Download or read book Fantastic Reality written by Jack Conrad and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-06-02 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion, as defined by Marxism, is fantastic reality. Fantastic, not in the trite sense that the claims religion makes about existence are verifiably untrue, unreal or baseless, but in the sense that nature and society are reflected in exaggerated form, as leaping shadows, as symbols or inversions. So religion should not be dismissed as mere false consciousness. Religion reflects something of the real; but, as Jack Conrad's book shows, there is even more to it than that. Religious ideas are not only determined by reality; they can themselves become materially effective. The ideas people have in their heads - especially when mediated through institutions such as churches, mosques and temples - no matter how wrapped up in the godly and seemingly unrelated to the corporeal world, impact on their surroundings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Film Music: A Very Short Introduction focuses on the most central issues in the practice of film music. What is film music? How is it composed? How does film music work? Why does film music work? The rich and deeply moving sounds of film music are as old as cinema. The very first projected moving images were accompanied by music around the globe as a variety of performers-from single piano players to small orchestras-brought images to life. Film music has since become its own industry, an aesthetic platform for expressing creative visions, and a commercial vehicle for generating increased revenue. The second edition updates coverage to 2022 and includes attention to recent developments in global film music, women in film music, and African -American and minority composers"--

Book Synopsis Excavations at Hacılar 1 by : James Mellaart
Download or read book Excavations at Hacılar 1 written by James Mellaart and published by British Institute at Ankara. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This great study is the permanent record and, for much of the material, is now the primary source of the Excavation of Hacılar in south-west Turkey, in the seasons up to 1960, by James Mellaart, then of the British Institute at Ankara. Mellaart’s work on the chalolithic, Neolithic, and aceramic levels of the Hacılar mound has added much to our knowledge of early urban settlement in the Near East and of the establishment of agriculture. In the latter work Mellaart was greatly assisted by Hans Helbaek, who contributes a most important section on the paleoethnobotany, and deduces much of the significance about the plant husbandry of the Neolithic Near East. But Hacılar is famous above all for its plentiful and splendid pottery and pottery figurines; and much of this great work is concerned with their documentation, typology and illustration. Volume one contains text, with just enough illustration of the site and the pottery for general guidance.

Book Synopsis Playing with Leviathan: Interpretation and Reception of Monsters from the Biblical World by : Koert van Bekkum
Download or read book Playing with Leviathan: Interpretation and Reception of Monsters from the Biblical World written by Koert van Bekkum and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient times Leviathan and other monsters from the biblical world symbolize the life-threatening powers in nature and history. They represent the dark aspects of human nature and political entities and reveal the supernatural dimensions of evil. Ancient texts and pictures regarding these monsters reflect an environment of polytheism and religious pluralism. Remarkably, however, the biblical writings and post-biblical traditions use these venerated symbols in portraying God as being sovereign over the entire universe, a theme that is also prominent in the reception of these texts in subsequent contexts. This volume explores this tension and elucidates the theological and cultural meaning of ‘Leviathan’ by studying its ancient Near Eastern background and its attestation in biblical texts, early and rabbinic Judaism, Christian theology, Early Modern art, and film.
