Book Synopsis The Island of Happiness by : Madame d'Aulnoy
Download or read book The Island of Happiness written by Madame d'Aulnoy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book the visual artist Natalie Frank interprets eight tales by Madame d'Aulnoy, a seventeenth-century French pioneer of the fairy-tale genre. D'Aulnoy is thought to have influenced the development of the literary fairy tale in France and beyond. The tales were written as entertainment for the salons of the time: many contain subtle criticisms of French royalty and aristocrats as well as of enforced social and sexual roles. Her work has been translated into English in the past, but rarely outside of anthologies that include other authors. Frank chose to make d'Aulnoy's tales the subject of this book because "many of her heroines' journeys and conflicts have not changed," she writes. "A suitor's arrogance can destroy happiness; the power of kindness and wiliness, combined with perseverance, triumphs; jealousy poisons families and separates lovers." Frank is deeply interested in the role of women in fairy tales. D'Aulnoy, she says, used her talent to both imagine and inhabit worlds in which women could exercise agency. Aiming to "bridge the gap between fine art and illustration," Frank brings a striking, distinctive style to d'Aulnoy's tales through an integration of art and text. Allegorical, energetic, sometimes grotesque, Frank's art is the focus of this book, accompanied by contemporary English translations of the tales by Jack Zipes, a renowned expert on fairy tales. The book also includes a short essay by the artist on her approach to illustrating the tales, and a general introduction to d'Aulnoy and her work by Zipes"--

Book Synopsis Encounters in the Arts, Literature, and Philosophy by : Jérôme Brillaud
Download or read book Encounters in the Arts, Literature, and Philosophy written by Jérôme Brillaud and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encounters in the Arts, Literature, and Philosophy focuses on chance and scripted encounters as sites of tensions and alliances where new forms, ideas, meanings, interpretations, and theories can emerge. By moving beyond the realm of traditional hermeneutics, Jérôme Brillaud and Virginie Greene have compiled a volume that vitally illustrates how reading encounters represented in artefacts, texts, and films is a vibrant and dynamic mode of encountering and interpreting. With contributions from esteemed academics such as Christie McDonald, Pierre Saint-Amand, Susan Suleiman, and Jean-Jacques Nattiez, this book is a multidisciplinary collaboration between scholars from a range of disciplines including philosophy, literature, musicology, and film studies. It uses examples chiefly from French culture and covers the Early Modern era to the twentieth century, while providing a thorough and representative array of theoretical and hermeneutical approaches.

Book excerpt: In the undergrowth of the Australian bush, well hidden, live eight different tribes of fairies. Like the fairies of other lands, they have survived for millennia. The role of these elusive creatures is to keep the balance of nature, protecting the flowers that seed our planet. Fairies are peaceful creatures who understand the precious value of plants. They are themselves vegetarians, and do not hurt or eat other living creatures. Each tribe of fairies has its own magical abilities. Pearl fairies can sing melody spells. Fire fairies throw sparks and must learn as youngsters to control fire. Shadow fairies are incredibly fast. This story follows the lives of a family of fairies whose fortunes suddenly change, forcing them to become leaders in their Kingdom. Fairy potions and spells combine with love, courage and loyalty to guide the fairies to their destiny as not only protectors of nature but of the entire fairy Kingdom. Together, this fairy family must combine their talents to face an evil enemy. They must adapt and fight for their very survival.
