Book excerpt: In 1979 the first InternationalSymposium on Low CycleFatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials was held in Stuttgart, FRG. Since then research in low cycle fatigue has proceeded rapidly. The vital interest of engineers and researchers in communicating the rapid advances in the ongoing research in low cycle fatigue has encouraged me to initiate again the Second International Conference which was held in Munich, FRG, 7-11 September 1987. Failure in low cycle fatigue represents a serious problem in the design and opera tion of highly stressed structures. Under complex loading and environmental cir cumstances, especially for high temperature services, reliable life prediction can not be expected without detailed consideration of the failure mechanism and with out extensive use of mechanistic approaches. The purpose of this conference was to provide a forum to discuss the advances in recent research in the field of low cycle fatigue. The conference was intended to help to further bridge the gap between those who are involved in basic research, and the engineers who have to perform the design of highly stressed structural components.

Book excerpt: The Second International Symposium on Defects, Fracture and Fatigue took place at Mont Gabriel, Quebec, Canada, May 30 to June 5, 1982, and was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Department of McGill University and Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics, Lehigh University. The Co-Chairmen of the Sympo sium were Professor G.C. Sih of Lehigh University and Professor J.W. Provan of McGill University. Among those who served on the Organizing Committee were G.C. Sih (Co-Chairman), J.W. Provan (Co-Chairman), H. Mughrabi, H. Zorski, R. Bullough, M. Matczynski, G. Barenblatt and G. Caglioti. As a result of the interest expressed at the First Symposium that was held in October 1980, in Po land, the need for a follow-up meeting to further explore the phenomena of mate rial damage became apparent. Among the areas considered were dislocations, per sistent-slip-bands, void creation, microcracking, microstructure effects, micro/ macro fracture mechanics, ductile fracture criteria, fatigue crack initiation and propagation, stress and failure analysis, deterministic and statistical crack models, and fracture control. This wide spectrum of topics attracted researchers and engineers in solid state physics, continuum mechanics, applied mathematics, metallurgy and fracture mechanics from many different countries. This spectrum is also indicative of the interdisciplinary character of material damage that must be addressed at the atomic, microscopic and macroscopic scale level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding of time dependent crack propagation processes occupies a central place in the study of fracture. It also encompasses a wide range of conditions: failure under sustained loading in a corrosive environment, fracture under cyclic loading in non-degrading and in corrosive environment, and rupture at high temperature. This list covers probably 90% of the failures that occur in engineering practice. The process of time dependent fracture is controlled by the physics of atomic interaction changes; it is strongly influenced by the micro structure; and affected by the interaction of the material with the mechanical (load, displacement), the thermal (temperature), and the chemical or radiation environment. To be able to control crack propagation the development of testing methods and the understanding of the industrial environment is essential. The conference was organized in this context. A call was issued for contributions to the following topics. THERMAL ACTIVATION. Theoretical papers dealing with the modification of fracture mechanics to accommodate thermally activated processes. TIME DEPENDENT MICRO-PROCESSES. Presentations covering both the theoretical and observational aspects of creep and fatigue damage in materials whose microstructures may exert a significant influence on crack growth. INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS. Submissions describing the practical application of fracture mechanics and damage tolerance analysis to the determination of useful operating lives. x ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS. Papers dealing with engineering materials and/or components exposed to aggressive environments, with and without temperature effects. The response was gratifying. Leading experts responded; the organizers of the conference are grateful for the large number of excellent contributions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small structures of the micro/nanometer scale, such as electronic/optic devices and MEMS/NEMS have been developed, and the size of their elements now approaches the nano/atomic scale. This book discuses the fracture behavior of nano/atomic elements (nanofilms, nanowires, and so on) and focuses on the initiation and propagation of interface crack and mechanical instability criterion of atomic structures. This covers the fundamentals and the applicability of the top-down (conventional fracture mechanics to nanoscale) and bottom-up (atomic mechanics including ab initio simulation) concepts. New areas, such as multiphysics characteristics of nanoelements, are introduced as well.

Book excerpt: Strength of Metals and Alloys is a collection of papers presented at the 5th International Conference on the Strength of Metals and Alloys held in Aachen, Germany, on August 27-31, 1979. Contributors explore advances that have been made in understanding the strength of metals and alloys and cover topics ranging from plasticity and crystal structure to microstructural models for friction and wear; dynamical effects in deformation; and microscopic mechanisms of metal fatigue. This volume is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with an analysis of the differences between the plastic deformation of face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centered cubic metals in relation to intrinsic dislocation mobilities resulting from the interaction of the dislocation core with the crystal lattice. The reader is then introduced to dislocation models for fatigue and their application to cases of friction and wear. The following chapters focus on the mechanisms controlling the creep of single phase metals and alloys; precipitation and dispersion hardening; deformation of polycrystals; solid solution hardening; and superposition of alloy hardening, strain hardening, and dynamic recovery. The results of in situ deformation experiments using high-voltage electron microscopy are also presented. The final chapter is devoted to the mechanisms underlying the recovery and recrystallization of doped tungsten. This monograph will be a valuable resource for metallurgists and materials scientists.
