Book Synopsis Inclusive Businesses in Agriculture by : Wytske Chamberlain
Download or read book Inclusive Businesses in Agriculture written by Wytske Chamberlain and published by AFRICAN SUN MeDIA. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿ Inclusive business is hailed as a win-win scenario for the development of poor communities; yet there is little insight into how these inclusive businesses work and, more importantly, for whom. This book aims for a thorough understanding of the range of inclusive businesses in agriculture by examining: the structures they implement, the actors involved, and whether they are effectively inclusive of smallholders. It presents a range of case studies and is therefore empirically based and practically oriented. By offering a critical assessment of inclusive businesses overall, it allows for a better perception of what works where, and under which conditions. It provides useful insights that will benefit smallholders, agri-businesses, support groups, policy makers and investors who are willing to promote more inclusive businesses, that foster a better integration of smallholders into commercial value-chains and a more equitable and sustainable agricultural sector.
Book Synopsis American Agriculture and the Problem of Monopoly by : Jon Lauck
Download or read book American Agriculture and the Problem of Monopoly written by Jon Lauck and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breathtaking number of mergers and joint ventures among agribusiness firms has left independent American farmers facing the power of an increasingly concentrated buying sector. The origin of farmers' concern with such economic concentration dates back to protests against meatpackers and railroads in the late nineteenth century. Jon Lauck examines the dimensions of this problem in the American Midwest in the decades following World War II. He analyzes the nature of competition within meat-packing and grain markets. In addition, he addresses concerns about corporate entry into production agriculture and the potential displacement of a production system defined by independent family farms. Lauck also considers the ability of farmers to organize in order to counter the market power of large-scale agribusiness buyers. He explores the use of farmer cooperatives and other mechanisms which may increase the bargaining power of farmers. The book offers the first serious historical examination of the National Farmers Organization, which fully embraced the bargaining power cause in the postwar period. Lauck finds that independent farmers' attempts at organization have been more successful than previously recognized, but he also shows that their successes have been undermined by the growing concentration and power of agri-business firms, justifying a new approach to antitrust law in agricultural markets.

Book Synopsis Policy framework for contract farming: An alternate to Aarthi system in Pakistan by : Rana, Abdul Wajid
Download or read book Policy framework for contract farming: An alternate to Aarthi system in Pakistan written by Rana, Abdul Wajid and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2023-01-27 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global agricultural production is undergoing a remarkable shift due to globalization and market liberalization (Setboonsarng et al., 2008). Food markets are transforming from a ‘non-programmed to programmed’ regime stemming from overwhelming changes in demand patterns happening concurrently with variations in production dynamics internationally (Oostendorp, 2018). This presents both the challenge and opportunity to change and adapt to this more structured world to reap benefits for both smallholder farmers and exporters (Setboonsarng et al., 2008).
