Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faithful Rebecca will not easily be forgotten. In this wildly erotic, magical and comic novel of fast-paced suspense, Rebecca, a modern day Scarlett O'Hara from New York City, embarks on an impassioned search for her infant daughter, Lily, and Lily's kidnapper. Her quest leads to a mountaintop community of women emulating mythical Amazon warriors where Rebecca is reunited with both Lily, being raised as an Amazon, and Sagana, formerly Rebecca's devoted best friend and now the passionate, fierce, and beautiful Amazon queen. She also meets the equally memorable Howard Geller, a wisecracking, romantic, runaway teenager living on the fringe of the community. After a mysterious mountain, these characters' stories merge in an exciting climax on Manhattan's lower east side. This many-leveled contemporary fable incorporates such motifs as personal ads and female bodybuilding, while asking difficult questions about women's roles as friends, lovers, mothers, and daughters.
Book Synopsis Black Women, Citizenship, and the Making of Modern Cuba by : Takkara K. Brunson
Download or read book Black Women, Citizenship, and the Making of Modern Cuba written by Takkara K. Brunson and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illuminating the activism of Black women during Cuba’s prerevolutionary period Association of Black Women Historians Letitia Woods Brown Book Prize In Black Women, Citizenship, and the Making of Modern Cuba, Takkara Brunson traces how women of African descent battled exclusion on multiple fronts and played an important role in forging a modern democracy. Brunson takes a much-needed intersectional approach to the political history of the era, examining how Black women’s engagement with questions of Cuban citizenship intersected with racial prejudice, gender norms, and sexual politics, incorporating Afro-diasporic and Latin American feminist perspectives. Brunson demonstrates that between the 1886 abolition of slavery in Cuba and the 1959 Revolution, Black women—without formal political power—navigated political movements in their efforts to create a more just society. She examines how women helped build a Black public sphere as they claimed moral respectability and sought racial integration. She reveals how Black women entered into national women’s organizations, labor unions, and political parties to bring about legal reforms. Brunson shows how women of African descent achieved individual victories as part of a collective struggle for social justice; in doing so, she highlights how racism and sexism persisted even as legal definitions of Cuban citizenship evolved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcards From Hell is a collection of ten short horror stories from Don Darrin, the author of Harmonyville. The stories visit the towns surrounding Harmonyville, and each has a unique aspect of horror. In the title story, Postcards From Hell, a man unknowingly makes a deal with a demon and the price might be too high. In Inheritance, a man inherits a house he was frightened of as a child. Was it all in his head or is something else at work there? In Lot Lizard, a new truck driver learns the ways of a truck stop and its local prostitute. Saving Time is about a loving husband who was known for always being late as a child. Now as an adult can he make it on time? In Rabid a family’s annual cabin trip becomes deadly, thanks to a research raccoon. In Gulls, a lonely simpleton spends his lunch with increasingly daring seagulls. In Bargain Buy, a man invites his friends to help him paint his new house that he got a great deal on. There may be a reason it was so cheap though. In The Red, a rural town has a secret lurking in the local forest. Nobody goes in The Red. In Nimbus, a small town starts to have strange happenings after a suspicious rain cloud arrives. In Seed, a man believes he’s been cursed after he wrongs a supposed witch. Postcards From Hell has something for everyone. Which story will haunt you?
