Book excerpt: From a Newbery Honor author, a boy loans his dog to the US Army during World War II in this “incisive tale of loyalty, patriotism, sacrifice and bravery” (Publishers Weekly). Hanson is determined to do his part to help his family and his country, even if it means giving up his beloved German shepherd, Duke. Hoping to help end the war and bring his dad home faster, Hobie decides to donate Duke to Dogs for Defense, an organization that urges Americans to “loan” their pets to the military to act as sentries, mine sniffers, and patrol dogs. Hobie immediately regrets his decision and tries everything he can to get Duke back, even jeopardizing his friendship with the new boy at school. But when his father is taken prisoner by the Germans, Hobie realizes he must let Duke go and reach deep within himself to be brave. Will Hobie ever see Duke, or his father, again? Will life ever be the same? “Exceptionally well-crafted and emotionally authentic.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: This historical depiction follows the development of the German Shepherd dog from an assortment of mixed breeds that herded sheep in the late eighteenth century, in Germany to the breed of today; a breed that excels not only in sheep herding, but police, rescue and other purposes. The rules that were developed by the German club that was created for the purpose of standardizing what was wanted as a herding dog also creating a standard as to what was expected in regard to structural and temperament quality. Each year in Germany there is a Specialty show where the member judges pick the dog and female, regarded as closes to the ideal where their progeny is also considered. They also pick a select class and rate all the dogs on the basis of an analysis of each dog present. They do critiques on every dog. Must of this system has been followed worldwide, to a degree, and studies of pedigrees that determines the pillars of the breed and the most desirous to breed to have continued through the years, as have dog shows that select the best. This is followed through the book especially through the dogs imported to North America as well as analyses of the most desirous structure as it relates to the way the dogs move. Examples of dogs moving, stopped in various positions, are analyzed, describing the relationship to structure as are the pedigrees of many of the influential dogs through the history of the breed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Steve McKee watched his father die of a heart attack on the couch in their TV room. A lifelong smoker and workaholic, John McKee had been floored by a heart attack five years earlier. The McKee clan-perhaps including a demoralized John himself-had long been waiting for the other shoe to drop. At age fifty-two, Steve McKee learned that he was his father's son more than he had ever hoped-he, too, has serious cardiovascular disease. Haunted by his father's seeming surrender to the condition, McKee set out to find the man who died before the son could know him. In so doing, what might he, Steve McKee, learn of himself? Chronicling the disorienting first days following John McKee's death, My Father's Heart is an extraordinary story of an all-too-ordinary scenario: A father dies, a son remains, and the loss casts a long shadow across a generation. Rich in evocative detail of time, place, and family, it is a powerful memoir of love, forgiveness, and finding oneself.

From the prize–winning title story—a masterpiece of humor and heartbreak—unfolds a collection of tales that illuminate the landscape of an exiled community rich in heritage, memory, and longing for the past. In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd is at once “tender and sharp-fanged” as Ana Menéndez evocatively charts the territory from Havana to Coral Gables, Florida, and explores whether any of us are capable, or even truly desirous, of outrunning our origins (LA Weekly). “With the grace of Margaret Atwood and the sensuality of Laura Esquivel,” Menéndez makes an unforgettable debut “rich in metaphor, wisdom, and delicious subtlety” (St. Petersburg Times).

Book excerpt: An ambitious man and his adoring daughter are separated and estranged by an ocean and by the tides of history in this “marvelous” novel (Los Angeles Times). For Anna Schoene, growing up in the magical world of Shanghai in the 1930s creates a special bond between her and her father. He is the son of missionaries, a smuggler, and a millionaire who leads a charmed but secretive life. When the family flees to Los Angeles in the face of the Japanese occupation, he chooses to stay, believing his connections and luck will keep him safe. He’s wrong—but he survives, only to again choose Shanghai over his family during the Second World War. Anna and her father reconnect late in his life, when she finally has a family of her own, but it is only when she discovers his extensive journals that she is able to fully understand him and the reasons for his absences. The Distant Land of My Father is a “beautiful” novel “for everyone who has ever felt himself in exile from any beloved place, or a time that can never return” (The Washington Post Book World). “Seamlessly weaves together Anna’s own memories with those of her father, gleaned from the journals . . . An elegant, refined story of families, wartime, and the mystique of memory.” —Kirkus Reviews “Vivid with details of prewar Shanghai and Los Angeles.” —Publishers Weekly “Lush and epic.” —San Jose Mercury News “Remarkable . . . A moving tale of love and the possibility of forgiveness.” —Library Journal

Book excerpt: This book is about the extremely interesting and emotional events from the life of two German Shepherds, and about the real value of friendship between people and dogs. The many unforgettable and exciting moments from the lives of domestic dogs and their owners, which are illustrated in such a lively way in this book, will surely entertain you. The book describes the life stages of a German Shepherd, from the first time she meets the people she came to love so much that she decided to come back to live a second life at their side. When you read this book it will be easy for you to understand the connection between the death and rebirth of a dog's soul. Many interesting things have been written about various people and their reincarnation into a new body. In this book, Thomas Walter, a contemporary new author, tells the story of how his German Shepherd Molly sought out a new body and took advantage of the opportunity to be reborn. The fact that her soul sought out a male dog's body is probably because she always wanted to be a male dog - have you ever seen a female dog lift her leg when she was "doing her business"?

Book excerpt: It had not been a conscious decision to cling to the better memories of his childhood. It had just happened when Hannah came along and the possibility of a brighter future dragged his scowling face away from the details of his past. Now, standing in the middle of the poorly part-mowed field, in front of the house that was hiding all the reasons he had run away, he wondered if it would be possible to hold the past and present in tension.' Robbie Hanright has a normal, settled life in Dublin. With a wife and baby, an undemanding job and a nice home, everything is just as he wants it. However, after an enduring estrangement from the rural landscape of his youth, Robbie receives a phone call from his sister asking him to come home. Left with little choice, Robbie returns once more to County Down, and to Larkscroft Farm, to confront the father who tormented his childhood and face up to a history he wants only to forget. Set against the backdrop of a decaying farmhouse and fragile family connections, My Father's House is a powerful, lyrical story of loss and regret, through which Bethany Dawson reveals an affecting compassion for the profound, and often painful, complexities of family life.
