Book Synopsis Social Work with Families by : Eileen Younghusband
Download or read book Social Work with Families written by Eileen Younghusband and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1965, this book gathers together some outstanding contributions to various aspects of social work with families. The subject was now more than ever of concern to social workers, as fresh knowledge added to their understanding of the dynamics of family life and interaction. The papers which compose the book were written by well-known authors from both sides of the Atlantic. They are arranged in three sections dealing with: normal and less normal families as a group; with particular crisis situations for children; and with some more theoretical concepts contributing to an understanding of family types. This volume was the first in a series of Readings in Social Work designed to collect together significant articles on different aspects of social work.
Book Synopsis Does Family Preservation Serve a Child's Best Interests? by : Howard Altstein
Download or read book Does Family Preservation Serve a Child's Best Interests? written by Howard Altstein and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new volume, two distinguished professors of social work debate the question of whether family preservation or adoption serves the best interests of abused and neglected children. Arguing the merits of keeping families together whenever possible, Ruth G. McRoy examines the background, theory, and effectiveness of family preservation programs. She provides practical recommendations and pays particular attention to the concerns of African American children. Claiming that there is insufficient evidence that family preservation actually works, Howard Altstein counters that children from truly dysfunctional families should be given the chance for stable lives through adoption rather than left in limbo.
Download or read book Captive Clients written by June Thoburn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980 when about a third of all British children found to be in need of statutory care were living at home ‘on trial’ with parents or relatives. Still under-researched today, little had yet been written about these children, so this book, based on a detailed study of a sample of such children and their families, was welcomed by all who worked in the field of child care. It is especially concerned with the arguments about the ‘least detrimental alternative’ for children at risk. After a summary of the debate about how best to help such children and a survey of the relevant research, tape-recorded comments of parents and social workers are used to describe emotional, health and environmental problems of the families and the help offered at various stages. Comments and discussions are included about the legal and administrative procedures; the social workers’ use of authority, and the parents’ reactions to it; the process of decision making; and the problem of child placement. The book concludes with the author’s suggestions about how the service to such families could be improved.

Book excerpt: The transition from care into adulthood is a difficult step for any young person, but young people leaving care have a high risk of social exclusion, both in terms of material disadvantage and marginalisation. In Young People's Transitions from Care to Adulthood leading academics gather together the latest international research relating to the transition of young people leaving care, outlining and comparing the range of legal and policy frameworks, welfare regimes and innovative practice across 16 countries. The book also highlights the variations that exist between different groups leaving care. Featuring key messages for policy and practice, this book will give academics, practitioners and policymakers valuable insights into how to encourage resilience and improve outcomes for care leavers.
