Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism, the world's largest industry, has created a variety of complex political problems, particularly in those countries where the primary attraction of tourism is its potential for accelerating development. The political dimensions that have encouraged tourism in the People's Republic of China, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Nepal, and Bhutan are examined in Linda K. Richter's study, which is based on more than 250 interviews with government officials, travel industry representatives, and media officials. Richter concentrates on the reasons for using tourism to advance government policy objectives and on the many ways political and economic problems can frustrate tourism's contribution to national development. All too often, after the expensive infrastructure is developed, luxury goods imported, and lavish promotional efforts expended, nations are left disillusioned with the economic promise of tourism. Disappointing results are often complicated by a preoccupation with the lure of tourism and an underestimation of the industry's needs and of the political pressures of and on government officials. Encouraging an awareness of the political aspects of tourism, the author advocates greater involvement by social and political scientists in monitoring tourism policy, as well as a restructuring and redesigning of programs in this largest sector of international trade.

In this book, we will discover the life of Sun Tzu/Sunzi (孙子, 545 BC-470 BC), an ancient Chinese military strategist (军事家), statesman (政治家), and the author of the world famous "Sun Tzu's Art of War"《孙子兵法》in the Spring and Autumn Period of China. The Biography series is dedicated to helping Mandarin Chinese learners improve Chinese reading skills. In this series, we will discover lives of some of the most famous people in Chinese history. Each book will introduce a famous Chinese personality whose contributions were immense to shape China's future. The books in Biography series contain numerous lessons in Mandarin Chinese. We start with a brief introduction of the book in the preface (前言), a brief introduction to the person, and continues to dig his life and relevant issues. Each book contains 6 to 10 chapters made of simple Chinese sentences. For the readers' convenience, a comprehensive list of words (vocabulary) has been provided at the beginning of each chapter. The pinyin for the Chinese text is provided after the main text. Further, to enforce a deeper learning, the English interpretation of the Chinese text has been purposely excluded from the books. This would help the readers think deeply about the contents the way native Chinese do. In order to help the students of Mandarin Chinese remember important characters, words, long words, idioms, etc., these entities have been purposely repeated throughout the book, and across the books in the series. Taken together, the books in Biography series will tremendously help readers improve their Chinese reading skills. I blog at: www.QuoraChinese.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There has never been anything quite like the Cultural Revolution, which disrupted life in the People's Republic of China from 1966 to 1976. It wreaked havoc in the world's most populous country, often turning life upside down and undermining the party, government, and army, weakening the economy, society, and culture. Tens of millions were hurt or killed during this period, and relatively few benefited, aside from Mao Zedong and (temporarily) the Gang of Four." "The A to Z of the Chinese Cultural Revolution provides an extensive chronology that traces the events of the revolution and the introduction puts those events in context and explains them. The bulk of the information is provided in numerous dictionary entries on important persons, places, institutions, and movements. The bibliography points to further resources, and the glossary helps those researching in Chinese." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: Since the death of Chairman Mao in 1976, China has embarked upon the Four Modernizations reform programme that has transformed the social, economic and political landscape of the world's most populous nation. Higher education has been ascribed a key supporting role and has itself undergone major reforms. This book looks beyond the articulated goals and accomplishments of the modernization of higher education in China. It delves into the grass roots reality and identifies the true achievements, the unintended outcomes and the major obstacles that still have to be overcome. Incorporating twenty chapters from the new generation of scholars from inside and outside China, Higher Education in Post-Mao China presents in-depth analyses of the impact of educational reforms on tertiary educators, the curriculum, the economic structure, women, and students' values and aspirations. In conveying the Chinese experience of higher education reform over the past two decades, this book makes a major contribution to contemporary sinology and comparative education.

Book excerpt: The paradox of contemporary China - its openness to Western technology, yet its rejection of Western democratic ideals - serves to make China appear remote and inaccessible to those outside. The country's vast area and population only accentuate these difficulties. The Cambridge Handbook of Contemporary China presents topical information on all aspects of Chinese life since 1949, with particular emphasis on the 1980s; its major strength is its contemporary focus and easy-to-use format. Useful maps and tabled statistics accompany the text, which is divided into clearly defined categoried. Designed for students, specialists, educationalists, journalists and those in business and government as well as the general reader, the Handbook provides easy access to information on all areas of Chinese life and is a good starting-point for research.
