Book excerpt: Disparities between African American males and other subgroups in American society are one of the most significant social justice issues of our time. They include incongruences between the stated aspirations of African American males and their actual educational and career attainments. Three main domains influence these aspirations: social constructs of family and community; psychological and emotional internalization processes; and institutional and structural frameworks. This three-domain model is viewed through the lens of critical race theory, which contends that race informs all aspects of life and peoples' conceptualization of their world. This dissertation applies the three-domain model and critical race theory to the following research questions: What institutional, psychological and sociological factors impede and promote the ability of young African American males to achieve their academic and career aspirations? What do their stories tell us about what militates against or contributes to their successful pursuit of educational goals and career aspirations? To investigate these questions, I performed a multi-state qualitative research study of young African American males in the Midwestern and Southern United States. Using structured interviews, I conducted focus group and one-on-one interviews with 85 African American males aged 14-20 years old. My results showed that these young men's environment and social connections fundamentally shaped their beliefs about career and academic opportunities. Those exposed to positive views about themselves and their potential held more optimistic beliefs about who they would become. Those who reported being devalued or not receiving positive reinforcement limited their choices and perspectives about their futures. These findings indicate that it is critical to provide young African American males with ongoing, visible affirmation of traditional and non-traditional academic and career interests. Extended day opportunities are also essential to avert them from the streets and other counterproductive behaviors and influences. Furthermore, it is imperative that researchers continue seeking firsthand accounts of the issues these young men face, which will evolve and change alongside society. My experience suggests that researchers need much better access to schools to engage with these young men and help identify and reverse the negative patterns and trends they face.

The study involved 17 African-American male students at a historically black college in Miami, Florida. These students had great desire to achieve and did so despite daunting obstacles such as neighborhoods plagued with drugs, gangs, and crime. Interviewing students at the moment in their lives when they had successfully advanced beyond their environment, the author helps them to analyze their past in an honest manner. The case studies of the individuals reveal that family is the most relevant factor in the student's success; particularly, the presence of one person who cares and encourages the young man is vital. In President Clinton's speech to the NAACP in July 1997, he remarked, I am tired of being told that children cannot succeed because of the difficulties of their circumstances. All we do is consign them to staying in the same circumstances. It is wrong. Through the stories of these students who have overcome their odds, this book can serve as an inspiration for younger African-American males to prevail over their own hardships.

This study employed a strength-based approach, instead of the more traditional narrative centered around values, cultural norms, and deficits. This research study utilized a single-case study design and a qualitative research methodology. The study examined the college choice influences experienced by five African American males attending a mid-sized college in the Midwest to develop a more nuanced understanding of the strengths they exhibited that allow them to successfully navigate impoverished conditions at home, in the neighborhood, and in the school. Data collected from one-on-one in-depth interviews, a brief survey, along with each participant’s high school and college academic transcripts were analyzed to highlight emerging themes associated with the research questions. In-depth interviews served as the primary source of data collection, and six questions guided the study including the following: (a) How do first-generation college students who are African American males develop and nurture their aspiration to enroll in college? (b) In what ways, do family members influence the college choice decision-making process of African American males who are first-generation college students? (c) How do peers influence the college choice decision-making process of African American males who are first-generation college students? (d) How do African American males who are first-generation experience the college search stage? (e) What factors influence the college enrollment decision of African American males? (f) How do African American males make meaning of their experience with the college choice decision-making process?
