Book Synopsis Love, Power, and Gender in Seventeenth-Century French Fairy Tales by : Bronwyn Reddan
Download or read book Love, Power, and Gender in Seventeenth-Century French Fairy Tales written by Bronwyn Reddan and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love is a key ingredient in the stereotypical fairy-tale ending in which everyone lives happily ever after. This romantic formula continues to influence contemporary ideas about love and marriage, but it ignores the history of love as an emotion that shapes and is shaped by hierarchies of power including gender, class, education, and social status. This interdisciplinary study questions the idealization of love as the ultimate happy ending by showing how the conteuses, the women writers who dominated the first French fairy-tale vogue in the 1690s, used the fairy-tale genre to critique the power dynamics of courtship and marriage. Their tales do not sit comfortably in the fairy-tale canon as they explore the good, the bad, and the ugly effects of love and marriage on the lives of their heroines. Bronwyn Reddan argues that the conteuses' scripts for love emphasize the importance of gender in determining the "right" way to love in seventeenth-century France. Their version of fairy-tale love is historical and contingent rather than universal and timeless. This conversation about love compels revision of the happily-ever-after narrative and offers incisive commentary on the gendered scripts for the performance of love in courtship and marriage in seventeenth-century France.

All my life I knew I'd come of age during the Hundred Year Reaping. According to the ridiculous treaty, two human girls are sent to the faelands as brides for the fearsome fae king and his devilish younger brother. Not me. I was supposed to be safe. Two girls were chosen from my village already. But when they are executed for offending the king, my sister and I are sent in their place. What a mess. Then again, maybe it's not so bad. The younger brother I'm paired with doesn't seem as monstrous as I'd expected. He's delightfully handsome too. But nothing compares to the chilling, dangerous beauty of the fae king. And when my sister flees the castle and her terrifying husband-to-be, I'm left to marry him instead. If I go through with this, I might not survive my wedding night. If I don't, no one is safe, neither human nor fae. An ancient war will return, bringing devastation we haven't seen in a thousand years. Can I sacrifice myself for the good of my people? Or will a dangerous desire be the death of me first? If I don't lose my heart, the king will certainly lose his. I'll carve it out with an iron blade if I have to. Book Synopsis Fairy Tales in Contemporary American Culture by : Kate Christine Moore Koppy
Download or read book Fairy Tales in Contemporary American Culture written by Kate Christine Moore Koppy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, American culture is experiencing a profound shift toward pluralism and secularization. In Fairy Tales in Contemporary American Culture: How We Hate to Love Them, Kate Koppy argues that the increasing popularity and presence of fairy tales within American culture is both indicative of and contributing to this shift. By analyzing contemporary fairy tale texts as both new versions in a particular tale type and as wholly new fairy-tale pastiches, Koppy shows that fairy tales have become a key part of American secular scripture, a corpus of shared stories that work to maintain a sense of community among diverse audiences in the United States, as much as biblical scripture and associated texts used to.
Download or read book Courtly Love written by Jean Markale and published by Inner Traditions / Bear & Co. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive examination of the rituals and philosophies that created and sustained medieval troubadour culture • Debunks the myth of the platonic nature of courtly love, showing the many sexual similarities to the Tantric practices of India • Reveals how the roots of courtly love go back to the matriarchal cultures of neolithic times The widespread turmoil that shook Western Europe as it entered the new millennium with the year 1000 prompted a vast reevaluation of the chief tenets of society. Foremost among these was a new way of looking at love and the place held by women in society. The Christian-inspired tradition that at best viewed women with contempt--and often with outright fear and loathing--was replaced by a new perspective, one in which women enjoyed a central role as the inspiration for all male action. For several hundred years courtly love, with its emphasis on adultery, carnal pleasures, and the power of the feminine, dominated European culture despite its flouting of conventional Christian morality. Medieval historians by and large have tended to regard courtly love as a sterile parlor game for the upper classes. To the contrary, Jean Markale shows that the stakes were much higher: the roots of the ritual re-created here go all the way back to the great mother goddess. In addition, the platonic nature attributed to these relationships is based on a misunderstanding of courtly love; underneath the refined poetry of the troubadours' verses flourished a system of sexual initiation that rivaled Indian Tantra.

Book Synopsis Blue Tear Called Love by : Irena Docheva
Download or read book Blue Tear Called Love written by Irena Docheva and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After years of wandering around the world of love, I found the truth about it. I met face-to-face with that wonderful fairy Love, and she shared with me that despite the pain that was tearing her apart, she is very happy and didn't want to part with it. In my fantasy, that fairy was standing smiling among the deserted sands and was holding a heart in love. There was blood dripping from her hands, but she looked hard and firm. She split the heart in two and threw the two halves away from her. They fell with ominous strength on the glowing sand, started burning, and burned away. The fairy told me that that had been my heart, and that this evil destiny awaited it. She opened her scarlet lips and said that love hurts and it was like a cloud, which carried many tears to my eyes in love. Nevertheless, I decided to follow my heart, and it was saying: "When Love looks you in the eyes, you will know, I will tell you, and then you take it right away, hold it tight, hide it here with me, to be happy.'"
