Book excerpt: Sections of cannon tubes with inner radius of 53, 60, and 78 mm were cycled from near zero to 100 to 300 MPa internal pressure until fatigue failure occurred. The failure locations were along 2-mm holes cut through the cannon wall at a 30 deg angle to the tube axis, for the purpose of evacuating combustion gases from the cannon after firing. The cannons had various amount of autofrettage by overstraining including 0, 30, 50, and 100 percent. The amount of overstrain affected both the initiation position of the fatigue crack along the evacuator hole and the measured fatigue life. Increasing the amount of overstrain moved the crack initiation from the tube inner radius toward a mid- wall position and significantly increased fatigue life. Fracture mechanics and solid mechanics-based calculations of fatigue life were performed for comparison with the measured lives. The calculations gave a good description of the measured life, taking account of tube configuration, applied pressure, amount of overstrain, stress concentration of the hole. Crack size and shape, material fatigue crack rate behavior and yield strength, and pressure in the hole and on the crack surfaces. As with measured fatigue life, the calculated life was significantly affected by the amount of autofrettage of the tube. The ratio of outer-to-inner radius of the tube and the presence of pressure in the evacuator hole also had substantial effects on the calculated fatigue life. (MM).

This book was released on 1994 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stress analysis has been conducted on a pressurized, fully or partially autofrettaged cylinder with a small diameter evacuator hole penetrating radially through the wall. Pressure was applied on the inside diameter (ID) of the tube, and all or part of this pressure was applied on the evacuator hole surfaces. Total hoop stress concentrations have been determined for a range of radial locations along the evacuator and stress intensity factors have been determined along a crack emanating from the evacuator hole. Fatigue crack growth rates. and hence crack profiles, were predicted at each of the radial locations. These predictions indicate that the critical location for the crack in a non-autofrettaged tube is at the ID, whereas in a fully autofrettaged tube, it is located approximately halfway through the wall thickness. Stress ratio has a significant influence on crack shape in autofrettaged tubes, however, it has a limited effect upon lifetime. The effect of axial residual stresses upon fatigue lifetime due to the autofrettage process has been described and an insignificant reduction in lifetime was a result of such stresses. Finally, the predicted profiles are compared with experimental observations of fatigue crack evacuators, and a limited comparison of predicted and actual lifetimes is presented. Good agreement has been observed in both comparisons. jg.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastic, elastic-plastic, and experimental stress analyses and fatigue lifetime predictions are presented for thick cylinders containing multiple, axial holes within the wall. The holes are generally semi-elliptical (including semi-circular) and the cylinders are autofrettaged after introduction of the holes and are subsequently subjected to cyclic pressurization of the bore. Two potentially critical failure locations are identified; a fracture-mechanics based design methodology is proposed; elastic and elastic-plastic finite element (FE) analyses are undertaken. The elastic FE analysis predicts hoop stresses at the bore resulting from internal pressurization which are some 7% higher than those for the equivalent plain tube. For a given hole size and location and for nominal overstrains of 40% or greater, the residual compressive stress at the bore is reduced by approximately 15% below the value for a plain tube of the same radius ratio. Two experimental investigations are reported, one based upon X-ray diffraction, to measure residual stresses, and the other based upon radial tube slitting, to measure opening angle. They confirm most features of the residual stress profiles predicted from FE analysis, with the exception of high compressive residual stresses and stress gradients immediately adjacent to the hole boundaries. Appropriate use of the residual stress information permits prediction of tube lifetimes for cracks emanating from the bore and from the hole. For the geometry and loading under consideration, the more critical location is predicted to be the hole boundary, the lifetime for failures originating from this point being some 60% of the lifetime for cracks originating at the bore.

Book excerpt: Claude Wheeler is a young man who was born after the American frontier has vanished. The son of a successful farmer and an intensely pious mother, Wheeler is guaranteed a comfortable livelihood. Nevertheless, Wheeler views himself as a victim of his father's success and his own inexplicable malaise. Thus, devoid of parental and spousal love, Wheeler finds a new purpose to his life in France, a faraway country that only existed for him in maps before the First World War. Will Wheeler ever succeed in his new goal? The novel is inspired from real-life events and also won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923.

Within it, world events between 1933 and 2106 are speculated with a single superstate representing the solution to all humanity's problems. A classic example of Wellsian prophesy, this volume is highly recommended for fans of his work and of the science fiction genre. Herbert George Wells (1866 - 1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, politics, history, and social commentary. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the science fiction genre thanks to such novels as "The Time Machine" (1895), "The Invisible Man" (1897), and "The War of the Worlds" (1898). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Book excerpt: The violence wrought by climate change, toxic drift, deforestation, oil spills, and the environmental aftermath of war takes place gradually and often invisibly. Using the innovative concept of "slow violence" to describe these threats, Rob Nixon focuses on the inattention we have paid to the attritional lethality of many environmental crises, in contrast with the sensational, spectacle-driven messaging that impels public activism today. Slow violence, because it is so readily ignored by a hard-charging capitalism, exacerbates the vulnerability of ecosystems and of people who are poor, disempowered, and often involuntarily displaced, while fueling social conflicts that arise from desperation as life-sustaining conditions erode. In a book of extraordinary scope, Nixon examines a cluster of writer-activists affiliated with the environmentalism of the poor in the global South. By approaching environmental justice literature from this transnational perspective, he exposes the limitations of the national and local frames that dominate environmental writing. And by skillfully illuminating the strategies these writer-activists deploy to give dramatic visibility to environmental emergencies, Nixon invites his readers to engage with some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
