Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors other than playing a college sport that affect the academic success of intercollegiate football players; and more broadly to explore the college experience of student-athletes. Data were interpreted using Bourdieu's concept of social capital, and Cooley's and Goffman's theories of self and identity. Graduation rates were examined to validate the academic progress of student-athletes and compare their academic progress with regular students. 36 in-depth interviews with intercollegiate football players were analyzed using a modified grounded theory method. Findings of this case study indicate that intercollegiate football players are positively affected by their college experience outside of playing football. Academic involvement, academic engagement and social networking were key factors related to academic success. In particular, peer social networks were instrumental in the academic success of college players. Studentathletes are successfully utilizing academic and athletic networks to gain access to valuable resources.

Book excerpt: This qualitative exploratory case study is focused on two small cohorts of African American male football-student athletes at the College of San Mateo participating in the Writing In The End Zone learning community. The participants who were students in remedial English and divided into academically "On-Track" and "Off-Track" cohort groups, were asked to identify what they believed were the facilitators and/or impediments to their academic success. The constant comparison methodology was utilized to determine similarities and dissimilarities in the perceptions of these two cohort groups. This research was critical because African American male community college student-athletes make up a large portion of the very vulnerable African American male community college population. African American male community college students in general have been consistently identified as having the lowest matriculation and graduation rates in the country. This study discovered that regardless of the cohorts' status academically, all of the participants identified themselves as football players first and students second. They all agreed that football was the reason they were even enrolled in college and both cohorts chose the same impediments and facilitators. They identified the impediments to their academic success as economic distress, poor academic preparation, difficulty balancing academics, football and other personal and family responsibilities, the perception of football as the way out of poverty, and consciousness of the negative stereotypes of African American males. The facilitators were identified as a strong dependency on support of coaches, teammates and teachers and family (mothers in particular), basic economic support, determination to succeed against all odds, and perceptions of football as the way out. This research was designed to tap into a previously unexplored area in community college research that revealed the rarely heard voice and perspectives of the African American male community college football-student athlete. This qualitative exploratory research serves as the foundation for the much needed future research on the African American community college student-athlete in general and African American male football-student athletes in particular.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore how Black Football players who matriculated at a predominantly white division IAA football institution in the Midwest experienced academic life on campus. I specifically examined the perceptions of Black male football player in areas related to (1) academic aspirations, (2) relationships with support personnel, (3) relationship between athletic participation and academic performance, (4) campus environment, and (5) perceptions of how the athlete's background affects their collegiate academic experiences. Qualitative data collection included interviews with 16 football players who were scholarship recipients and were at least in their third semester of attendance at this university. The rationale behind this choice was that students who have matriculated through the university for at least two semesters were acclimated to the university and had significant experiences with regards to the expectations of college student-athletes. Second, scholarship recipients have the added pressure of maintaining a high level of performance on and off the field in order for their scholarship to be renewed. Whereas the majority of studies of Black athletes have focused on their struggles and underachievement, this study examined the supporting factors that resulted in the successful matriculation of Black football players and their experiences in relation to three categories: campus and academic climate, understandings of academic success, and factors influencing academic performance. This study presented information regarding the challenges that Black male football players face on a predominantly white campus as well as the support structures needed for them to be successful. By exploring the perceptions of the campus environment through the eyes of the athlete, this study may help colleges and universities to better serve their student-athletes.

The reality is that very few college football players are chosen to play professionally -- actually less than .2%. This report explores some of the psychosocial issues that can impact the on and off the field success of African American college football players at predominantly White institutions. The goal of this work is to lay a foundation and make an argument for counseling and therapeutic support targeted to, but not exclusively for African American college football players. As systems that seek to understand growth and change for optimum mental and physical well-being, the field of counseling and sports psychology present intervention models that can be useful for today's African American college football players.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The recruiting process in collegiate football calls for coaches to identify prospective student-athletes who would be most successful at their institution. Humara (2005) argues that while coaches are experts in the identification of physical attributes needed for success, they may lack the ability to identify psychological skills. Niednagel (2004) would contend that in addition to psychological and physical factors, environmental factors also contribute to the ability to succeed. Participants were 108 male football players (35 linemen, 47 tight ends/linebackers, 18 skilled players, 8 special teams) from 6 teams in a NCAA Division I Southeastern conference. Using multivariate analysis of variance and discriminant analysis, the current research attempted to determine factors from demographic information, the Ten-Item Personality Inventory, and the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28, that most accurately predicts starting status in collegiate football players. Results showed that there was a significant difference between starters and non-starters for age, high school size, and coping with adversity, predicting starting status 79.6% of the time.

Book excerpt: Universities are required by the NCAA to ensure student-athletes make progress towards earning a degree. In 2004, The NCAA created the Academic Progress Rate (APR) metric to assess if universities were facilitating academic success for student-athletes. Athletic programs that fail to meet an APR score of 925 receive a variety of penalties. These penalties not only hurt the athletic program but also tarnish an institution's image. Predicting which student-athletes are at-risk can provide an opportunity for athletic programs to change procedures to reduce risk. Although the NCAA provides information about APR risk, results are calculated based on aggregated data across a variety of institutions ranging from regional colleges to elite private universities. The risk factors provided by the NCAA may not accurately reflect risk within a specific institution. The present study assessed risk factors related to losing APR points for student-athletes attending a Division I institution in a BCS conference. Archival data were collected from the institution and the NCAA for 829 student-athletes receiving athletic scholarships between 2003-2009 school years. Predictor variables included high school GPA, SAT scores, conditions of admission, SES, race/ethnicity, sex, playing time, red shirting, distance from home, and sport risk. Results of the analysis indicate that male and female student-athletes have different risk factors and should be analyzed separately. There is an interesting relationship between high school GPA and SAT scores for minority student-athletes. Finally, a combination of preadmission, social-contextual, and sport variables were associated with student-athletes at-risk for losing APR points.
