate anomaly candidates upstream of observed symptoms. Such lists are the standard input to the diagnosis algorithm within the existing theoretical framework. As such, our extension allows existing diagnosis and resolution systems to be used without adaptation for engineering systems composed of networked subsystems. In implementing this work, additional contributions were made in extending an existing distributed comput- ing system in order to implement plug-and-play operation and to exploit this capability in implementing the extended anomaly management system. These contributions were suc- cessfully demonstrated in a real distributed computing environment operating in the context of a spacecraft system.
