Book excerpt: Fathers with children at home account for a substantial portion of the Canadian population. In contemporary Canada, a father's role no longer consists of distant breadwinning, but rather actively engaging in a family-centered lifestyle and being more involved in child care. Extensive research has focused primarily on the experiences of mothers and given very little attention to involved fathers. This study sought out to explore how fathers understand and describe involved fatherhood. Six participants, who identified as engaged fathers, participated in conversational interviews. The findings suggest that daily interaction through child rearing and playing with children was viewed as part of the father role. As a result, fathers adjusted their paid work and leisure pursuits in order to "be there" for their children. Fathers resisted dominant gendered ideologies through completing 'feminine' domestic chores, providing emotional care, and taking full responsibility for children's care throughout the week. Fathers also reproduced gendered norms, particularly during children's play, and by not taking paid parental leave. This research found that fathers resisted and reproduced gendered roles, and negotiated numerous constraints to meet their fathering responsibilities, which did not consist of solely playing with children. Fathers' involvement level is greatly influenced by leave policies in Canada; therefore changes to leave policies and pay equity are needed to support increased father involvement.

The book brings together three major theoretical strands: social policy, in particular the literature on comparative leave policy developments; family and gender studies, in particular the analysis of gendered divisions of work and care and recent shifts in parenting and work-family balance; critical studies of men and masculinities, with a specific focus on fathers and fathering in contemporary western societies and life-courses. Drawing on empirical data from in-depth interviews with fathers across eleven countries, the book shows that the experiences and social processes associated with fathers’ home alone leave involve a diversity of trends, revealing both innovations and absence of change, including pluralization as well as the constraining influence of policy, gender, and social context. Book excerpt: "Indigenous fathers in Canada are thought to represent a crucial, yet often untapped resource, in fostering the health and well-being of their children. Understanding their role in promoting positive outcomes for Indigenous youth is essential in a time that strength-based research, intervention, and policy prioritize the identification of factors that foster resilience, mental wellness, and educational achievement in this young and growing population. The goal of this dissertation is to explore the impact of the paternal relationship on markers of adolescent adjustment among Indigenous youth. The association between adolescents’ perceptions of their relationships with their fathers or father figures and their social-emotional, behavioral, and academic functioning was examined among youth residing in Kawawachikamach, a First Nations community in northern Quebec. The participants of the study completed self-report questionnaires examining their paternal relationships and adaptive functioning. Teacher reports and final grades were used to measure academic competence. Linear regression analysis was chosen to determine the direct link between paternal involvement and indicators of well-being and the interaction effects of adolescent gender and father’s level of education. The results of the study indicated that adolescents who reported more positive relationships with their fathers or father figures, were more likely to experience fewer internalizing, externalizing, and social problems. Gender did not significantly moderate the relationship between paternal involvement and outcomes, indicating that girls and boys benefitted equally from higher levels of involvement. Significant interaction effects were found between paternal involvement and education, with adolescents whose fathers were more educated benefitting the most from their involvement in the internalizing and social domains. However, while behavioral and social-emotional adjustment could be partially explained by the supportive paternal relationship reported by adolescents, their academic achievement was not significantly impacted and may be better explained by variables not explored in the present study. Overall, the results were consistent with the body of research that highlights the benefits of involved fathers across different cultures. Future directions include a need to further investigate the predictors of paternal involvement and its effects on adolescent outcomes in Indigenous populations in Canada and the responsibility to invest in Indigenous fathers and support their involvement in the lives of their children"--
