Book Synopsis Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures by : Andrea Carpinteri
Download or read book Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures written by Andrea Carpinteri and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1994 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. The purpose of this Handbook is to provide a review of the knowledge and experiences in the field of fatigue fracture mechanics. It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.

Book Synopsis Fracture Mechanics and Micromechanisms of Failure in Wrought and Sintered High Speed Steels by : Manuel Antonio Real Gomes
Download or read book Fracture Mechanics and Micromechanisms of Failure in Wrought and Sintered High Speed Steels written by Manuel Antonio Real Gomes and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical behaviour of wrought and sintered HSSs, namely: T1, T42, ASP60 and its water atomised counterpart P59 was studied in four-point bending. The steels possessed a range of microstructures with maximum carbide sizes ranging from 6 to 34 micrometers. The strengths were in the range tilda 1-3 GPa, the strains below 2% and only in some specimens of Tl, ASP60 and P59 was macroscopic yielding, at stresses of 1.64-2.59 GPa, detected. Fracture toughness of T1, ASP60 and P59 was determined for the hardness range tilda 750-930 Hv50, and K1C found to vary between 10 and 23 MPa.ml/2. generally decreasing with increasing hardness. Only some specimens failed from pre-existing flaws: pores and broken carbides In other specimens critical stresses for crack initiation and growth were determined by taking replicas of the specimen's tensile faces at progressively increasing stresses during the bend tests. Crack initiation occurred in the stress range of 0.5 to 1.75 GPa and corresponding strains 0.2-1.24%, generally before macroscopic yielding. In steels with the finest microstructures, i.e. undersintered+HIPed, crack nucleation was the critical stage of fracture. For coarser microstructures catastrophic propagation was preceded by a stage of subcritical crack growth. It started at stresses of tilda 0.7- 2.7 GPa, in most cases below those for yielding. Crack nuclei were non-metallic inclusions, carbides or carbide/matrix interfaces. The results are discussed in terms of recent models developed for fatigue short crack behaviour, and R-curve analysis of ceramic and composite materials. Stepwise, subcritical growth of natural cracks under monotonic loading is illustrated by several replica sequences.

Book Synopsis Fatigue-crack Propagation and Residual Static Strength of PH 15-7 Mo (TH 1050) Stainless Steel by : C. M. Hudson
Download or read book Fatigue-crack Propagation and Residual Static Strength of PH 15-7 Mo (TH 1050) Stainless Steel written by C. M. Hudson and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack propagation and residual static-strength data from tests on 2-inch (5.1-cm) wide sheet specimens made of PH 15-7 Mo (TH 1050) stainless steel are presented in this report. In addition, the capabilities of McEvily and Illg's crack-growth analysis and Kuhn and Figge's residual strength analysis to correlate the test data have been investigated. Kuhn and Figge's equation for calculating the stress concentration factors for cracks was used in both analyses. Analysis of the data showed that the crack growth and residual strength analyses satisfactorily correlated the majority of the test data.
