Book excerpt: MPEG-4 is the multimedia standard for combining interactivity, natural and synthetic digital video, audio and computer-graphics. Typical applications are: internet, video conferencing, mobile videophones, multimedia cooperative work, teleteaching and games. With MPEG-4 the next step from block-based video (ISO/IEC MPEG-1, MPEG-2, CCITT H.261, ITU-T H.263) to arbitrarily-shaped visual objects is taken. This significant step demands a new methodology for system analysis and design to meet the considerably higher flexibility of MPEG-4. Motion estimation is a central part of MPEG-1/2/4 and H.261/H.263 video compression standards and has attracted much attention in research and industry, for the following reasons: it is computationally the most demanding algorithm of a video encoder (about 60-80% of the total computation time), it has a high impact on the visual quality of a video encoder, and it is not standardized, thus being open to competition. Algorithms, Complexity Analysis, and VLSI Architectures for MPEG-4 Motion Estimation covers in detail every single step in the design of a MPEG-1/2/4 or H.261/H.263 compliant video encoder: Fast motion estimation algorithms Complexity analysis tools Detailed complexity analysis of a software implementation of MPEG-4 video Complexity and visual quality analysis of fast motion estimation algorithms within MPEG-4 Design space on motion estimation VLSI architectures Detailed VLSI design examples of (1) a high throughput and (2) a low-power MPEG-4 motion estimator. Algorithms, Complexity Analysis and VLSI Architectures for MPEG-4 Motion Estimation is an important introduction to numerous algorithmic, architectural and system design aspects of the multimedia standard MPEG-4. As such, all researchers, students and practitioners working in image processing, video coding or system and VLSI design will find this book of interest.

Book excerpt: The high performance of the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) video standard makes it more suitable for high-definition resolutions. Nevertheless, this encoding performance is coupled with a tremendous encoding complexity compared to the earlier H264 video codec. The HEVC complexity is mainly a return to the motion estimation (ME) module that represents the important part of encoding time which makes several researches turn around the optimization of this module. Some works are interested in hardware solutions exploiting the parallel processing of FPGA, GPU, or other multicore architectures, and other works are focused on software optimizations by inducing fast mode decision algorithms. In this context, this article proposes a fast HEVC encoder configuration to speed up the encoding process. The fast configuration uses different options such as the early skip detection (ESD), the early CU termination (ECU), and the coded block flag (CBF) fast method (CFM) modes. Regarding the algorithm of ME, the diamond search (DS) is used in the encoding process through several video resolutions. A time saving around 46.75% is obtained with an acceptable distortion in terms of video quality and bitrate compared to the reference test model HM.16.2. Our contribution is compared to other works for better evaluation.

Book excerpt: H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 or AVC (advanced video coding) is currently one of the most widely used industry standards for video compression. There are several video codec solutions, both software and hardware, available in the market for H.264. This video compression technology is primarily used in applications such as video conferencing, mobile TV, blu-ray discs, digital television and internet video streaming. This thesis uses the JM 17.2 reference software [15], which is available for all users and can be downloaded from http://iphome.hhi.de/suehring/tml. The software is mainly used for educational purposes; it also includes the reference software manual which has information about installation, compilation and usage. In real time applications such as video streaming and video conferencing it is important that the video encoding/decoding is fast. It is known, that most of the complexity lies in the H.264 encoder, specifically the motion estimation (ME) and mode decision process introduces high computational complexity and takes a lot of CPU (central processing unit) usage. The mode decision process is complex because of variable block sizes (16X16 to 4x4) motion estimation and half and quarter pixel motion compensations. Hence, the objective of this thesis is to reduce the encoding time while maintaining the same quality and efficiency of compression. The Fast adaptive termination (FAT) [30] algorithm is used in the mode decision and motion estimation process. Based on the rate-distortion (RD) cost characteristics all the inter modes are classified as either skip modes or non-skip modes. In order to select the best mode for any macroblock, the minimum RD cost of these two modes is predicted. Further, for skip mode, an early-skip mode detection test is proposed; for non-skip mode a three-stage scheme is proposed to speed up the mode decision process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed technique has good robustness in coding efficiency with different quantization parameters (QP) and various video sequences. It is able to achieve encoding time saving by 47.6% and loss of only 0.01% decrease in structural similarity index matrix (SSIM) with negligible degradation in peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and acceptable increase in bit rate.

A number of video compression techniques and standards have been introduced in the past few years, particularly the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 for interactive multimedia and for digital NTSC and HDTV applications, and H.2611H.263 for video telecommunications. These techniques use motion estimation techniques to reduce the amount of data that is stored and transmitted for each frame. This book is about these motion estimation algorithms, their complexity, implementations, advantages, and drawbacks. First, we present an overview of video compression techniques with an emphasis to techniques that use motion estimation, such as MPEG and H.2611H.263. Then, we give a survey of current motion estimation search algorithms, including the exhaustive search and a number of fast search algorithms. An evaluation of current search algorithms, based on a number of experiments on several test video sequences, is presented as well. The theoretical framework for a new fast search algorithm, Densely-Centered Uniform-P Search (DCUPS), is developed and presented in the book. The complexity of the DCUPS algorithm is comparable to other popular motion estimation techniques, however the algorithm shows superior results in terms of compression ratios and video qUality. We should stress out that these new results, presented in Chapters 4 and 5, have been developed by Joshua Greenberg, as part of his M.Sc. thesis entitled "Densely-Centered Uniform P-Search: A Fast Motion Estimation Algorithm" (FAU, 1996).

Multimedia applications such as video telephony, video conferencing, TV, streaming video/audio online, and many other applications are in demand in video industry. These applications usually require high bandwidth, large storage, and high latency time to send on network. To conserve resources, it is required to compress the video data before sending them to the network by sender side. It is also required to decompress the video data at receiver end before broadcasting. Many different video codec standards such as H.261, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.263, and H.264 are implemented. H.264 is latest international video codec standard. This protocol was developed jointly by International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The objective of this project is to explore different blocks of H.264 in MATLAB environment. This project first briefly describes about encoding and decoding process, and then it discusses more details about different modules of encoder and decoder, and the related algorithms. Finally, it compares the result of different algorithms based on compression ratio, peak signal to noise ratio, time required for encoding process, and storage. A video file is given as input to encoder, the video file is converted to a number of frames using video codec, and fixed size macro block is defined in each frame for encoding process. Motion search algorithm finds motion vector after macro block definition, then compensated image is generated based on reference frame and motion vector by video codec. Redundancy is removed from current frame by subtracting compensated image. Compression of residual information is performed using transformation, quantization, and entropy coder. Compressed data are given as inputs to decoder, and decoder process the image to reconstruct image. To enhance image quality and reduce blocking artifact, the image frame is passed through filter. The project is completed successfully by reconstructing video with reasonable quality.

Book excerpt: With the increasing popularity of technologies such as Internet streaming video and video conferencing, video compression has became an essential component of broadcast and entertainment media. Motion Estimation (ME) and compensation techniques, which can eliminate temporal redundancy between adjacent frames effectively, have been widely applied to popular video compression coding standards such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4. Traditional fast block matching algorithms are easily trapped into the local minima resulting in degradation on video quality to some extent after decoding. Since Evolutionary Computing Techniques are suitable for achieving global optimal solution, these techniques are introduced to do Motion Estimation procedure in this thesis. Zero Motion prejudgement is also included which aims at finding static macroblocks (MB) which do not need to perform remaining search thus reduces the computational cost. Simulation results obtained show that the proposed Clonal Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm given a very good improvement in reducing the computations overhead and achieves very good Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) values, which makes the techniques more efficient than the conventional searching algorithms. To reduce the Motion vector overhead in Bidirectional frame prediction, in this thesis novel Bidirectional Motion Estimation algorithm based on PSO is also proposed and results shows that the proposed method can significantly reduces the computational complexity involved in the Bidirectional frame prediction and also least prediction error in all video sequences.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent demand for high density video, such as ultra high definition (UHD) as well as its distribution over wired and wireless networks, led to the proposal of the latest video encoding standard, high efficiency video coding (HEVC/H.265), by the joint collaborative team on video coding (JCT-VC). HEVC/H.265 achieves a significantly better compression than its predecessor, advanced video coding (AVC/H.264), by roughly 50% for an equivalent visual reproduction quality. How- ever, the improved compression efficiency comes with a drawback, the computational complexity. Since HEVC/H.265 encoding involves enormous computations, a hardware implementation of the encoder is necessary for real-time encoding, in particular for UHD video. The most computationally intensive task in video encoding is motion estimation, which comprises up to 80% of the total time for video encoding. There have been several suggestions for motion-estimation algorithms for reducing the complexity, but many proposed for AVC/H.264 are no longer suitable for HEVC/H.265 due to the underlying coding changes and other complications. Hence, this re- search offers different algorithms and architectures for motion estimation, pro- viding a trade-off between implementation cost and performance. Hardware design is proposed for a full-search motion-estimation algorithm which always comes up with the best results. The memory requirement is reduced to a large extent together with the data bandwidth demand. Another important aspect of real-time video compression, including motion estimation, is the delay of the arithmetic computations. Residue number systems have been used for decades for improving arithmetical operations performance. However, the non-positional nature of an RNS makes it difficult to do some mathematical operations such as sign detection, but it is a vital component for designing motion estimation and other elements of a video processor. The dissertation presents a fast algorithm and its architecture for sign detection, which decreases the area-delay product by 24% compared to designs in the literature. Since the full-search algorithm searches every possible location in a search area, the algorithm involves much computation, therefore fast-search methods are preferred for low-cost solutions. The test zone (TZ) search is a fast-search algorithm and is widely used for HEVC/H.265 as it provides near optimal performance. In this dissertation, a TZ-search hardware architecture is presented, which shows 51% less gate count than existing proposals in the literature and consider- ably fewer memory requirements than most. Further improvement is achieved by developing a fast-search algorithm appropriate for hardware designs, providing an area-efficient, real-time UHD video-encoding-capable design without degradation in quality from the TZ search in HEVC reference software. An angle-restricted test zone (ARTZ) search motion estimation is also proposed for software applications exploiting directional probabilities of the search, saving about 17% to 55% of time for motion estimation compared to the TZ search. The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is a standard method in several previous codecs and it is also a key factor for compression techniques in HEVC/H.265. A variable-length two-dimensional design is proposed for HEVC/H.265, where the architecture is optimised for the most likely block sizes in UHD video, thus eliminating unnecessary complexities found in many designs, and accomplishing more than 60% savings in hardware.
