Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book hails from decades of challenging trial-and-error work, abundant reading, and an enduring obligation to ministers, activists, and unsung lay heroes whose legacies matter. As there is little that actually addresses the elusive meanings, if not the dangers inherent in pursuing alleged spoils of "success," it is kairos time. Seemingly scarce resources and competition to make and maintain ministries in the city challenge those of us in the field, or on the sidelines, to speak, write, and communicate clearly, and convincingly--not only for ourselves and our "people," past and present, but for those who come along soon to receive the baton or wear the mantle. Concretely narrated, with unique case studies, a cast of dozens contribute their earthy, earnest testimonies and are, at long last, energetically affirmed. Specifically, this work proffers constructive attention to the critical cautions concerning subtle temptations to "succeed," including: commodification, cooptation, communalism, clientelism, and cowardice--and, not bailing on fierce charity-justice tensions (with benevolence protectively dominant). Narrative analysis and biography-as-theology, social ethics, biblical theology, and recent church history give apt attention to how a compelling case is possible for success, if justice is practiced, given a hopeful realism and perspective of prophetic eschatology.

Book excerpt: In Final Rounds, James Dodson told the poignant story of the golf trip of a lifetime with his terminally ill father. Now, armed with a fly-fishing rod and reel, he embarks with his seven-year-old daughter on an equally memorable journey across America in search of clear-running streams, swift elusive fish, and the eternal truths that only nature can provide. It has been said that life is what happens while you're waiting to go fishing. Only weeks after his eleven-year marriage abruptly ended in an amicable divorce, James Dodson decided to go on a fly-fishing pilgrimage west. His goal: to heal his wounded spirit and explain as best he could the vagaries of life and love to his beautiful, precocious seven-year-old daughter, Maggie. With his beat-up truck, Old Blue, and his aging retriever, Amos, Dodson and Maggie travel without plans or reservations, following where the spirit--and the lure of America's mighty rivers--leads them, on their way to one of America's grandest treasures: Yellowstone National Park. On the way, Dodson discovers a great deal about fishing, about America, and about the special relationship that exists only between a father and daughter. They travel from the Adirondacks, once a fly-angler's haven, to the mist-shrouded Niagara Falls. From the Michigan lakes where Ernest Hemingway roamed as a boy to small-town county fairs. From the majesty of Mount Rushmore to the mysticism of Harney's Peak, where Black Elk had his legendary visions, to finally the fly-fisherman's paradise of the San Juan River. Together father and daughter are bound by a tie as resilient and unpredictable as a fly-fisherman's line. For as the emotional waters in which they fish become ever more turbulent, Maggie's unspoken feelings of grief, anger, and blame begin to surface--a depth of hurt that forces Dodson to face his own unacknowledged pain and, worse, leaves him feeling helpless to make everything all right in his daughter's life again. Yet if fly-fishing has taught James Dodson anything, it is the rewards of patience, of following the wisdom of the course of the stream, the unexpected revelations reflected in still pools, and, of course, an abiding belief in plain dumb luck. With a little of each, these faithful travelers will find their way home again. Literate, honest, and deeply observant, Faithful Travelers is a beautiful meditation on the bond between parent and child and the nature of love and loss. In Faithful Travelers, James Dodson proves that sometimes life isn't what happens while you're waiting to go fishing: sometimes it happens while you're there.

Book excerpt: The Always Faithful part of the title has arisen from the Marine Corps motto Semper Fidelis. Always Faithful: A Marine's Tale gives a realistic view of the anguish a young person endures in becoming a United States Marine, as well as the trauma of war. The story also helps the reader understand a certain Italian faction, as well as the Italian-American culture as it pertains to the Goomba perspective. It is not a story about the Marine Corps, nor a story about the Mob. It is simply about an eighteen year old young man of Italian descent from Trenton, New Jersey whose life is touched by both. For this teen, there is more to life than the customary demands placed on people his age. These demands put him on a rollercoaster ride destined to resolve uncertainty. Peer pressure sets the main character, Joseph Mommalione on a journey, which tests, his honor in the Marines, loyalty to strong Italian family traditions, and ability to bear confinement. Joe Momma's year long venture before, during, and after the 1991 Gulf War shows the way to heroism, imprisonment, vengeance, and love. He goes from the typical teen back on the block to the traumatic experience of Marine boot camp, to the theatre of war where his few days of combat lead to heroism and everlasting friendship with two Marines. After the war, he and his comrades are recuperating from their wounds back in New Jersey while Joe Momma is being groomed into his uncle's crime family. Circumstances land Joe Momma in the county jail where he is threatened by the FBI to reveal information about his mob connections. Rather than face three to five years in the Trenton State Penitentiary, he plans and successfully completes a daring escape from jail with the help of the two former Marines and his mentor Carmine Scalia, who is also a former Marine. Before he blends into the criminal underworld, he seeks revenge on the cop who put him behind bars. In doing so, he discovers a plot by a Tucci Crime Family crew boss to destroy him. Although the story portrays an adolescent from Trenton, New Jersey, it is targeted toward a mature audience and will touch the hearts of men and women alike. While the book is Marine hardcore, as well as street savvy, it is sensitive to family values and portrays heroic deeds. The book is easy reading, full of wit, sorrow, happiness, conflict, compassion, romance, crime, and adventure including a twist which will capture one's interest from beginning to end.

Book excerpt: A few words from Beth Moore: "About ten years ago God began leading me to take a far more active role in missions . . . primarily through daily intercession. I recall wondering, How does a person approach praying for the entire world? God graciously placed tools in my hands along the way, but I can assure you I've never seen one quite like [Prayers for the Faithful]. Mary Ann Bridgwater has done her homework. This guide is packed full of Scripture. All we need to do is add some faith, open our mouths and pray them! The testimonies she has included will cause our fellow servants on the field to become more than names to you. Their stories and requests will steal your heart and hopefully some of your prayer time . . . Thank you, Mary Ann, for providing us with the very words of God to pray over His servants. Heaven alone will bear witness of its profound harvest." If you've been wanting to get more involved in the work being done by missionaries around the world, Prayers for the Faithful is the answer for you--a complete guide to devoting daily, deliberate prayer into everything that matters most to missionaries: their ministries, their families, their motivations and desires, even their parents and relatives back home. It's an opportunity to make your prayers match the heartbeat of God, while helping to accomplish His work in hearts a world away. Whether individually, in small groups, or as an entire churchwide emphasis, let this inspired plan of intercession lead you where you've always wanted your prayer life to go--somewhere far beyond you!

Book excerpt: Faithful As She Fades is the first-person account of Robert Fischbach's heartbreaking journey as a caregiver to his longtime beloved wife throughout her relentless battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Having vowed to her that he would refrain from putting her in a facility, Bob found himself as the sole caretaker (until well into his wife's illness) of a woman with whom he had raised two children and shared a long and happy marriage. He had to watch, helpless, as FTD stole his wife's speech, personality, and essence, by degrees over a devastating eight-and-a-half-year nightmare. From growing up Jewish in New York, to meeting his Janie and raising their two sons, Fischbach takes the reader on a heartfelt, emotional, sometimes funny and always moving journey through the decades he spent with his wife--and then through the near-decade in which he slowly had to let her go. A story of devastating loss, everyday heroism, resilience and faithfulness, this book is an insider's look into one of the most terrible illnesses with which a person can be afflicted. It is also a testament to the power of love and faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two things you should know about this book are the fact that if you have ever wanted an answer to breaking out of your poverty, low self-esteem, or addiction, you will find it here. I have drawn on my experience of spending many years dealing with these issues for solutions as to how they can be successfully conquered. I am a living testimony that where the mind and spirit leads, the body will follow, and that we can always do better than we know. Secondly, when I decided to publish this book, I made up my mind that I wasn't going to try and sell it to anyone who isn't tired of being "sick and tired" and who hasn't reached the point that they can't go on doing the same old thing, expecting different results. I know that when people get sick enough of meeting with failure and disappointment you won't have to go looking for them with a cure; they will come looking for you. I am convinced that as bad as things are for many of us that our suffering is working to drive us to God and the solutions He has enabled concerned people to develop. This book is for those who want to do something different than they have always done to get something different than they have always had. It may hurt the sale of this book, but I don't encourage you to buy it if you are not ready to do some serious work on the problem areas of your life and are tired of making excuses for your life not getting better if you are not doing anything to make it better. This book is not for your shelf; it is to be used in fixing anything broken in your life, mind, or spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for much of the nineteenth century as "the ever-faithful isle," Cuba did not earn its independence from Spain until 1898, long after most American colonies had achieved emancipation from European rule. In this groundbreaking history, David Sartorius explores the relationship between political allegiance and race in nineteenth-century Cuba. Challenging assumptions that loyalty to the Spanish empire was the exclusive province of the white Cuban elite, he examines the free and enslaved people of African descent who actively supported colonialism. By claiming loyalty, many black and mulatto Cubans attained some degree of social mobility, legal freedom, and political inclusion in a world where hierarchy and inequality were the fundamental lineaments of colonial subjectivity. Sartorius explores Cuba's battlefields, plantations, and meeting halls to consider the goals and limits of loyalty. In the process, he makes a bold call for fresh perspectives on imperial ideologies of race and on the rich political history of the African diaspora.

Book excerpt: With the explosive firepower of his military classics Marine Sniper and Silent Warrior, Charles Henderson gives a startlingly realistic account of the Marines’ hellish introduction to a new kind of warfare in Vietnam—and the raw truth about how it produced a new kind of American soldier. In 1965, the U.S. Marines landed in Vietnam. It was supposed to be just another deployment. America was going to do what the French before them could not—clean up that dirty little brush war in South Vietnam. But, new to the front lines, the Marines were experiencing the smoke and bloodshed of war for the first time. That year, the war’s carnage became frighteningly real to television audiences back home—but the Marines were already displaying the fighting courage of experienced heroes. They had quickly learned the first rule of combat: Kill or be killed.

Book excerpt: The best description of this book is the word “parable” - a short story designed to illustrate some truth, conveying meaning indirectly by the use of comparison or analogy. Most of the articles I've written in this book are insights gained over time from life's circumstances - either firsthand or observations of others' lives - valuable lessons worth sharing. Life throws experiences at us to help us grow, develop character and over time they also prove certain principles to be true. We are often surrounded by people with opinions, and everyone has a right to their opinion, but opinions vary. I usually don't consider opinions very valuable - depending on whose they are, of course. But the truth found within a principle stands the test of time! The articles in this book are not opinions - they represent principles. They are stories that illustrate truth to straighten the path and ease the grade of the hill along this journey.
