Book excerpt: From award-winning Lisa Kumar comes a contemporary fantasy romance of a fae shifter driade who hides in plain sight as a businessman and finds the human woman who is his destined mate. When Ashlee Trent meets handsome businessman Kaiden West on a plane to Australia, he eases her fears even as he sets her heart ablaze. After their plane crashes into the ocean and they wash ashore on an island in the South Pacific, danger and intrigue greet them. Too bad most of it seems related to the mystery of who—or just what—Kaiden is. Ashlee must now try to tease apart what is fact or fiction if they're ever to have a future together. Kaiden West, a fae driade-shifter, keeps dozens of secrets about his life and his people—like the truth of their very existence. The faerin hide away who and what they are so they can mesh seamlessly with humans, who'd only show them fear and prejudice if their true natures were revealed. When he meets the lovely but flustered Ashlee, he's drawn to her in a way that he's never experienced before. Though they've survived a plane crash, will the secrets surrounding him not only send their budding relationship into a nosedive but also end their lives? This novella contains adult content and is perfect for fans of Tasha Black, Sarah J. Maas, C.N. Crawford, and Alessa Thorn. This story was previously published as Crashing into You and was also in the anthology Crashing into Love. Kaiden and Ashlee later appear in the Mists of Eria series, so some of The Faerin characters crossover to the Mists series. This crossing-over starts in Bound to the Dark Elf, Book Three of the Mists of Eria series. Keywords: fae hero, human heroine, interspecies relationship, fated mates, fae/human romance, fae/human relationship, action, billionaire hero, forced proximity, secret identity, dangerous fae

Book excerpt: From award-winning author Lisa Kumar comes a new fantasy romance series with dashes of fairytale flair and hints of Bridgerton. In this tale, an ice-cold, cursed fae prince meets his match in a human witch who can't control her magic. Ellohen, the Prince Regent of the Holly Court, has been cursed to feel no emotion for longer than a moment. His kingdom has fallen under the icy pall of coldness. To break the spell, he has to find a female who is capable of loving him. He finds her. She’s human and a dismal witch. Worse, she’s much too sunny and has the audacity to make him feel. It’s much too soon for that. Jane, the impoverished daughter of a squire, never thought she’d be fated to anyone, let alone an otherworldly fae prince. Too bad he's emotionally constipated. Literally. He believes that she can break the spell, but she has huge doubts. Sure, he’s handsome and makes her heart wildly thud. However, most of the time, a wall has more emotional depth. Still, to aid him, she finds herself fighting both her family and his enemies. Both Ellohen and Jane will find out that love makes people do the oddest things—and that they’re no exception. This is the first book in the Brides of the Fae series and contains adult content and language (18+). This series is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Book excerpt: From award-winning author Lisa Kumar comes a contemporary fantasy romance of a banished dark elf with a torturous past who finds his salvation--and the warming of his heart--in a mortal woman. Liar, murderer, traitor … these are all names Eamon has been called, and he wears them with pride. Depending on which side one falls, those titles are only too true. But it's all part of his orchestrated manipulations. Up until the day he was banished from the fae land of Eria, he had schemed for millennia to protect his people, even resorting to murder. As punishment, the Erian king exiled him on Earth to live amongst the lowliest creatures of all — humans. Yet one frustrating and captivating woman shakes his ingrained beliefs to the core. Newly minted physical therapist Caralyn Alberts has been drawing images of a handsome, otherworldly stranger for as long as she can remember. She's chalked it up as a fluke occurrence of life. But when she finds the arrogant Eamon sprawled out on the ice at a local park, her life becomes just as slippery and dangerous as the hauntingly familiar elf. Enemies, friends, and unwilling partners inundate them from all sides. When Eamon's treacherous past makes a reappearance, they'll have to trust each other in order to keep their hearts — and their very lives — intact. This story is the third book in the Mists of Eria series and contains adult content and mentions past physical and sexual abuse. This book was previously published under the same title and has a new cover and fresh edits. The Mists of Eria series will be a crossover with The Faerin series. Kaiden and Ashlee from Falling for the Driade, the first The Faerin book, appear in this story. Both series are perfect for lovers of elf (fae)/human romance. Book excerpt: The first monograph on the works of Patricia Urquiola, whose eclectic approach to product design and architecture has established her as one of the key figures in contemporary design. A superstar in the world of design, Patricia Urquiola’s portfolio of architectural projects and product designs is as diverse as it is intensely personal—from a house for Patrizia Moroso, to the interiors of boutique hotels, to industrial design, and with products that include chairs, watches, and cutlery. Since the opening of her own design practice in Milan in 2001, Urquiola has taken on an ever-expanding number of projects, and has worked with all the great international design houses, including Moroso, De Padova, B&B Italia, Bisazza, Alessi, Driade, and Flos, to name a few. Urquiola’s distinctive works straddle the boundary between architecture and design, the product of a rigorous, interdisciplinary education. Her products and spaces have won her acclaim for combining a bold, passionate imagination with an innate practicality. Drawing inspiration from historical precedent, her designs are often characterized by their clear lines and formal simplicity, and their irrepressible sensuality. This inspiring book captures the fervid energy of Urquiola’s life and work, in an unprecedented and striking design object as innovative and intimate as her body of work.

Book excerpt: A sincere tribute to the world renowned phenomenon of Made in Italy on the occasion of two memorable dates: the fiftieth anniversary of the first Italian fashion show (Florence, 1951) and the fortieth anniversary of the International Furniture Show (Milan, 1961). The book, devoted to fifty years of Italian fashion and design, examines the complex mosaic of Made in Italy divided into different aspects and themes: -- Belvedere: an overview of the cultural and emotional relationship that exists between certain great foreign artists (including Luciano Fabro, Nam June Paik, Anish Kapoor, Joseph Kosuth, Panamarenko, Julian Schnabel) and Italy. -- Memory: a spectacular and historic interpretation of forty years of Italian life divided into four decades. Protagonists of the design and fashion worlds have been chosen for each decade: from Gio Ponti and Roberto Capucci (1951-1961) to Ettore Sottsass and Gianni Versace (1981-1991). -- Brokenhaus: an original mass of clothes and objects of fashion and design of the last 50 years, including Brionvega TV, Olivetti typewriters and Bialetti coffee-makers. -- Taste: another major "Italian-made" reality, gastronomy, is unconventionally interpreted by the designer Gaetano Pesce and by Andrea Pezzi, icon of teen-age pop culture. -- Allegory: a metaphor of the triumph of "Italian-made" goods to represent the decade 1991-2001, dedicated to all the leading figures in Italian design and fashion today, from Philippe Starck and Vico Magistretti to Gaetano Pesce, from Armani and Gucci to Dolce e Gabbana.

Book excerpt: At the summit of his power, John Law was the most famous man in Europe. Born in Scotland in 1671, he was convicted of murder in London and, after his escape from prison, fled Scotland for the mainland when Union with England brought with it a warrant for his arrest. On the continent he lurched from one money-making scheme to the next - selling insurance against losing lottery tickets in Holland, advising the Duke of Savoy - amassing a fortune of some £80,000. But for his next trick he had grander ambitions. When Louis XIV died, leaving a thoroughly bankrupt France to his five-year-old heir, Law gained the ear of the Regent, Philippe D'Orleans. In the years that followed, Law's financial wizardry transformed the fortunes of France, enriching speculators and investors across the continent, and he was made Controller-General of Finances, effectively becoming the French Prime Minister. But the fall from grace that was to follow was every bit as spectacular as his meteoric rise. John Law, by a biographer of Adam Smith and the author of Frozen Desire and Capital of the Mind, dramatises the life of one of the most inventive financiers in history, a man who was born before his time and in whose day the word millionaire came to be coined.

It is free to read on the Oxford Academic platform and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. During a crucial period in opera's development as a genre and as a business, the flamboyantly libertine Spanish aristocrat Gaspar de Haro y Guzm?n (1629-87), Marqu?s de Heliche and del Carpio, influenced operatic practices and productions for both Italian and Hispanic operas. A voracious collector of books and antiquities and famed connoisseur of visual art, the marqu?s financed operas in both Spain and Italy and further shaped them through his ideas, energy, and politics. His legacy also brought forth the first operas of the Americas, as posthumous revivals of the operatic genres he nurtured appeared in the Americas less than fifteen years after his death. In this book, author Louise K. Stein follows the trajectory of this first operatic producer to have shaped opera in two different worlds--Europe and the Americas--and in doing so, advances our musical and historical understanding of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century opera and cultural encounter. Each chapter focuses on different productions spearheaded by the Marqu?s in Madrid, Rome, and Naples during his lifetime, with the final chapter considering how his influence continued in operatic productions in Lima, Mexico City, and other regions of New Spain after his death. Alongside this portrait of the distinguish patron of the arts, Stein shows how conventions of musical dramaturgy for both private and commercial opera were developed within a consistent politics of production across the far-flung administrative centers of the Spanish empire in the years 1650-1730. She reveals the place of opera within the siglo de oro (Golden Age) of Hispanic theatre and delves deeply into how the Marqu?s became the principal patron of Alessandro Scarlatti in Italy after his time in Rome, sparking a reliable production system for Italian opera in Naples. Stein also addresses gendered performance--how beliefs about female fertility conditioned listeners and shaped the operatic genre--and advances the concept of the "womanly voice" in the first extant Hispanic operas, the Italian operas produced in Naples between 1683 and 1687, and the first operas of the Americas from 1701 to 1730.
