Book excerpt: A simple family of indirect-transfer trajectories between circular orbits is used to evaluate the mass ratio required to complete round-trip interplanetary missions using low-thrust propulsion systems. These trajectories, although not optimum, yielded very substantial reductions in total round-trip time for Mars missions with moderate increases in initial weight. For a powerplant specific weight [alpha] of 10 pounds per kilowatt of jet power, trip times were reduced from 1200 to 600 days, for a typical manned mission, with an initial weight increase of a factor of two. Comparison with a nuclear rocket with 1000-second specific impulse indicated that the electric-propulsion system required less initial weight for trip times as low as 550 days with [alpha]=10 and as low at 400 days with [alpha]=5 pounds per kilowatt. Further weight reductions would be expected with more nearly optimum trajectories.

Book excerpt: Near-future space missions demand the delivery of massive payloads to deep space destinations. Given foreseeable propulsion technology, this is feasible only if we can design trajectories that require the smallest possible propulsive energy input. This research aims to design interplanetary space missions by using new low-energy trajectory methods that take advantage of natural dynamics in the solar system. This energy efficient trajectory technology, called the Interplanetary Super Highway (IPSH), allows long duration space missions with minimum fuel requirements. To develop the IPSH trajectory design method, invariant manifolds of the three-body problem are used. The invariant manifolds, which are tube-like structures that issue from the periodic orbits around the L1 and L2 Lagrangian points, can be patched together to achieve voyages of immense distances while the spacecraft expends little or no energy. This patched three-body method of trajectory design is fairly well developed for impulsive propulsion. My research is dedicated to advance its capabilities by extending it to continuous, low-thrust, high specific impulse propulsion methods. The IPSH trajectory design method would be useful in designing many types of interplanetary missions. As one of its applications, my research is focused on Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) rendezvous mission design for exploration, mitigation, and mining. Asteroids have many valuable resources such as minerals and volatiles, which can be brought back to Earth or used in space for propulsion systems or space habitats and stations. Transportation to and from asteroids will require relatively massive vehicles capable of sustaining crew for long durations while economizing on propellant mass. Thus, in the design of advanced NEA rendezvous missions, developing new technology for low cost trajectories will play a key role. In a second application study, the solar sail mission for Mars exploration is considered. By using solar radiation pressure, solar sails provide propulsive power. This thrust affects the three-body system dynamics such that the Sun-Mars L1 and L2 Lagrangian points are shifted toward the Sun and the geometry of the invariant manifolds around L1 and L2 points is changed. By taking advantage of these features, a low-thrust trajectory for Mars exploration is developed. The electronic version of this dissertation is accessible from http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/155436

Book excerpt: Nuclear electric propulsion (NEP), compared with chemical and nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP), can effectively deliver the same mass to Mars using much less propellant, consequently requiring less mass delivered to Earth orbit. The lower thrust of NEP requires a spiral trajectory near planetary bodies, which significantly increases the travel time. Although the total travel time is long, the portion of the flight time spent during interplanetary transfer is shorter, because the vehicle is thrusting for much longer periods of time. This has led to the supposition that NEP, although very attractive for cargo missions, is not suitable for piloted missions to Mars. However, with the application of a hybrid application of a hybrid approach to propulsion, the benefits of NEP can be utilized while drastically reducing the overall travel time required. Development of a dual-mode system, which utilizes high-thrust NTP to propel the spacecraft from the planetary gravitational influence and low-thrust NEP to accelerate in interplanetary space, eliminates the spiral trajectory and results in a much faster transit time than could be obtained by either NEP or NTP alone. This results in a mission profile with a lower initial mass in low Earth orbit. In addition, the propulsion system would have the capability to provide electrical power for mission applications.

Book excerpt: "Small spacecrafts requiring small propulsion systems are becoming more popular for low earth orbit. It is important for these research satellites to have accurate guidance and control systems. Small propulsion systems will also be beneficial for multiple small spacecrafts used future exploration expedites beyond low earth orbit. These small spacecrafts benefit from the simplicity of low thrust cold gas propulsion systems. Additionally, large spacecrafts using low thrust, high specific impulse propellants for main propulsion systems, such as ion engines, allow longer and more flexible missions, including earth orbiting spacecraft and interplanetary spacecraft. In order to extent the life of future planetary exploration missions, it becomes necessary to use In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) to be able to extract resources such as water, oxygen, propellants, and building materials form the local target environment. Small free flying vehicles can be used for quickly surveying planetary surfaces in order to search for potential resources locations. These surveying vehicles can also use also use such extracted propellants if their propulsion system is designed for it. Cold gas propulsion provides a flexible system to use locally extracted or manufactured propellants. This dissertation investigates nonlinear feedback control techniques for spacecraft with low thrust, cold gas thrust, and spacecraft with cold gas thrust. A model for a cold gas propulsion systems is developed for designing control systems for multiple types cold gas thrusters. The cold model is also is validated from a cold gas propulsion hardware testing, and a control law is tested on hardware."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinventing Space is the largest global conference and exhibition for one of the space industry’s fastest growing sectors. Over its 82-year history, the British Interplanetary Society has acted as a forum for new and innovative ideas and developments in astronautics, low-cost access and utilization of space. These conference proceedings reflect the work done at the 13th Reinventing Space Conference, the second biggest space event in the UK during 2015. The global economic climate is creating demand to reduce expenditure, leading to new challenges and opportunities in the world’s space industry. The need to create more responsive systems and launchers that are capable of delivering to space quickly, cheaply and reliably has never been more vital. This collection from RIspace brings together industry, agency, government, financiers, academia and end users. It focuses on the commercialization of space and addresses a range of topics including low-cost launch opportunities, the rebirth of constellations, beyond LEO activities and novel technologies. These papers encourage and promote forward-thinking ideas and concepts for the future exploration and utilization of space. The proceedings address: • New ways of doing business in space – how do we make money on affordable and responsive space missions? • Tactical space systems – how do we best serve the needs of defense missions; civilian missions; the needs of emergency responders? • Interplanetary missions – can we use new technology to explore the Solar System at dramatically lower cost? • What are the methods, processes, and technologies that we can use to make major reductions in the cost of space missions? • New application areas for low-cost space systems – which ones can take advantage of newer, much lower-cost systems? • How do we educate and motivate the coming generation, without whom there won’t be a space industry?

Book excerpt: This paper presents several mission designs for heliospheric boundary exploration using spacecraft with low-thrust ion engines as the primary mode of propulsion The mission design goal is to transfer a 200-kg spacecraft to the heliospheric boundary in minimum time. The mission design is a combined trajectory and propulsion system optimization problem. Trajectory design variables include launch date, launch energy, burn and coast arc switch times, thrust steering direction, and planetary flyby conditions. Propulsion system design parameters include input power and specific impulse. Both SEP and NEP spacecraft arc considered and a wide range of launch vehicle options are investigated. Numerical results are presented and comparisons with the all chemical heliospheric missions from Ref 9 are made. Kluever, Craig A. Glenn Research Center NAG3-1731...
