Book Synopsis Knight's Gambit by : William Faulkner
Download or read book Knight's Gambit written by William Faulkner and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faulkner's six dectective stories feature attorney Gavin Stevens, a recurring character from Faulkner's novels, as he investigates violent crimes. This newly restored edition presents the stories the way Faulkner intended them. Originally published in 1949, Knight's Gambit is a collection of six stories written in the 1930s and 1940s that focus on the criminal investigations of Gavin Stevens, the county attorney of Faulkner's fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, where so many of his famous novels are set. These stories originally appeared in magazines, where editors made substantial changes to Faulkner's manuscripts before publishing them. Some of these changes seem to have been intended to make the stories conform to prevailing styles, some were made for concision or propriety, and some to remove the regional "Southernness" of Faulkner's tales. Scholar John N. Duvall uncovered edited typescripts that revealed the deletions and changes and allowed him to restore these six stories to their original Faulknerian glory.

Book Synopsis Faulkner and Print Culture by : Jay Watson
Download or read book Faulkner and Print Culture written by Jay Watson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions by Greg Barnhisel, John N. Duvall, Kristin Fujie, Sarah E. Gardner, Jaime Harker, Kristi Rowan Humphreys, Robert Jackson, Mary A. Knighton, Jennifer Nolan, Carl Rollyson, Tim A. Ryan, Jay Satterfield, Erin A. Smith, Jay Watson, and Yung-Hsing Wu William Faulkner's first ventures into print culture began far from the world of highbrow New York publishing houses such as Boni & Liveright or Random House and little magazines such as the Double Dealer. With that diverse publishing history in mind, this collection explores Faulkner's multifaceted engagements, as writer and reader, with the US and international print cultures of his era, along with how these cultures have mediated his relationship with various twentieth- and twenty-first-century audiences. These essays address the place of Faulkner and his writings in the creation, design, publishing, marketing, reception, and collecting of books; in the culture of twentieth-century magazines, journals, newspapers, and other periodicals (from pulp to avant-garde); in the history of modern readers and readerships; and in the construction and cultural politics of literary authorship. Several contributors focus on Faulkner's sensational 1931 novel Sanctuary to illustrate the author's multifaceted relationship to the print ecology of his time, tracing the novel's path from the wellsprings of Faulkner's artistic vision to the novel's reception among reviewers, tastemakers, intellectuals, and other readers of the early 1930s. Other essayists discuss Faulkner's early notices, the Saturday Review of Literature, Saturday Evening Post, men's magazines of the 1950s, and Cold War modernism.

Download or read book Isn't Justice Always Unfair? written by J. Kenneth Van Dover and published by Popular Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isn't Justice Always Unfair? explores the uncommonly long and uncommonly rich relationship between the fictional detective and his or her South. It begins with the New Orleans expatriate, Legrand, uncovering Captain Kidd's treasure on an island off Charleston, South Carolina; it covers the satires and parodies of Mark Twain and the polished stories of Melville Davisson Post and Irvin S. Cobb; and it concludes with surveys of the many good and excellent writers who are using the form of the detective story to compose inquiries into the character of life in the South today. At the center of Isn't Justice Always Unfair? lies an analysis of a most remarkable phenomenon: William Faulkner's exploitation of the genre as an avenue into his postage stamp of Southern experience, Yoknapatawpha County.
Book Synopsis William Faulkner by : M. Thomas Inge
Download or read book William Faulkner written by M. Thomas Inge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-02-24 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive collection of contemporary published reactions to the writing of William Faulkner from 1926 to 1962, these articles document the response of reviewers to specific works, and chronicle the development of Faulkner's reputation among the nation's book reviewers. It has often been assumed that a poor reception in the popular review publications contributed to Faulkner's lack of commercial success. The material presented here tends to refute that assumption, clarifying the development of Faulkner's literary career and providing a fuller understanding of the part played by book reviewing in the sales, promotion, and success of American literature.
Book Synopsis Faulkner's People by : Robert W. Kirk
Download or read book Faulkner's People written by Robert W. Kirk and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faulkner's People is an essential reference for the student and general reader of Faulkner who seeks guidance in identifying and interrelating the more than 1,200 characters in Faulkner’s novels, short stories, and sketches. The book will help even experienced readers make their way through the labyrinth of Faulkner’s style and plots and distinguish the interconnections between all of Faulkner’s writings. The guide is constructed as follows: The novels from Soldiers’ Pay (1926) to The Reivers (1962) are listed by title in the order of their publication. Under each title, all of the named characters who appear or are mentioned in the work are listed alphabetically, together with the number of every page on which the character’s name occurs. A concise account of the actions of each character is given, together with a description of that character’s salient personality features. The name under which a character is listed in the guide is often supplied in brackets when a nickname, maiden name, or other variant is used in the sketches. Major characters in each novel are indicated by boldface type. Immediately following the section devoted to the novels appear the named characters in all of Faulkner’s short stories and sketches, which are also treated in the order of their publication. Carryover characters who are handled inconsistently by Faulkner are marked with an asterisk and treated further by the authors in the appendix. The authors have also included genealogical charts of the Sartoris, Burden, and McCaslin-Beauchamp-Edmonds families, as well as a map of Yoknapatawpha County. Finally, an alphabetically arranged master index of characters lists every work in which their names occur. Specific bibliographical information concerning editions is given, together with other editions, American and British, with the same pagination. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1963.

Since the latter, over a hundred books on Faulkner have been completed, along with hundreds of articles and dissertations. This work lists all new items, often with extensive annotations, and provides separate entries for chapters of books that cover individual novels and stories. Book Synopsis Faulkner at Fifty by : Marie Liénard-Yeterian
Download or read book Faulkner at Fifty written by Marie Liénard-Yeterian and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 commemoration ceremonies included strange bedfellows, as the year marked the 50th anniversary of the deaths of both Marilyn Monroe and William Faulkner. The Faulkner commemoration events were an opportunity for scholars to honor not just the memory of the writer, but also the memory of dear departed members of the “Faulkner community” – a community of past readers and lovers of Faulkner’s oeuvre. Divided into three parts, this collection first focuses on ways of teaching Faulkner, and then endeavors to show how the Mississippi writer made use of his knowledge of other writers to give shape to his craft and later help others. The last section puts Faulkner into perspective by bringing together new ways of reading his works and new voices that echo his. The twenty-first century shows how Faulkner’s fiction can be dislodged from its traditional moorings, dislocated and placed in movement, and transformed and tutored into new meanings and significance. This volume is a tribute to the memory of Noel Polk, André Bleikasten and Michel Gresset, pioneers in charting the course of the Faulkner journey.
