Dr. Michael K. Onyekwere, SDV The Conflicting Influence of the Christian Messages in Igboland examines how the homogeneity of a people called the Igbos was destroyed. What they held as sacrosanct degenerated under conflicting and pluralistic Christian messages, thereby replicating the Babel experience in Genesis. With this book, Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael K. Onyekwere, SDV wishes to draw readers’ attention to identify the reasons why there is a breakdown of the values that gave identity to Igboland, threatening their identity as one people. He hopes to offer some solutions and leave some room for further work to be done in the area of conflict management and ecumenism.

Book excerpt: It is the conviction of Sacramentum Caritatis as well as the fathers of the Second Vatican Council that active participation at Eucharistic celebration cannot be easily disassociated from active involvement in the Church's mission in the world. This present study in the light of the foregoing presuppositions, exposes some of such challenges confronting the Afro-Igbo Christian, with special focus on the menace of the osu caste system, and proposes ways towards its eradication. One of such ways remains strengthening the Eucharistic celebration through the process of the inculturation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequently overlooked in the search of knowing and acting wisely are some important philosophical and cultural ideas and questions. The kpim of Social Order boldly captures such ideas and questions for awareness through critical thinking. The current volume in the Kpim Book Series makes the point that for a systematic analysis and significance of Social Order to be attained, we need to ask, What is the kpim or central core of Social Order of things? Where does the deepest layer, notion, symbolism, reality and application of social order, programs, human rights, institutions, communities, diplomacy, uprising, social asset, social power, policy action, inter-culturalism, global forces and all else lie? How can we reach and understand the innermost part of Social Order in the modern world? By gathering articles from seasoned, experienced, and emerged scholars from various backgrounds, the book explores deep-rooted questions touching on African context and related societies. The refreshing perspectives, analyses, deep reflections, vigorous arguments, and representations shown by the essays are distinctive and have been referred to as a comprehensive reader in the season of inquiry, meaning and significance of social order in the contemporary time. This is a book no one should ignore. Students, scholars, researchers, universities, colleges, educationists, institutions, policy makers, governments, legislatures, agencies, labour unions, civil society organizations, occupy movements, religious groups, entrepreneurs and the general public will find this book as an asset and a must read. The kpim of Social Order is therefore written out of the critical need to fill the gap for a decisive knowledge society in the modern world.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For not integrating initially some of the good elements in Igbo culture, many Igbo Christians have double personality - Christian personality and traditional personality. They are Christians on Sundays but traditionalists on weekdays. To combat such an anomalous situation, in imitation of Christ's effort at completing what was lacking in the Jewish religion, author Edwin Udoye proposes radical inculturation. His book equally contains many serious theological reflections such that it recommends itself to both theologians and the scholars researching on the religions of the world. Udoye has therefore made a very significant contribution worthy of commendation to both theological and religious studies.

This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church is the Sacrament of Communion with God and unity among all men (Cf. Vatican II doc. L.G. 1). Christ prayed for this unity amongst his adherents in accordance with the unity between him and God the Father (Cf. Jn. 17: 21). This unity will be a sign by which the outside world is to believe in him, hence calling on the Church to rise up to this demand. Efforts were made by the Church to respond to this demand, but it was at the Second Vatican Council that the search for unity became an imperative. With this Council, the Church acknowledged the possibility of Salvation for the members of other Christian traditions and people of other religions. The Church has done a lot to promote this unity, through the teachings of the Magisterium and the activities of the recent Popes. It is then important to study the situation of Nigeria, where this call of the Vatican II, has received scant response both in ecumenical and interreligious relations. Having done pastoral work in places with interdenominational and interreligious rivalry in Nigeria, I became concerned and worried. The present religious crises in Nigeria, has escalated to an issue of grave concern with the Boko Haram insurgency. My motivation is to demonstrate the teaching of the Church regarding interdenominational and interreligious dialogue within Nigeria. There has been no sustained effort to build bridges of religious unity in the country. This research will demonstrate the necessity of ecumenical dialogue as a prelude to interreligious dialogue in Nigeria. On the global level, the need for various religions to foster relationships has become an imperative. Two important bodies CAN and NIREC, will be studied in this book. The work aims at demonstrating the involvement of the Nigerian Christians and Muslims in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. Essentially concerned with the Catholic view of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue & its application to the Nigerian situation. No in-depth study of the religions involved. It is rather the fact of their existence & the role dialogue will play with them to solve religious problems in Nigeria. Though ATR was considered in this work, but the issue of dialogue will only involve Nigerian Muslims & Christians. The research wishes to provoke further study on dialogue between ATR and any of the other two religions. Two issues involved: the reality & importance of the Catholic teachings on ecumenical & interreligious dialogue, and their application to the Nigerian situation. Key methods involved in this work are literary research and analysis, through theological, historical, critical, descriptive, analytical & expository approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tested Faith describes the many obstacles and jubilation experienced by Rita in her journey from Nigeria to United States. In a gripping display of humor and grace, Rita takes us into her childhood in Nigeria, her journey to God’s own country and trials and triumphs. Rita’s faith has been under fire too many times to count and has built in her a strong resilience that can only come from God. She also examines the similarities as well as cultural clashes that have influenced her life in many different ways. Each one of us has something to contribute to life. Regardless of how much we have been beaten down, we can still help others. It is very fulfilling for me to realize that the tragedies in my life have empowered me to make a difference in my life and other people’s lives. We all have a purpose in this life. One’s purpose is unique to that individual alone. Our blessings are equally unique and are ours to grab. I cannot grab your blessings no matter how hard I try; neither can you grab mine. If I live this life without knowing what my purpose is, my purpose will vanquish at the end of my life and cannot be inherited by another person. My purpose is not for my good alone; rather, it is for humanity and to the glory of God. God never takes us anywhere that his grace does not abound for our guidance and protection. This we learn from biblical principles typified in the Bible’s many narratives. Yet in difficult times, we sometimes—perhaps often—ask ourselves: “Will God ever lead us to a place where he cannot protect us? Is anything difficult for God? Should we expect a life without temptation?” These questions undergird my story even if not always explicitly stated in the narrative that has given me great insight and joyous recollection.

Book excerpt: Traditional marriage and Christian marriage rites presently exist as two distinct ceremonies in some parts of Africa. Is there no way of bringing the two together to avoid any form of duplication or multiplication of rite? More so because the Church has always implicitly recognised matrimonial institution as a cultural product. The answer to the above question is located in the whole issue of inculturation. A process that successfully flourished in the Western civilisation and consequently influenced the teaching of the Church on marriage. The answer to our question seeks to establish a marriage rite where couples will genuinely experience the happy marriage between culture and Church. A marriage rite that will fulfil both the traditional and Christian demands.

Book excerpt: A close examination of African cyclic symbols, spatial categories, architecture, visual art and ritual life reveals the cosmo-biological bond connecting all of God's creation. Life is a gift of God, and everyone has the obligation to preserve and prolong it. The way to social harmony lies in going back to our cultural heritage and our past - African communalism, a system built on equity, respect for human rights and the rule of law. Any society - Church or State - that nurtures structural injustice deliberately, keeps the majority in abject poverty and installs mental and physical slavery eventually only prepares a pepper-soup for social violence and internecine civil war. In the words of John F. Kennedy "Those who make dialogue impossible, make violence inevitable."

Book excerpt: This continuation, on a higher level of an earlier work by the author, is an exploration of African cultural heritage; as such it is a journey to the source and fountain of African cultural values. It shows the existence of an African pre-colonial democratic and republican structure of government that is ordered, achievement-oriented, patriotic, and altruistic. Simeon Onyewueke Eboh lectures at the Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), Port Harcourt, Nigeria, in the Department of Canonical Law, specializing in the philosophy of law and public ecclesistical law.

Book excerpt: In the face of the difficult task of inculturating the Christian faith in Igboland, christianizing the Igbo and igbonizing Christianity, this book offers an interesting and inspiring study of Igbo traditional initiation forms in comparison with the Christian sacraments of initiation. Because of its characteristic features and the significant role in Igbo tradition and culture, it proposes traditional Igbo initiation forms as inculturation basis for pastoral catechesis of Christian initiation.
