Book excerpt: A shattering tale of tragedy and terror featuring Seattle detective J.P. Beaumont. A desperate father’s search for his runaway daughter has led him to the last place he ever expected to find her: backstage at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. But the murders in this dazzling world of make-believe are no mere stagecraft, and the blood is all too real. The hunt for his child has plunged former Seattle Homicide Detective J.P. Beaumont into a bone-chilling drama of revenge, greed, and butchery, where innocents are made to suffer in perverse and terrible ways. And many more young lives are at stake, unless he can uncover the villain of the piece before the final, deadly curtain falls.

This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failure to Appear: Resistance, Identity and Loss is a memoir about a gay woman of conscience who became a fugitive, on the run for over nineteen years using several fake names. This book is a gripping story about finding your real self and your sexual truth. It delves into family rejection for being a lesbian, the price of ideals, lost love, the agony of an underground existence, and personal renewal. The final, suspenseful chapters describe the author's voluntary surrender and re-sentencing. It takes place in the turbulent late sixties through the late eighties, against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, the Nixon and Reagan years, the women's and gay liberation movements, and the AIDS crisis. This story is very relevant to our time, as injustice and bigotry remain fundamental societal ills. As one reader described it, "I couldn't put it down. It has it all: coming of age, coming out, sex scenes, close calls, and gripping life choices. I sunk deeper under my comforter and deeper into an amazing true story."

As a deputy coroner, caring for the dead, he speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves. He prides himself on an unflinching commitment to the truth. Even when it gets him into trouble. Then, while working the murder scene, Clay is horrified to discover a link to his brother, Luke. Horrified. But not surprised. Luke is fresh out of prison and struggling to stay on the straight and narrow. And now he’s gone AWOL. The race is on for Clay to find him before anyone else can. Confronted with Luke’s legacy of violence, Clay is forced to reckon with his own suspicions, resentments, and loyalties. Is his brother a killer? Or could he be the victim in all of this, too? This is Jonathan and Jesse Kellerman at their most affecting and page-turning—a harrowing collision of family, revenge, and murder.
Book Synopsis The Ferguson Report: An Erasure by : Nicole Sealey
Download or read book The Ferguson Report: An Erasure written by Nicole Sealey and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORKER BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • A meditation on our times, cast through a reconsideration of the Justice Department's investigation of the Ferguson Police Department In August 2014, Michael Brown—a young, unarmed Black man—was shot to death by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. What followed was a period of protests and turmoil, culminating in an extensive report that was filed by the Department of Justice detailing biased policing and court practices in the city. It is a document that exposes the racist policies and procedures that have become commonplace—from disproportionate arrest rates, to flagrant violence directed at the Black community. It is a report that remains as disheartening as it is damning. Now, award-winning poet Nicole Sealey revisits the investigation in a book that redacts the report, an act of erasure that reimagines the original text as it strips it away. While the full document is visible in the background—weighing heavily on the language Sealey has preserved—it gives shape and disturbing context to what remains. Illuminating what it means to live in this frightening age, and what it means to bear witness, The Ferguson Report: An Erasure is an engrossing meditation on one of the most important texts of our time.

Book Synopsis Comparison of Gulf International Arbitration Rules by : Dr. Habib Al Mulla
Download or read book Comparison of Gulf International Arbitration Rules written by Dr. Habib Al Mulla and published by Juris Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparison of Gulf International Arbitration Rules has been inspired by its sister publications, Comparison of Asian International Arbitration Rules and Comparison of International Arbitration Rules, which were prepared by Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and published by Juris Publishing in 2003 and 2008 respectively. This volume sets forth the main arbitration rules and regulations available in the Middle East region and provides a basis of comparison on their efficiency and cost-effectiveness Due to the great number of arbitration institutions that have been forming across the Middle East over the past couple of decades the present overview is confined to the most commonly-used sets of rules in the Gulf region: the Arbitration Rules of the 2007 Dubai International Arbitration Centre (the “DIAC Arbitration Rules”), the 2008 Arbitration Rules of the Dubai International Financial Centre-London Court of International Arbitration (the “DIFC-LCIA Arbitration Rules”), the 1993 Arbitration Regulations of the Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration Centre (the “ADDCAC Rules”), the 2006 Arbitration Rules of the Qatar International Centre for Commercial Arbitration (the “QICCA Arbitration Rules”), the 1994 Arbitration Rules of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Commercial Arbitration Centre (the “GCC Arbitration Rules”) and the 2009 Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association/Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (the “AAA/BCDR Arbitration Rules”). Due to their increasing prominence for ad hoc arbitration in the region, the 2005 Arbitration Rules of the Qatar Financial Centre (the “QFC Arbitration Rules”) and the 1976 Arbitration Rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) (the “UNCITRAL Rules”) including recent 2010 revisions are included. Full sets of these rules are appended to the comparative chart that makes up the core of this publication. There is also a comparative table on costs and fees to give the reader a clear idea of filing, administrative and arbitrators’ costs under the various arbitration rules. The comparative entries in the chart on parallel provisions of the various sets of arbitration rules follows a logical self-explanatory sequence, mapping the course of an arbitration from the commencement of the proceedings to the issuance of the final award. The first two headline entries on the “arbitration clause” and the “arbitral institution” are meant to provide relevant framework information and to assist the client in swiftly identifying the standard wording of an arbitration clause under the relevant rules (to avoid any debilitating pathologies in the famous midnight drafting process of commercial contracts) as well as the main services and functions provided by the arbitration institution concerned. The arrangement of the information and data provided in the various entries is meant to facilitate consultation of the rules on particular comparative aspects, which we hope is further assisted by the detailed table of contents contained at the very beginning of the volume.
