Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book are devoted to the elementary reactions of small molecules in the gas phase, with some emphasis on reactions important in combustion. The first three chapters cover experimental measurements made at high temperatures, mainly using shock waves and flames; the final chapter describes discharge flow methods near room temperature. The authors-all active in the fields they describe were asked to aim at a level intermediate between a textbook and a review, designed for readers not already familiar with this branch of chemical kinetics. We hope the book will prove especially useful to research workers in related subjects, to research students, and perhaps as source material for the preparation of lectures. The examples have been chosen to illustrate the theoretical basis of the topics rather than attempt a complete coverage. Professors Wagner and Troe describe the remarkable progress made in recent years in measuring dissociation rates for small molecules. Tests ofunimolecular reaction theories are usually made in the 'fall-off' region of pressure: the kinetics change from first order to second order as the pressure is reduced. For large molecules this region lies below atmospheric pressure and is relatively easily accessible. For molecules with four or less atoms, however, the fall-off region lies well above atmospheric pressure: it has been explored using the high pressure shock tube techniques developed by the authors.

Book excerpt: Published a few years after the author's death, this volume is a sequel to his 1964 book, Fast Reactions in Solution; the material is entirely new, extending investigation beyond now well-established fast-reaction techniques to consider their contribution to understanding events on the molecular scale. After an introductory chapter on origins, methods, mechanisms, and rate constants, coverage includes the rates of diffusion-controlled reactions, mathematical theory of diffusion, flash photolysis techniques, fluorescence quenching, Marcus theory involving proton-transfer and group-transfer reactions in solutions, and electron-transfer reactions. Book excerpt: Chemical Kinetics and Reaction Dynamics brings together the major facts and theories relating to the rates with which chemical reactions occur from both the macroscopic and microscopic point of view. This book helps the reader achieve a thorough understanding of the principles of chemical kinetics and includes: Detailed stereochemical discussions of reaction steps Classical theory based calculations of state-to-state rate constants A collection of matters on kinetics of various special reactions such as micellar catalysis, phase transfer catalysis, inhibition processes, oscillatory reactions, solid-state reactions, and polymerization reactions at a single source. The growth of the chemical industry greatly depends on the application of chemical kinetics, catalysts and catalytic processes. This volume is therefore an invaluable resource for all academics, industrial researchers and students interested in kinetics, molecular reaction dynamics, and the mechanisms of chemical reactions.

Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this comprehensive monograph consists of two parts: Volume I, entitled Enzyme Catalysis, Kinetics, and Substrate Binding; and Volume II, entitled Mechanism of Enzyme Action. Volume I focuses on several aspects of enzyme catalytic behavior, their steady-state and transient-state kinetics, and the thermodynamic properties of substrate binding. Packed with figures, tables, schemes, and photographs, this volume contains over 1,000 references, including references regarding enzymology's fascinating history. This comprehensive book is of particular interest to enzymology students, teachers, and researchers. Volume II presents selected "cutting edge" examples of techniques and approaches being pursued in biochemistry. This up-to-date resource includes 11 chapters, which illustrate important theoretical and practical aspects of enzyme mechanisms. It also features selected examples in which today's most important techniques, ideas, and theories are used to elaborate on the intricate nature of enzyme action mechanisms. This particular volume provides important information for both the novice and the seasoned investigator.

Book excerpt: Progress in Reaction Kinetics discusses the main themes of chemical kinetics. It covers such topics as the reactions of halogen atoms and methylenes, mercury photosensitized reactions, anionic polymerization, cis trans-isomerisation, and protolytic reactions. The book provides a good illustration of the quantitative rate studies in biochemical systems. The experiments to determine the relative rate constants are shown and analyzed. The process of photosensitization involves absorption of light energy by a strongly absorbing substance. The methods to identify the reactions of carbonyl compounds, organic acids and esters are presented as well as the reactions of alcohols, ethers, and epoxides. The degree of reaction of some haem compounds is explained. A chapter of the book focuses on the kinetic treatment of processes that takes place in a series of steps. Such procedures are called consecutive processes. A sample of these is the rate-determining step approximation. The book will provide useful information to chemists, chemical engineers, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: As a result of the pioneering efforts of Eigen, de Maeyer, Norrish and Porter, the kinetics of fast reactions in solution can now be studied using chemical relaxation methods, as well as many other fast reactions techniques. These methods have been applied successfully in many branches of the natural sciences. The simultaneous growth in the number of investiga tors and the diversity of their research interests has inevitably led to communication problems. The purpose of the NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "New Applications of Chemical Relaxation Spectrometry and Other Fast Reaction Methods in Solution", was to create a forum so that research scientists working in different areas concerned with fast reactions could interact. This meeting was held at the Llandinam Building, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from September 10th-20th, 1978. In addition to lectures on techniques and theory, two days of the NATO Advanced Study Institute, were spent discussing the current state of the art in this field. This two day meeting was also run under the auspices of the Chemical Society, Fast Reactions in Solution Group. The papers in this volume are the result of the contribu tions given in the Aberystwyth meeting. We have attempted to make this volume useful for the non-expert and a comprehensive introduction to theory, as well as the instrumentation used in the studies are discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: This book presents the formal lectures and contributed papers given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Fast Reactions in Energetic Systems, which took place in Preveza, Greece, during the period 6-19 July 1980. The material describes experimental observations and the more advanced theoretical aspects of certain types of fast reactions and energy or charge transfer processes which are usually complete 6 12 in periods of 10- - 10- seconds. Furthermore, it discusses the role of macroscopic and molecular processes in the ignition, combustion, deflagration, and detonation of solid, liquid, and gaseous chemical systems. Various papers deal with the ability of molecules to absorb and transmit the different forms of energy provided by shock, light, thermal, or electron pulses, and to contribute to the propagation of reactions under high temperatures and pressures. The role of energy pumped or transferred to electronic or vibrational states is discussed in terms of excitation, ionization, bond scission, and the formation of free radicals. The dynamics and reactivity of ionic species, electronically and vibrationally excited states, and free radicals are described for various gaseous, liquid, and solid systems. The proceedings include presentations of theoretical and experimental techniques to describe and observe the phenomena.
