Book Synopsis Police Misconduct in Brooklyn by : Brian A. Maule
Download or read book Police Misconduct in Brooklyn written by Brian A. Maule and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief explores police misconduct, through the lens of a 5-year study of civil liability cases against the New York Police Department in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York. The confluence of police misconduct and civil liability is an issue of growing concern for many communities throughout the United States. One measure of the severity of these concerns is the increase in the number of lawsuits alleging police misconduct and the civil liability resulting from these lawsuits. Using Brooklyn, New York as a case study, the author of this Brief uses lawsuits that resulted in a settlement or jury award, over a five-year period, as its measure of police misconduct. Police misconduct has many tangible and intangible consequences for a community, such as violations of the law, police brutality, social consequences, and long-term public trust of the police. On a very practical level, as the author demonstrates, the up-front financial costs of prevention, training, and support to curb police misconduct are less expensive than the costs of civil liability payments for lawsuits. This perspective creates a strong argument for policymakers for enhancing police training and police misconduct prevention programs. This work will be of interest to researchers in police studies, as well sociology and public policy.

Book excerpt: Drawing upon a wealth of research evidence, this book examines the historical, structural, cultural and political tensions which exist within the criminal process and the ways in which routine injustices and wrongful convictions are produced. Beginning with an exploration of the miscarriages of justice which prompted the establishment of the RCCJ, the authors examine the role played by institutions and legal actors within the criminal process. Tracking the shift from due process rhetoric to the "new penology" of the risk management of suspect populations, they assess the impact of recent reforms such as the curtailment of the process itself.

Book excerpt: This essential “how not to” guide explains how to act and what to say in the presence of police to avoid unnecessary arrests for petty offenses or mistakes in judgment that can lead to permanent disqualification from jobs, financing, and education. From what to do if a cop asks to search the car to dealing with a racial slur or how to handle a roach in the ashtray, this handbook details the nuances of dealing with the police. This revised and expanded edition of Arrest-Proof Yourself includes more than 100 pages of new information to reflect changes in police technique and “proactive policing.” More than 50 pages are dedicated to weaponry—including how to legally own and handle guns and knives and which firearms to use for self-defense—and updates examine topics such as the current surveillance state and the ability of police to track movements and activities using data drawn from cell phones and computers. Sprinkled with not only moral outrage but also the weird humor that permeates law enforcement, this urgent, eye-opening exposé has stories from 30 years of case files, making it the go-to guide to police procedures for all Americans.
