Book Synopsis Mapping The Faerie Queene by : Wayne Erickson
Download or read book Mapping The Faerie Queene written by Wayne Erickson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the Faerie Queene's setting, examining Spenser's quest structures and his ideas about epic, romance, and history. Critics almost invariably treat Spenser's Faeryland as coextensive with the world of the poem, but this is not the case; rather, Faeryland is part of an epic cosmos reaching from heaven and the abode of the classical deities to demonic underground realms. Spenser situates Faeryland within a specific spatial and temporal terrestrial geography in which locations outside Faeryland represent various heroic settings in political history. The politico-historical world built around Faeryland is ripe for analysis by contemporary historicist critics. Spenser uses political geography, in conjunction with the time-inclusive medium of Faeryland, to coordinate several transhistorical quests that create a pattern of temporal mediations among sixth-century British, 16th-century English, and biblical and prophetic versions of history. He juxtaposes chronicle history, empirical historiography, and cultural myth while manipulating genre to create a world capable of accommodating his grand romantic epic design. In mapping the world of The Faerie Queene, the book provides a widened context for Spenser's quest structures, a significant contribution to the study of the poem's relation to history, and a new perspective from which to view Spenser's debts to classical epic, Italian romantic epic, and his native medieval inheritance. Book Synopsis The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain by : Mark Twain
Download or read book The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain written by Mark Twain and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These sixty satirical, rollicking, uproarious tales by the greatest yarn-spinner in our literary history are as fresh and vivid as ever more than a century after their author’s death. Mark Twain’s famous novels Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn have long been hailed as major achievements, but the father of American literature also made his mark as a master of the humorous short story. All the tales he wrote over the course of his lengthy career are gathered here, including such immortal classics as “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” “The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg," “The Diary of Adam and Eve,” and “The $30,000 Bequest.” Twain’s inimitable wit, his nimble plotting, and his unerring insight into human nature are on full display in these wonderfully entertaining stories.

Book Synopsis Selected Musical Plays by Noël Coward: A Critical Anthology by : Noël Coward
Download or read book Selected Musical Plays by Noël Coward: A Critical Anthology written by Noël Coward and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Noël Coward's work as playwright, songwriter and actor has long been celebrated, his contributions to the British musical have largely been forgotten. Selected Musical Plays by Noël Coward: A Critical Anthology rectifies this omission from the musical theatre landscape, demonstrating how Coward's adaptability, creativity, and myriad of styles is imitated in the incredible musicals he authored. From flop shows at Drury Lane with Mary Martin through to his Broadway hits with Elaine Stritch, this anthology chronicles the variety of styles written by Coward, from revue to musical comedy to operetta. The works in this volume provide a contemporary critical introduction that illustrates the breadth and depth of his work, and highlighting the diverse identities of the collaborators and performers with whom he worked. Though the style of these works varies, they are linked together by his creative thread, and his ability to craft barbed and witty observations of his social world. A timely portrait of Coward's oeuvre and its lasting influence on the wider world of the British musical, Selected Musical Plays by Noël Coward contains previously unpublished musical plays by a central figure in theatre history, collected together with critical apparatus for students, scholars, and fans.
