Download or read book Father Dolling: A Memoir Edited with an Introduction by Matthew Fisher written by Joseph Clayton and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Clayton (1868-1943) wrote this short memoir of his dear friend of fourteen years shortly after Father Dolling's death. Dolling's account of the work at Portsmouth was published. Whilst Ten Years tells the story of the Irish High Church slum-priest's incredible devotion to the poor people of Landport, this memoir encourages the reader to understand all Dolling's work and also his views on politics; the theatre and literature; the Boer War, including soldiers pay; his ?methods? with drunk Vicars; and even the issues of water supply to East London. Therefore, this short Memoir is more than a memorial to the deceased Father Dolling, it provides insights into many aspects of late Victorian city life and attitudes to a wide range of topics.

Book Synopsis Fatherhood and the British Working Class, 1865-1914 by : Julie-Marie Strange
Download or read book Fatherhood and the British Working Class, 1865-1914 written by Julie-Marie Strange and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering study of Victorian and Edwardian fatherhood, investigating what being, and having, a father meant to working-class people. Based on working-class autobiography, the book challenges dominant assumptions about absent or 'feckless' fathers, and reintegrates the paternal figure within the emotional life of families. Locating autobiography within broader social and cultural commentary, Julie-Marie Strange considers material culture, everyday practice, obligation, duty and comedy as sites for the development and expression of complex emotional lives. Emphasising the importance of separating men as husbands from men as fathers, Strange explores how emotional ties were formed between fathers and their children, the models of fatherhood available to working-class men, and the ways in which fathers interacted with children inside and outside the home. She explodes the myth that working-class interiorities are inaccessible or unrecoverable, and locates life stories in the context of other sources, including social surveys, visual culture and popular fiction.

Book Synopsis The Cowley Fathers in Philadelphia by : Steven Haws CR
Download or read book The Cowley Fathers in Philadelphia written by Steven Haws CR and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of an Anglican Religious Community established in the parish of Cowley, Oxford, England in 1866—the Society of S. John the Evangelist. From their geographic location they soon became known as “The Cowley Fathers”. Four years later they expanded their work in America, first in Boston and later in Philadelphia where they were invited to take charge of S. Clement’s Church. Soon after their arrival there was suspicion and misunderstanding on the part of many in the Diocese of Pennsylvania who did not accept this mostly foreign group of priests from England. The deep compassion for the poor and marginalized, the relief work in the face of tragedy and disaster won their critics over and eventually opposition ceased. The Cowley Fathers whose influence attracted the poor and wealthy soon spread beyond the confines of the parish. Their ministry through teaching, preaching, retreats, missions and spiritual counsel attracted many. Interest in the Society grew. By the end of the 19th century there were branch houses in India, South Africa and Scotland. This book offers a unique account of the SSJE Community in Philadelphia and the parish they served.
