Book excerpt: Between 1997 and 1999, a Working Group on the feasibility of collaborative, multi-facility windtunnel testing for the validation of Computational Fluid Dynamics Codes (CFD) has established the following results: Wintunnel tests are the main source of CFD validation but all have specific bias errors. Testing of the same model in several facilities can better establish the level of uncertainty in windtunnel tests and hence help assess possible differences between CFD and windtunnel tests. The Working Group, after an initial inquiry, established the need for CFD validation for fighter aircraft, transport type aircraft, missiles and helicopters. Effort and cost can be controlled efficiently and would permit the improvement of CFD Codes for considerable cost saving in future developments.

Book excerpt: In accordance with the mission of AGARD the Structures and Materials Panel (SMP) has always kept an open eye for the possibilities to sponsor collaborative programmes of research. AGARD is unique in its ability to realise the cooperation of laboratories in up to sixteen nations. In this way AGARD distinguishes itself from other international scientific and technical organisations. In the 1970s the SMP decided to embark on collaborative research activities in the area of fatigue. One of the first activities was the Corrosion Fatigue Cooperative Testing Programme (CFCTP), the recursor to the Fatigue in Aircraft Corrosion Testing (FACT) programme. Both programmes are described in this report. Failure by fatigue and degradation by corrosion continue to be major considerations in aircraft design. Environmental effects influence both initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, and dynamic loading may cause more rapid deterioration of corrosion protection systems. Therefore the conjuoint action of dynamic loading and environmental attack, i.e. corrosion fatigue, requires special attention. Many corrosion fatigue tests have been done on aluminum alloys. However, few included critical structural details like joints, under realistic cyclic load histories and in service-like environments. Even fewer used practical corrosion protection systems. These aspects are specifically addressed bye the CFCTP and FACT programmes. The results provide a significant contribution to the understanding of aircraft corrosion fatigue and should encourage further investigation in this difficult and challenging area of aerospace technology.

Each component of the infrastructure-such as highways, airports, water supply, waste treatment, energy supply, and power generation-represents a complex system requiring significant investment. Within that infrastructure both the private and government sectors have equipment and facilities that are subject to degradation by corrosion, which significantly reduces the lifetime, reliability, and functionality of structures and equipment, while also threatening human safety. The direct costs of corrosion to the U.S. economy represent 3.2 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), and the total costs to society can be twice that or greater. Opportunities for savings through improved corrosion control exist in every economic sector. The workshop, Corrosion Education for the 21st Century, brought together corrosion specialists, leaders in materials and engineering education, government officials, and other interested parties. The workshop was also attended by members of NRC's Committee on Assessing Corrosion Education, who are carrying out a study on this topic. The workshop panelists and speakers were asked to give their personal perspectives on whether corrosion abatement is adequately addressed in our nation's engineering curricula and, if not, what issues need to be addressed to develop a comprehensive corrosion curriculum in undergraduate engineering. This proceedings consists of extended abstracts from the workshop's speakers that reflect their personal views as presented to the meeting. Book excerpt: This textbook, suitable for students, researchers and engineers, gathers the experience of more than 20 years of teaching fracture mechanics, fatigue and corrosion to professional engineers and running experimental tests and verifications to solve practical problems in engineering applications. As such, it is a comprehensive blend of fundamental knowledge and technical tools to address the issues of fatigue and corrosion. The book initiates with a systematic description of fatigue from a phenomenological point of view, since the early signs of submicroscopic damage in few surface grains and continues describing, step by step, how these precursors develop to become mechanically small cracks and, eventually, macrocracks whose growth is governed by fracture mechanics. But fracture mechanics is also introduced to analyze stress corrosion and corrosion assisted fatigue in a rather advanced fashion. The author dedicates a particular attention to corrosion starting with an electrochemical treatment that mechanical engineers with a rather limited knowledge of electrochemistry will well digest without any pain. The electrochemical introduction is considered an essential requirement to the full understanding of corrosion that is essentially an electrochemical process. All stress corrosion aspects are treated, from the generalized film rupture-anodic dissolution process that is the base of any corrosion mechanism to the aggression occurring in either mechanically or thermally sensitized alloys up to the universe of hydrogen embrittlement, which is described in all its possible modes of appearance. Multiaxial fatigue and out-of-phase loading conditions are treated in a rather comprehensive manner together with damage progression and accumulation that are not linear processes. Load spectra are analyzed also in the frequency domain using the Fourier transform in a rather elegant fashion full of applications that are generally not considered at all in fatigue textbooks, yet they deserve a special place and attention. The issue of fatigue cannot be treated without a probabilistic approach unless the designer accepts the shame of one-out-of-two pieces failure. The reader is fully introduced to the most promising and advanced analytical tools that do not require a normal or lognormal distribution of the experimental data, which is the most common case in fatigue. But the probabilistic approach is also used to introduce the fundamental issue of process volume that is the base of any engineering application of fatigue, from the probability of failure to the notch effect, from the metallurgical variability and size effect to the load type effect. Fractography plays a fundamental role in the post mortem analysis of fatigue and corrosion failures since it can unveil the mystery encrypted in any failure.
